IMO - Pay to play only works when you have a large consistent supply of rich friends. i dont understand how clubs like this can expect you to sell tickets for saayy...$20? or so and then do this every weekend (sometimes twice) without completely bleeding their fanbase dry of funds. Also the other problem is that you have to collect all the money before hand from people for the tickets which turns to a complete fucking fiasco that only results in everyone getting pissed of. Personally, my main concern when playing shows is not getting 100-1000 people in the door but rather putting on a memorable and fun show for the people who do come to check it out.
