The first recorded use of "heavy metal" to describe a band's sound was in a Rolling Stone review of a Humble Pie album in 1971. They coined the term, they get to decide who fits. According the Rolling Stone 1976 yearbook, Kiss and Alice Cooper (and Aersmith, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, and others I forget) are all fucking metal bands. People can think what they want but that doesn't make them correct.
