The "christmas" tree was adopted from pagan tradition, where people in northern Europe would take a pine tree into his home because it symbolized one of the few plants that grew in the winter. Gifts where given to friends (usually wooden dolls..?) and holly and other shiny objects were put on the tree as an honoring of a hopeful spring. Later, Odins Spear (Gungnir) was placed on the top. No, i didnt read the link, i did browse through some of it though.
