The state decides what licenses clubs get

toggletoggle post by SUBJUGATE   at Aug 3,2004 11:16am edited Aug 3,2004 11:17am

what makes them choose to make it 18+, 19+, or 21+?

when I worked at ManRay it was 19+ because they felt that 19 year old kids would be less likely to dick around with trying to drink than 18 year old kids because they'd had a year to adjust to adulthood. True story. Their license said 18+ though, cause at the time smoking was allowed in Cambridge clubs and it had something to do with that.

Now that everything is no-smoking around boston and cambridge, what is it that makes these licenses what they are?

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Aug 3,2004 11:17am
I just e-mailed about getting porphyria on this.

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Aug 3,2004 11:17am
thanks jim...

is anyone going to sell 25 tickets to be on that palladium show?

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Aug 3,2004 11:18am
Size, location, what the club applies for. Most clubs make money off the bar, so they don't give a shit about trying to be 18+ or all ages and probably don't even bother going for those licenses.

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Aug 3,2004 11:21am
yeah I hear that big time. I heard All Ages is a pretty low-financial-return endeavor.

And yeah I DEFINITELY heat that about the bar cause i remember all the stuff that ManRay would go through to make the bar the focal point and draw out the bucks...cause there's not a lot to be made with covers. You take in you $10 and that's it per person, no second $10 once the place is packed. So you either deal with making the door and give up or you sell drinks and continue to make money until you close at 2AM.

but that said, couldn't clubs start to find a new way to make money till the end? I mean, besides selling just alcohol? Like juice, or...I dunnow something that people by in large amounts, over time, and very much when under diress?

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Aug 3,2004 11:22am
I think most people would rather drink beer and alcohol when out then juice.

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Aug 3,2004 11:24am
man alcohol is some popular shit.

big time.

if I were as popular as alcohol, man, I'd be like King of the World.

oh well.

i didn't mean to distract from the original topic here, so thanks for posting this, It's great when people fill you in on opportunities. I mean let's face it, 90% of this board is in bands (or some number that's high) and we're all hungry to play out.

Just thinking of ideas out loud...

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Aug 3,2004 11:46am
I'd rather remember every moment of the show, therefore I'll take an apple juice over a brewsky anyday. Beer is the trendy thing to drink.

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Aug 3,2004 11:48am
I don't drink, but I think people just like to kick back and drinking helps them just have more fun after a week of gay work

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Aug 3,2004 11:54am
we need to find something trendy, then, that people will consume in mass quantities while trying to kick back.

that allows for there to be 18 and under people around when it happens.

I'd really like to play but it's the 18+ thing keeping me from sending an email :\

Bah...It's compounded by the fact that my acoustic project is playing a free all-ages show earlier that day, so then I would go to this show but selectively eleminate a lot of that crowd I could invite to Club Liquid...

Side note - I think I played there once...don't they have stripper cages next to the upstairs stage?
