Richmond, VA's preeminent black metal band and one of USBM's best-kept secrets, BASTARD SAPLING, has just debuted a new song via media behemoth NPR. "Lantern At the End of Time" is taken from their upcoming new album and features the vocal prowess of longtime friend Dorthia Cottrell of WINDHAND renown. BASTARD SAPLING is gearing up to release Instinct is Forever, a career-defining double album, on August 26th via longtime conspirators Forcefield Records and new allies Gilead Media.

"Lantern At the End of Time" is the first new song to be shared with the public, and as NPR notes, "The first 45 seconds ought to sound familiar to anyone on an Immortal kick: The hooky black-metal riff has just enough melody to make you raise a fist in pumping triumph. This was Bastard Sapling's M.O. on the debut, though executed with more craft than you'll often hear from the second wave of black metal. But then Cottrell shows up, cooing as if she's leading a coven in a horror B-movie, making that ravagingly heavy opening feel... weightless."

BASTARD SAPLING also recently announced a July tour with brother band INTER ARMA with their sights set on Oshkosh, WI's semi-annual Gilead Fest. They'll be looping down through the South and up towards the Midwest on their path to Gilead, where they'll share the stage with a dizzying array of underground talent like Thou, The Body, Ash Borer, Wolvserpent, Barghest, Uzala, Seidr, Alraune, Loss, Mutilation Rites, and more.

After forming in 2007 and ensuing years of touring, festival appearances, and obscure limited releases (like a now infamous 2008 rehearsal demo and 2010′s ‘V: A Sepulchur to Swallow the Sea‘ 7″, which Brooklyn Vegan hailed as “blastingly powerful”), Richmond, VA’s BASTARD SAPLING turned loose their debut full-length. Entitled ‘Dragged From Our Restless Trance,' the album saw an October 23, 2012 release via Forcefield Records and offered four songs and forty minutes’ worth of cold, atmospheric, adventurous black metal. Now, in 2014, their greatest work yet has been achieved with the ambitious double album 'Instinct is Survival.' BASTARD SAPLING straddle the divide between the best moments of Immortal, Bathory, and vintage Ulver, taking cues from old-school Darkthrone, recalling the majestic atmosphere of Drudkh and augmenting the entire apparition with an appealingly raw but listenable production and a DIY-or-die ethos.

If only my writing was as fluffy as that press release, my wrestling career might have taken off.

I imagine this band would have that dulcimer guy guest on a track.
