They all look like homeless people....or they just dress that way. They look filthy.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Feb 4,2014 10:03am
It's easy to tell the difference between a crusty, and someone who is following an "underground trend".
If they look homeless but smell showered, they're posing.
If they look and smell homeless, they're crusties.

I remember some crust kid who was bumming smokes off of everyone and snuck cans of Pabst into the Middle East at the first (possibly only?) Doom and Grind fest. He smelled like he hadn't showered in a month.

They aren't pleasant to be around, but they have good taste in music.

toggletoggle post by true_quintessence at Feb 5,2014 4:21am
They're taste ranges from Ok to cliche left wing anarchist grind shit. Ive been close to homeless in my life and I still found places to fucking bathe. These people are spoiled losers.

toggletoggle post by true_quintessence at Feb 5,2014 4:22am
And they for sure do not deserve to have animals. Its borderline abuse. Look at that dog doesn't even want to walk with its idiotic shit cretin of an owner. Probably hasn't had any food in a week other than half empty PBR's and left over rolling tobacco.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Feb 5,2014 10:55am
I just can't figure out who I would shoot first.

The dog, to put the poor fucker out of its misery?

The shithead owners, to do the world a great favor?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 5,2014 11:19am
my favorite is the dude in that grindcore crust band skeleton witch tshirt.

How about the crusty and his friends I saw beat his dog, or the shitbag with a cat on a leash that he dangles around by its neck? Cool taste in music, filthy fuck.

Well, if you don't like grind, I guess you would say that.
I love grind.
I've never met a crustie I couldn't talk to about crust, grind, powerviolence and/or fast hardcore.
You just (usually) have to talk to them from a distance or wearing a clothespin on your nose

they are usually too drunk and trying to get into a concert free for me to understand them.

^^^ hah. Usually true.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Feb 6,2014 1:40pm
punk is something I've never understood. is it called "crust punk" because they are crusty people, or because it's the outer fringe of punk? HELP ME.

toggletoggle post by shitcunt at Feb 6,2014 1:47pm
Yeti,
I honestly think the term "Crust Punk" came from people describing the types of people who are most into that music. But it could also be that the sound/type of distortion used in most crust (and grind for that matter) bands brings that word to mind.

As far as the sound, imagine angry/hardcore punk meets grindcore with thrashy guitar riffs and no blastbeats.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Feb 6,2014 2:37pm
I worked with a guy who was obsessed with all of the things you mentioned but he was a family man so didn't fit the "crusty" label. I don't know what it would be considered but the only time he ever showed me something I liked was Agnostic Front - Cause For Alarm. Otherwise I just couldn't get into it.

toggletoggle post by Czarnobog at Feb 6,2014 3:23pm edited Feb 6,2014 3:53pm
nah, "crust" just means dirty. post-uk anarcho punk, when the squatter punx started getting bored of straightforward three chord shit and into black sabbath and proto-death metal and smelled like garbage... bands like amebix, extreme noise terror, filthkick, deviated instinct, later antisect etc. these days the stinky lifers call it "stenchcore" and make their moms proud.

no idea what the nowadays ethos is, but the whole stinky/homeless thing used to be a way to distinguish yourself from the surface level punks who were just music fans... taking the whole "fuck society" thing to its outsider extreme, walking the 'no future' talk etc etc. pretty sure people just buy their shit-stained punk pants on ebay now though, so yeah...

oh ok, so "crust" was literal. If only things could be that simple now, where layers of filth define what music you listen to. Though I guess it still does, filth has just been replaced by scarves. the more I know indeed.

Agnostic Front is hardcore. They started off hardcore punk, and then - over the years - sort of drifted into that new "wiggery" floorpuncher hardcore stuff.

The wikipedia article on crust is a fairly interesting (and accurate) read.

interesting. I always knew that black metal and punk walked hand-in-hand in ways, I just never cared for the latter. Even the new Darkthrone, while well written and enjoyable, doesn't do it for me.

There is a lot of really good "blackened crust" out there that is much better than what Darkthrone was doing. Also, I took a look at the wikipedia link and it is pretty much on the mark.

I mock crusties a lot (hence the thread) but I actually like crust punk music. Maybe this weekend I'll put up a crust thread of the good stuff....

Anyway, the crust look is really cool in stage photos and on the back of 7" records, but the infusion of drug addled soap abhorring transients does dominate peoples opinions. A lot of the "crusties" I have come across aren't really deeply into the music. Think of the circles of crusties at the Maryland Death fest that just slept in the parking lot and never went into the show. There are homeless heroin addicts that found a look and subculture they could drift around and blend into. (I mean, how are you going keep your Nausea - cybergod 7" and Misery - "Children of War" EP from breaking when your running from Bulls in the trainyard)

There is this awesome site dedicated to photos and interviews with crusties in new york city. It was fucking beautiful. But in it you can see how many of them were leaches and just trouble making drug addicts. I'm going to search for it and post a link.

nu crust sucks. demondave start a thread bout the good shit and ill post some goodies. the way i dress would be considered "crust" but im far from some commie train hopping anarchists. some of em can be cool people but for the most part there just trouble making drug addicts as dave said. if i didnt hafta go to work in ten mins id post up some shit but ill get to that when i get home.

There's traveling hobo assholes and then there's crusties. They are not the same thing, despite common misconceptions.

As far as the musical genre... never been too big on it personally.

At MDF people always tell me that I"m the first crustie they've ever met that is cool. They are also surprised I can afford to get in and always ask if it is my first deathfest. :\\

toggletoggle post by punk potenza at Feb 8,2014 8:34am
yea it sucks being pigeon holed i fuckin hate most crusties but like i said i met so nice ones. its also awsome to buy there recoreds and tapes off them cause they need it for heroin money

I was busy all weekend and didn't get to make a separate thread about crust.

Here is an awesome blog about crusties in New York. Some of them are deliberately living off the grid. Some are addicts. Some a just plain wacked. Many stories will make you roll your eyes and lol. enjoy
