Jarrod’s Underground/ Formerly – Jarrod’s Live Rock Venue

This letter is being sent to you because you are one of 50+ bands that were selected to perform at Jarrod’s in the next few months. Jarrod’s booking policy is now going to change once again. Bands that have had an average of (25) or more paid, have promoted their shows with the venue to the fullest and that are actually talented will be booked and put in a regular rotation. Bands in this category will also be asked to e-mail Jarrod Ilkowitz back or call him at your earliest conveinance to discuss a future date and update your band information as soon as possible. This will be highly appreciated. The local scene is dying and Jarrod’s is in the process of trying to change that by booking bands of the same genre and bands that have a great reputation for promoting their shows and selling tickets to help build great showcases. Jarrod’s is only booking live original bands on Fridays nights now and the set times will be available for 6 bands on this night starting August 13th,2004. Jarrod’s is going to be having a grand opening on July 24th w/ TNT productions/ DJ Cruz. Hip Hop/ R&B will be another type of music that Jarrod’s will now offer and specialize in. The new line-up for the week will be:

Thursdays- TNT and DJ Cruz ( Hip Hop, R&B dance party) 18+ $10 Doors at 8:00pm

Fridays- Local Music (selected by Jarrod only, only bands that have had a good reputation for promoting will be booked through the year)

Saturdays- TNT and DJ Cruz (Hip Hop, R&B dance party) 21+ $10 Doors at 8:00pm Ladies $5 before 10:00pm

Sundays- 3:00pm-7:00pm (all ages shows, all types of music) 8:00pm-12:00am

All ages Dance party w/ DJ Cruz (techno, house, hip hop,R&B,Rap,Top 40)

Sundays will be non smoking and non alcohol shows. Rules will be added soon.

If your band is listed on this letterhead please contact me ASAP to book august through winter dates. Jarrod’s will be booking a full 6 month schedule and will not have any open dates for at least 6-8 months so, act now. I will guarantee you that you will be booked with bands of the same genre and bands that will promote and draw well. The days of playing with bands you might not fit in with or bands that have no draw power are over. We have formed a list of bands that are capable of pulling 50+ people every time and we are happy that we could gather this information by polling a survey every weekend for the past year. The tickets policy and payment scale may also change a bit. To benefit bands and the venue. Please call me ASAP.

Thank you,

What exactly is so bad about Jarrod's? I've never been there but my friends band from up here has played there a couple times and they haven't said anything bad about the place.

Just curious.

Actually most venues are doing this they just aren't so fucking open about it. I mean, I remember days when I'd go to a show at the paladium and would see a local act for the first time and would be happy. Now the venues need a draw so they book the same bands over and over and 90% of the time less people go each time because they keep seeing the same bands, so the venue books new bands, but no one shows up for these because they are unable to get show because they don't have a draw. did that make sense? I know what i meant to say, but I'm not sure if everyone will understand. all in all... that really sucks is my main point.

toggletoggle post by Siberian at Jul 2,2004 2:43pm
I know of lot's of clubs that will ban you if you slander them. There's a couple of them right up here in little ol' Burlington, VT. It's pretty much a common theme, you talk shit about a venue, why would they book you knowing how you feel about them and what you're telling people. Makes sense to me. A lot of bands take being in a band and playing shows for granted. Other's highly value the experience and try to get as much as they can out of it. I guess this looks like Jarrod's way of weeding out some of these bands. I don't know for sure, I really know nothing about Jarrod's and am still wondering why it's looked upon the way it is. He's been really cool to me over the past few weeks and we're considering playing there but I want to know why you all hate the place so much.

Jarrods is a joke. Always has been. Always will be. If the "local scene" is "dying" then jarrods has been continually active in killing it over the last several years; booking awful shows, never promoting anything, hiring a bouncer staff that pulls stun guns on people, hits kids with flashlights, beats people for no reason, and fights people instead of breaking up fights. Has this Jarrod clown ever wondered why the Palladium is able to get such good shows with such consistantly good attendence with much much less problems? Does Jarrod wonder how Death Before Dishonor can play shows on a regular basis all around the country, yet the one time they came to Jarrods the entire Jarrods bouncer staff got beat the fuck up? The fact of the matter is that, MUCH LIKE THE TANK aka The H20 aka the Atlantic Lounge, its probably just a front for drug deals, and the actual shows mean nothing.

I'm sure someone from the Jarrods staff will read this sooner or later. So just in case....Hey Jarrod. Fuck you.

thats not really true and when club owners are banning bands for no reason and accusing them of things they did'nt do you have to take a stand and defend youself and your band. it's time the bands took back the scene and not let it get ruined by club owners who don't care about the bands or the scene

the metal scene in new england is doing pretty good in my opinion and part of the reason why is cause people like

you should stop look and listen to the other bands in the area and you'd realize that theres is a great local metal scene around here

here's my experience with that wretched shit hole in the earth we call jarrod's place:

first off, my old band was booked there with some good bands since a fellow metalhead was allowed to select the bill...then whoever was doing the booking "forgot" about the show, so we were given another date. my band and i, as well as 10 of our friends flyered for the show all over the place, spread the word, even sold a few tickets, and the day before the show it was CANCELLED due to people not wanting to work on father's day. so we got another date, but half the bands originally booked were replaced by shitty radio rock wannabes with no crowd at all.

to top it all off, at the show there were frayed and bare wires all over the place, the sound guy kept fucking with shit while playing, and when we told him to turn down the goddamn bass monitors he just turned them all up more and shut off the mic to my amp. fucking dumbasses. i'd like to play there again for the sole purpose of lighting it on fire.

I can think of a half dozen other stories about that place almost exactly like this. Jarrod doesn't know what he's doing. It just makes this whole thing funnier to think that physically it's one of the better clubs in the state (maybe disregarding location).

My band wasn't able to sell 1 ticket for that place because no one knew where the hell it was. We played the show and sure enough, no one was there. Not even for the other band. I got bitched out for 45 minutes by him and had to listen to him praise the other band for selling 40 tickets. YET NO ONE WAS THERE FOR EITHER BANDS. The club was empty the whole night, not one person. This is what happens when Mommy and Daddy buy 40 tickets.

But hey, as long as Surge sees you made your quota, he's happy.

"The days of playing with bands you might not fit in with or bands that have no draw power are over."

How about making it so there's no more entry once the show starts and no re-entry.

I'm sure many of you will piss and moan at this but the fact is no one shows up untill their friend's band starts and they leave when they are done.

This is how clubs are run in Florida and shows there are always packed. Unlike new england, people there have no choice but to be there early and stay late.

I don't know about the rest of you but I just love seeing an empty room when I get to a show. Then see a shitload of people show up for one band only for them to leave when it comes time for the last bands.

Hey guys,

We've played at the BOMBSHELTER 4 times in the past year... The BELLADONNA show we did a few months ago had 250 people... Not bad. The EXCITER show we did a yaer ago had 200 people... Not bad. The headlining show we did a year ago last April had 220 people... Not bad. The only show that did shitty (because of a snowstorm last December) was MELIAH RAGE.

This CANNIBAL CORPSE show ought to be packed!!

Other shows that were packed or sold out at the BOMBSHELTER : CLUTCH, LIFE OF AGONY, REVEREND HORTON HEAT, HATEBREED and MADBALL.

JARROD's : I don't care what some people say on this board... We've alway's been treated very well there... And, made money!! 'Cause, we did our work!! D.R.I. is looking pretty good at the end of July....

i think clubs relying only on the bands to do the promotion for the shows is gay but that in no way means the bands should just sit on their hands either

the reason why palldium shows do so well is cause they take out ad's in the phenoix and have em placed where they will be seen not hidden in the back where no one looks the size of 2 business cards

i think the bombshelter could do well if it took out ad's in the boston pheonix.

toggletoggle post by Joe/NotCommon   at Jul 5,2004 10:46am
i dont think the bomb shelter advertising in the phoenix would do much, unlike the Palladium, they aren't always booked with bigger tours.
I think if a club has smaller underground and local shows booked, they should definately expect the promoter and bands to do most or all of the promotion.

So keep blaming Jarrod's and the Bombshelter because YOU suck. That makes lots of sense. All I read here are a bunch of bitter cry babys whose bands suck.
Get one thing straight - the scene in New England is DEAD and has been DEAD for longer than most of you have even been playing in your pathetic excuses for metal bands. I'm 36 and have been going to underground shows since 1983, the scene of the past decade has been a fucking joke. People arent going to come to your local shows because you suck. Get it?
Try working really hard, creating quality speed and death metal and not carbon copy crap. Dont get me wrong there are a handful of decent local metal bands. I dont want to single any bands out one way or another though.
Someone mentioned how people show up late or come early and then leave. He's right. Ive been to headlining shows where all the local bands pack up and go home to mommy and daddy before the national headliner even hits the stage. What kind of support is that?
Billy Milano made some funny comments about this at The Living Room a few months ago.
Bottom line is stop pointing fingers and blaming others for YOUR failures.
To those of you who do really work hard and play intense metal, keep it up and dont let anyone bring you down.

No, see I haven't had the problem with Jarrod, you have. I tried helping you stay on the Meliah Rage bill. It was taking out of my hands when you went off on him on boards like this and the AAF site. Questioning a person's friendship in an e-mail is one thing questioning it on a board is another. That takes it too far and makes it personal. The reason I haven't gone to see you play in a long time, is because I have two jobs, I manage a band, and I help out some local bands in my area. But now I have a better reason why NOT to go.
To those of you who do really work hard and play intense metal, keep it up and dont let anyone bring you down.

then you haven't gone to a local show in awhile because the majortiy of the bands that are playing now are fucking awsome, and these bands can't play at jarrods place or won't because they know how shitty the club is, the scene has been dying but is making a comeback and if you still knew anything about it you would shut the fuck up you cum eating douchbag

1st of all there are two perspectives here: 'audience member' and 'musician'. 'audience members' are all concerned with re-entry, smoking, bouncers, etc... and the 'musicians' are concerned with busting their asses to help build a scene and getting RIPPED OFF in the process.

a band i played with played at Jarrod's in 2003. we were co-headlinging with a band from Ct, and we had been 'guaranteed' (Jarrod's word) a certain amount of $ for the gig. The Ct band cancelled that day and the club called us to tell us we were now headlining. OK, cool, we thought. So we drive there, do the gig, and get paid $0.00.... Jarrod tells us that that gig was a package deal, and that when the 2nd band cancelled, the 'guarantee' was off. DID HE TELL US THAT WHEN HE CALLED TO TELL US WE WERE HEADLINING? NO. HE TOLD US AFTER WE BROUGHT ALL OUR FRIENDS TO HIS CLUB TO BUY TIX AND BUY BEER, PLAYED THE SHOW AND MADE HIM MONEY.
THAT, my friends, is a fucking RIP OFF. and now this guy tries to come off like a hero trying to save our dying scene... when in reality he's trying to line up suckers that he can rip off for the next six months so that he can save his dying club.

First off junior, I dont really give 2 fucks about Jarrods. I go wherever there are QUALITY metal bands and I dont see too many. Almost every show I attend has several local bands who sound like "jump da fuck up" nu metal or boring carbon copy death metal shit. Im not into that.
As far as the "club scene" goes, I know more than you will ever. Ive been living it for over 20 years. I saw Metallica open for Raven at the Rathskellar in Boston on July 31st 1983 (I bet 3rd Knuckle was there)
so dont tell me I dont know anything about the pathetic current state of the local scene. Ive been a part of it since you were still probably shitting your diapers.

Too be honest, I dont go many local shows anymore. Mainly because I live in Providence and well now that The Met Cafe is gone, there arent many good shows to see. I also dont have time time. I was talking about going to see national bands like Exodus, DRI, Overkill, etc and having to sit through shitty local openers.
Anyone hear hear of Stryknine? They opened for Exodus on Long Island a few weeks ago and they were awful. Even the guys in Exodus were puzzled as to why 2 shitty bands were on the bill. (cant recall the other one)
honor4death, thanks for the list. Ive seen several of the bands you listed.
bane of existence: decent enough music but the vocals are so typical carbon copy booooring, disengaged: didnt care for these guys. misery index - awful! csdo: have seen these guys many times over the years, good solid old school thrash. raov: Random Actos of Violence?! Now THIS band is awesome! Very unique. Thanks again for the list, I'll keep my eyes open for some of these bands, but again unless they are close by like The Living Room or something, I doubt Ill be seeing any of them unless they get on the national gigs, then I dont mind traveling hours to see a show.
Rusted Angel, Joe/Notcommon, DugOXistance, Intricate Process, 3rd Knuckle (guess I gave you more credit than I should have)
Anyway,
I was just trying to prove the point that I know all about the "scene" because Ive lived it forever. I guess its ok to take Bob Mayo's word but not a regular fan, thats cool, whatever. No need to get all pissy, but my point is that the scene is nowhere near what it once was. I see it as DEADER than DEAD.

hehe

those shitty openers are cause of the person booking the show, theres plenty of bands that'll fit with the headliners but the people booking don't even know what 1/2 the headliners sound like all they know is they will make em $ and that all they care about 90% of the time (and i know this is how jarrod does it) they book bands who drew well on a shitty nite they could care less if they fit or not (did you see mastamindz open for prong i think that speaks for it's self) i have heard Stryknine yes they are as bad as their name

i disagree about what you said about my band BOE and misery index owns, you must just not really like death metal that is brutal

i have lived the scene too man i think when you go off on the scene you should realize that we in the metal community have no controle who gets to be put on shows theres plenty of great metal bands around just some promoters arn't hearing $$ when they are booking shows and bands that would and should be getting on the shows are over looked for what ever flavor of the week is happening hence the shitty local openers you keep seeing on big shows

you call yourself a fan yet the only shows you will go out of your way to see are majors with shitty openers you need to hit some of the web sites of the bands here and check out whats around in the "real metal" scene

you may think the scene is deader than dead but hey it's not the late 80's and early 90's anymore it's harder for original bands to get shows but i will say it has got a lot better in the last 3 years than say mid 90's and after the rat closed no one was really booking metal it was all nirvana pearl jam and aic rip off crap things have gotten much better trust me on this

Seriously though the scene isnt what it was but its better than its been in a long time.
Joe NotCommons shows have been gaining steam and there is a notable difference. Same thing goes for the Boston's Dead shows. Sin Promo's as well.
Also this is a town were street punk and indi rock rule the bigger clubs and metal is still gaining momentum. If you look in Performer Mag this month you wont see one metal band mentioned in it. Go look at the classified's and they are all people looking to start metal bands.
Interest is growing and the quality of bands around town is getting better all the time.

I keep seeing you guys talk about mastamindz also...? Strange that you would be upset with a band that brings in an awful lot of people, you guys upset cause you keep saying the local scene is dead but when you see a "nu-metal" band that brings in a crowd you decide to bash the band. Give it up on the bashing part and just realize that YOU GUYS are the ones who suck. Jarrod's sucks? How? Because you guys can't bring in a soul and then don't feel like hearing you scream in their club like your getting your ass reamed and your not even bringing in any cash. Go play in front of your friends at your jam space in your moms house you little bitches. theres a difference between bringing in a crowd, and bringing all your friends, the only reason mastamindz has a crowd is becuase they have alot of friends that would go see them play, and i know this because that what alot of bands that draw good at jarrods do, i use to play across from this band market st. and they had parties in their room everynight with all of their "fans" or friends and they would bring them to jarrods everytime they played there... so the "nu-metal" scene is more like what band has the most friends, metal shows only real fans of the music show up, because i know none of my friends would come see any of the bands i like play because they hate metal. and i hate what ever they listen to, so it all works out...

Subjugate,
you are 100% correct about the clubs being at fault for booking the sucky weak openers on National gigs. Its too bad it is that way. If I had cash, Id open up a club and help out all the underground metal bands, even the ones I thought sucked. You seem like a cool guy and one whose pretty dedicated, thats killer.
No, I didnt go to Prong, saw them a couple times ages ago and never really cared for them.
"i disagree about what you said about my band BOE and misery index owns, you must just not really like death metal that is brutal"
Well I would hope you would disagree after all it IS apparently your band LOL, sorry man Yeah, Im much more into speed and thrash and old school hardcore. Ive always liked some death metal, but alot of the vocals sound too similar, no uniqueness thats all. To me thats boring. I think your band is actually pretty good, Ive seen you guys play 2 or 3 times, but the vocals just dont do anything for the band IMO, thats all. Its just contructive criticism and its only my opinion.
"you call yourself a fan yet the only shows you will go out of your way to see are majors with shitty openers you need to hit some of the web sites of the bands here and check out whats around in the "real metal" scene"
You are right again, but like I said man, I dont really have the opportunity to see real local underground metal shows because of where I live. If you think Im going to drive 2 or 3 hours (or even ONE) on a work night to see some local bands Ive never heard then youre out of your tits. LOCAL means within your area. In MY pathetic area The Living Room is about the only place I could go and check out some real underground metal bands. I will however keep my eyes out for the bands you've been so cool to list and if any come here Ill be sure to check em out, that includes your band as well man. I'll go see you play again if your in town.
Ive seen kevorkians angels too, wasnt impressed.

Now, DugOXistance, sorry to burst your little bubble but the "sorry I gave you more credit than I should have" comment was directed at Bob from Wargasm, not you or any of the other shits. Sorry, I should have been more specific.

Well I hear they bring in a few hundred people a show and if they keep going then then must be very good friends if the music sucks so bad. N when did it become a problem to have friends go see you play live anyway...WAIT the reason you guys all don't have anyone at your shows is cause you don't have any friends. I personally do not care for mastamindz but have been to a show where I LUCKILY bought a ticket to see my friends band a they had JARROD's SOLD OUT. The people that they had there seemed to enjoy themselves also. NOt everyone is into hard core metal. I personally like everything from King Diamond to Bob Marley and Mastamindz is definitly not a bad band at all. They know how to play, entertain, and it shows that they work very hard if they have a following. Oh yeah I also like Jarrod's Underground HIP-HOP! IT's where the bitches will be.
