a group of degenerate teenagers from San Francisco conjured a primitive, minimalist, trance-like buzz from their basements.

VON's two recordings, Satanic Blood and Blood Angel, were passed around the world as bootlegs, inspiring the Second Wave Norwegian sound that spawned thousands of bands over the last 25 years.

After breaking up twenty years ago VON is back with their first official album and their first ever East Coast performance.

The Ritual of The Black Mass comes to Saint Vitus on December 11
and there will be blood.

What's the deal with Von these days? Something like two camps claiming to be the true Von?

A week ago I wouldn't care, but I was listening to their live material again (the only recordings with decipherable guitars) over the weekend and it put me in a weird state of mind and I was really digging it. I had it on repay though out the day.

But if this some shitty pseudo-Von, I don't want to consider going.

Von isn't a heavy band like Isis and Job for a Cowboy.

With that flyer, I wonder if people'll think it's Eerie Von playing.

Heard from friend on West Coast that Von Goat was boring live and just about everybody I know that went to the LA Von show said it was two hours of the most boring shit.

Manowar played for nearly three hours when I saw them and I loved every minute of it.

Manowar has a catalog and a history. Von is just a side note in Black Metal.

Yea there are a few exceptions for me as far as long sets go. Such as manowar maiden priest shit like that. But as much as I love von they unfortunatly ain't one of them.

I still dont believe Von played for two hours, random ambient shit or not. I wouldnt watch any band for more than an hour or so. After a while no matter how good they sound you get tired of standing there. Unless it was something like Tangerine Dream where you can sit back and listen.

They started out the set with old material - I am guessing about 5 songs. It was kind of hard to tell exactly which ones they were since their old catalog sounds pretty much the same from song to song… so things blended in a bit. Although they were old songs, the arrangements and tunings were very different from how they originally sounded. 

Without any breaks, they then went into a downward murky spiral of new songs, The riffs were repetitive, but the songs themselves were much longer and slower, or "doom-y" compared to their early releases. I lost track of time, but I am guessing this went on for about 45 to 50 minutes. They finished the set with old material… which again was played like the opening. I do remember "Devil Pig" being played, but that was the only one I really remember. 

There were no breaks or in between song banter. Kind of reminded me more of a band like Portal or Neurosis, in terms of atmosphere. Definitely not spikes and leather, but more rotting blood and filth. 

I had no idea what I was in for since I have been too busy to keep up with any sort of music leaks or previews… and I lost track of all the legal issue BS and member changes. 

It's obvious by the time they finished their set that people were expecting something different, since it seemed that a good chunk of the crowd cleared out. I don't want to say "they just didn't get it", but it seems from reading on here and Facebook that many of the attendees they were expecting them to just go up and and play exact renditions of their old material as they appeared on Satanic Blood (Angel). 

I liked what I heard and I think they put on a good show. It was more performance art rather than just some guys playing songs in a row. My only complaint was that the set was kind of an endurance test to get through and maybe cutting out 15 - 20 minutes would have been a good idea. 

I have a feeling if there was no older VON material and this was just some random new band (which in a way it is), opinions would be a little different.

With VON Goat and VON Venien does the new doom direction make them Viktor VON Doom?

Exactly why all these band reunions are ridiculous. What can you expect though, easier to get gigs and guarantees when you can use an old classic name for yourself and shit on a legacy.
