PILGRIM: Rhode Island Doom Trio Premiere New Song on Brooklyn Vegan
Today BrooklynVegan premieres "Quest," the latest single from Rhode Island doom dooers PILGRIM. "Quest" is the third track off the band's forthcoming debut full-length, Misery Wizard, set for North American release on February 14, 2012.
Commented the band in a collective statement: "'Quest' was one of our first songs. It has a special place in our hearts. It tells the tale of a man's grueling journey through a desert to obtain an ancient relic locked away in a palace for thousands of years."
Check out the tune as well as an interview with the band at THIS LOCATION.

PILGRIM are the latest addition to the Metal Blade roster via Alan Nemtheanga's imprint, Poison Tongue Records. Said Pure Grain Audio in an advance review of the record: "PILGRIM is a massive slab of slow-burning, sludgy doom metal. This is true doom metal, not the hybrid bile that so many bands are passing off as doom these days. The monster riffs will bludgeon you senseless and shake you to the core, but you'll keep coming back from more, willingly and repeatedly." Added Sea Of Tranquility, "slow, ponderous, crushing doom, owing much to vintage Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, and the like. Ominous riffs, pounding rhythms, and haunting vocals make up the formula here, and tracks such as 'Quest,' 'Astaroth,' and 'Masters of the Sky' mix up the slow motion death marches with speedier dirges for a wild ride."
PILGRIM will be ravaging the East Coast this March with their soul-crushing bottom end this March before making their way to Europe in May. Confirmed dates thus far are available below.

"Providence should be nuked. The music scene there is a disgrace. Its clubs are dominated by greedy promoters. Everyone there is trying to make a buck. It is obvious that there is something terribly, terribly wrong there. Even hidden away in the warehouse districts, where there is a "small, secret scene", it's little more than pretentious hipster music.
The scene is dominated by singer/songwriter bubblegum shit and screamo/emo garbage, with a few noise rock bands in between. I have complete respect for the noise bands that were making music in Providence during the late 90's, early 00's, bands like Lightning Bolt and White Mice, but their time has passed and their glorious empire has fallen. Providence is a mere shadow of its former self."
heyoooooo |

I think my buttdart detector just shattered like the depth meter in Das Boot. |

Content to rehash the same shit people have listened to since the '70s, what a horrible band. |

The music isn't terrible, just not terribly original. Reverend Bizarre called and wants their schtick back.
That interview, on the other hand, is completely terrible. Young kids. They'll pay their dues, the hard way, if they make it that far.

Yeah, rare to see good modern doom rooted in real, true metal that is not regurgitated shite.
I've heard a lot of good things about the latest Lord Vicar album, but honestly haven't been arsed to check it out yet. Never blew a nut over Terra Firma like a lot of people, think that's what held me back.

Its funny how all you hipstetrs that listen to anything remotely "doom" sounding in PVD suddenly hate a band cause they call you out on your pretentious bullshit. LOL fuck providence. Last good show was 6 years ago there. |
|
Just for the record I dont think this band is good either, but the IRONY of it brings me the epic lulz |

Exactly what's pretentious about what goes on in Providence? The warehouse shows do get promoted well, people are just told to not post addresses publicly. |
|
CHEERS to PILGRIM. This band crushes. I know like half of them go to school in NYC. Good to see a band speak their mind....how is he not right? |

Good to see a band speak their mind....how is he not right? |
-Nobody knows who this band is and they're bashing shows that they've apparently never been to
-They are holding a scene they were not old enough to be a part of in high regard saying it's "better" than what's going on today (which is pretty much the pinnacle of pretentiousness in itself)
So that's how they're wrong. Apparently this band is from Newport. I'm just gonna blame this whole thing on Dwyer and call it a day. |
|
Also, apparently Pilgrim was actually booked to play a warehouse show not that long ago and canceled three days before because they had gotten signed to Metal Blade and were asked to play a show with more "prestige" in NYC, so it's pretty clear these guys will shit on whoever they have to so they can be "on top". Fuck this band. |
|
This is like that time I was in a derivative doom band.
|
|
This band is hipster doom. They sound nothing like Skepticism. |

I'd say "don't shit where you eat"... but I'm the last one to tell this dude anything about eating, obviously. |

The answer was no. Not because providence sucks, but because of tours. Maybe later if things change. |

The answer was no. Not because Quahog sucks, but because they're going to LA to visit Brian Griffin. Maybe later if Brian finds his life as an adult film screenwriter unfulfilling. |

#1 hit for "pilgrim pizza doom" |

Wtf? I don't think I've ever seen any of those kids out... hooray for not socializing. Also, that is some silly cover art. |
|
^ Guessing their moms got wind of all the ne'er-do-wells hanging around and wouldn't drop them off. |

pretty sure Jon is from N. Kingstown and the drummer is from Warwick, not sure about the bass.

I don't think they're terribly wrong by suggesting that the pvd scene is largely fairly secret and has lots of warehouse shows that are nearly impossible to get on if you don't know the right people.
I don't think they're wrong or pretentious by suggesting that old days are better than the modern times (who doesn't do that? and doesn't saying this era is better than that era the height of pretentiousness YET it's something old fucks have been doing for years).
I havn't had time to read the interview, just curious what everyone is so enraged about. |
|
just read the interview. I find it interesting the amount of fat hate on a vegan site, go figure, good to see those nazis are keeping it real these days, keep living the dream and fighting the good fight! PURE SOLDIERS.
sooo, why are you guys all butt hurt about the interivew?
|
|
lets just talk about lord vicar |
|
|
and doesn't saying this era is better than that era the height of pretentiousness YET it's something old fucks have been doing for years |
I tend to not take the opinions of people seriously who insist the old days were better than what's going on now. Typically the people who have been around a long time I've known won't say anything about which eras were better than what necessarily as much as what's simply different about the time periods and saying what things were better than and what's better now. Anyone who isn't jaded is capable of giving an objective analysis and it's pretty much a fact that all scenes go through their ups and downs. I agree that Providence was in a lull for a while, but to say there's nothing going on now is completely preposterous, especially with how many new bands there have been popping up in the last couple years and are kicking my ass. I feel like the city is starting to get back "there" again and in a way I care more about. The artsy scene is pretty whatever to me and I did have fun seeing those bands live to me, but I'm excited that there's been an influx lately of hardcore (both punk and not so punk, a mixed bag for people to choose from) and black metal and various other odd bands to keep things interesting.
So basically, to make a blanket statement saying the scenes are "pretentious hipster singer/songwriter music" in "super secret tucked away warehouses" (many of these shows get flyered and talked about on the Internet and the only rule is to just not post an address in a public location for very obvious reasons, and people are not pretentious about it at all when you ask them in a private setting, they are more than happy to include anyone in their fun who takes the initiative to seek it out) is pretty fucking stupid and proof to me that these guys are simply not on the ball and not paying attention.
Also, I'm from North Kingstown myself and I don't sound like that. There are plenty of people from suburbia who have positive things to say about the scene and understand the protocol, just show up, have a good time, don't be a dick to people outright for no reason, and you'll eventually start to know people. Considering nobody in this band has even really been seen at any shows whatsoever by anyone who goes to Providence shows on a regular basis... it has been said already in the thread, these guys have not paid their dues and are firing bullets, and once the public at large gets bored of them (when you sign to major labels and try to get on "big" tours based around that, that's when you're REALLY catering to hipsters), they're going to find themselves having a tough time getting any sort of shows because people will not forget the harsh words, myself included. |
|
And one last point I forgot to address in the realm of TL;DR...
The simple fact of the matter is that these kids are not qualified to say that the old scene was better than what's going on now because they weren't there. I was on the tail end of it myself and I wouldn't be the best judge. I can sit here and say "I completely respect what Fort Thunder was doing back in the 90s" and it can ring 100% true, but it would be impossible for me to say that the scene now is a mere shadow of what it was then, because the fact of the matter is that I wasn't there and I can't ever know. I don't buy into the rosy eyed mentality that just because something's already been documented it's better and the more I stick around, the more I wonder what people just getting into the scene now would have to say about stuff I saw maybe 6-7 years ago, that is if anyone even cares (probably not). |
|
super secret = couldn't be bothered to dig a bit, this is harder than downloading off iTunes
KAZAA GENERATION SELLOUT |
|
super secret shows suck and are full of pretentious hipsters. do not support. |
|
all moot points. robin pulled excalibur out of a thousand year old stone and slayed the idea of DIY shows months ago. RIP. |

You guys just wish you were going to Denmark like us. |

meh. i lived in providence in the early-mid '90s and thought fort thunder was a total rich kid/art school brat scene and hated all their gimmicky noise bands. |

Only porn with the f-zero gx soundtrack as backing music is real

I'm not so sure I really disagree with most of what they said. except for the "providence should be nuked" part. There is some truth to what they're saying. However, if you wanted to get away from greedy promoters and pretentious hipsters I don't think playing doom and being signed to metal blade takes care of that.
I happen to like the warehouse shows. But, there have been a few times where I'd bring a friend who is out of their element, meaning they don't like most heavy music, and don't know anybody there that have been treated as outsiders. |
