"This personal story is told from the perspective of satellite engineer and vocalist Michael Dafferner, who is a member of an unknown 'math-core' metal band called Car Bomb. Over the course of three years--and three tours--he interviews the groups he performs with and questions why they are following the same frustrating path. Struggling with the reality of working a nine-to-five job and the desire to be a full-time musician, he examines why he chose such an unpopular genre of music. As he tours with more successful bands he begins to uncover the true meaning of success and why these bands take such big risks. Includes interviews with Lamb of God, Gojira, Richard Christy and many more"

I've watched the first 14 minutes or so just out of curiosity as a "filmmaker." I really don't get the pop music/metal juxtaposition. I mean the whole point of playing metal is to not play pop music correct? Of course the two are going to have different draws. I don't see anything wrong with assuming that the film's audience would understand "death metal" is less popular than pop music. There's no need to explain it like this film's exposition does.

Second, I don't really get this assumption that if they were playing pop music their tours would be more successful. Would they? I think about it. Pop music gets its exposure through radio play a lot more mainstream channels. There aren't really DIY pop shows. If anything metal and hardcore provides a totally unique experience for unknowns to have an opportunity to play live shows without label support or commercial backing. The price you pay, of course, is that 90% of them are terrible.

The storytelling is all over the place and super heavy on voiceovers. VO's are fine for making your production teacher happy, but IRL you need to show your story instead of telling it.

My respect to anyone with the guts to make an hour long documentary even if it's on their own band, and the guts to do a nationwide tour. ITS 3-days kick my ass, so I can't knock anybody for touring hard.

ya I take issue with this too. being on both sides of the equation with a metal band and a more "poppy" type rock band. it was definitely easier setting up a tour for the metal band. my rock band has no contacts because all the bands in this genre are fucking terrible, full of bro-fags that dont give a shit about building any kind of scene, or dont trade shows etc. its all about who you know and how hard you are willing to work for it. the rest is bullshit without label support or commercial backing

Car Bomb is 'unknown?' Really?

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Jan 11,2012 4:29pm
in the grand scheme of things you could probably say that.

Compared to Shania Twain they're microscopic.

p.s. I've never heard of them.
