I dunno, if you really want on the show you should be smart enough to find the right avenues (not a messageboard).
Build a sense of professionalism, it makes your band look better and might encourage people to book you from seeing you on shows, not through constant self-promotion.
I know that's how I see it when I book stuff. |

I've done that before, and I've done it as more of a reactionary thing than anything else...in my mind, I'll say "let me ask to get on that show" and just post it to get it out there so I don't risk taking too much time in asking and then the spot's been filled because of it. |

I agree with this entirely... especially seeing as this board covers areas of New England where I go to shows sometimes and even know a couple people but don't really have much in the way of contact info for show booking. |

How's that working for you? Regardless of whether or not it's annoying to the bookers (though it is), the fact is that desperation is not attractive in most any context. Sometimes it's harmless to ask, and certainly this board isn't a bad place to network, but constant asking is basically like saying "No one is interested in booking my band, we haven't bothered to network and trade shows with other bands, but we're available to play any time, any where, with any lineup."
It shouldn't be any great surprise that this might leave some people with the impression that you can't draw and aren't worth booking. |

its worked quite well actually, ive booked tours/toured the country numerous times and met some amazing people in my last band...i usually only contact people personally ive met at shows or in bands we've already played with...everyone i meet i exchange contact info with who i can help/can help me.
again, im not cold calling people here to sell them vattnet vis-scar removal cream...

Right, I guess I should have asked "How's the public asking working for you?"
Obviously it sounds like you're on the ball with networking, and even a bit of cold-calling is necessary from time to time (i.e. "We'll be in your city something time during X week and I see you've booked Y and Z in the past, any chance you might set something up for us and them?")... On the other hand, even if it's informal, posting about wanting on a show put together by a booker you don't know is a cold-call in a public forum, no less... And having booked shows, I'd say it's not so much the asking to be put on A show that's an annoyance, but being asked to be put on a PARTICULAR show. Unless the promoter is specifically asking for band submissions, when they post show info, chances are they're really not interested in volunteers, even if the lineup is incomplete.
Maybe I'm just projecting from my own experiences, but I found it really irksome to have to conjure up a polite brush-off for bands I didn't even want to book in the first place, in the midst of trying to get people interested in the show itself. |
