Weird that they made a video for the weakest track ("Illumination" still a pretty good track though IMO) of the EP. Thought they would have made the video for this beast ..
Fuck, this opener is devastating. I don't listen to this band nearly enough. They literally played around the corner from my house the other night and I missed it like a broke ass tool.
I read this elsewhere and thought it was a very interesting point.
Scion targets 18-24 year old buyers, and has had THE MOST SUCCESSFUL BRAND LAUNCH IN THE HISTORY OF NORTH AMERICAN AUTO SALES. Scion uses alternative media to promote. Its not just metal, its garage, funk, electronic music, and other shit I hate. And the zines, shows, and records that they put out have helped them BREAK SALES RECORDS. THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE FUCK THEY ARE DOING.
Scion sells "incomplete" cars, and their marketing research has found that owners spend as much in the first 36 months of ownership to customize the car as to buy it. While people might think of it as FREE SHIT MAAAN, they are part of a larger machine that is working better than conventional advertising that is now ineffective on 18-24 year-olds. People might still look for that purse or jeans or watch or haircut that really lets the world know who their are, they have started to look for themselves to define that image instead of listening to advertising. So Scion has found a way to put its product into culture away from the mainstream and just let the consumer discover it. They don't think they are being sold anything, they think they found out about a car that is based on Toyota engineering (and is probably a smarter purchase than any new north american car). I think that most people could benefit from some media literacy, and its really disappointing that bands I really enjoy both musically and as people such as Magrudergrind, Noisear, Bastard Noise, Mind Eraser, Neurosis, Brutal Truth, and many others have signed on with this materialistic advertising juggernaut.
I already had a deep anti-Scion stance that was hardened upon reading this. I'm personally of the notion that we should keep normal fucking people away from this type of music, that we should keep things DIY, and this hobby of mine should not be used to promote outside corporate interests whatsoever. If the culture behind all this means nothing to you then thanks for allowing folks like me who truly value being part of a subculture for and by weirdos designed to escape the normal path of life and the way normal people do things to be thrown under the bus by this empty gesture of false appreciation. Fuck you assholes.
No one is forced to buy a Scion correct? Cause that would be an epensive Immolation EP.

Nor do I expect normal people to start becoming Immolation superfans because of the free EP. If a 'normal' person does hear this and realizes they actually love it, maybe they were a metalhead waiting to happen anyway.
If you're talking about labels like Relapse, Earache, etc... those are labels out to sell a product. Labels that get their music put on mainstream radio are out to sell a product. One thing I really like about DIY grind is that people aren't doing it to push a product, they put out records themselves because they have a passion for the music. It's not their job, it's their hobby. Shows and records and all the stuff we take for granted are not a right, they're a privilege and they take work to set up, and I think we can all agree the most fun shows that people on this board attend are the ones in basement/DIY spaces where we can bring our own beer, there's no hired security so we can get as rowdy as we please, and do things our way. It really disappoints me that some people are letting Scion into the scene because they put on shows and put out records that are free that no small DIY person could for monetary reasons. People on here bitch about places like the Palladium all the time, and I've certainly seen my fair share of hate for Wal-Mart/chain restaurants and the like on here too, so how is this really any different?
I guess to condense that, you can sit there and say "I'm not forced to buy a Scion", but if the company is putting out music you want to hear and yet is not actually associated with it directly in any way, in your mind you are going to associate Scion with something positive in your life regardless. I don't like this company acting like it understands me or my hobby, and I certainly don't want them having anything to do with it because I don't trust that they're doing this for the right reasons for one fucking second. I have the ability to keep them out of what I do and I feel I have a personal responsibility to do so in order to save what I hold sacred about the music. So maybe you guys don't feel the same way. All I can really do is say I'm disappointed, but if you work with Scion, then you're not part of my scene... as far as I'm concerned, you're a jobber, and I don't take kindly to people putting out music because it's their job. That's what boy bands are all about.
As I have NO qualms with the exploitation of buttdarts (sorry- 85% of people into the same shit I'm into are FUCKING BUTTDARTS), I would jump at the chance for one of my bands to be backed by Scion.
In before Lamp has to longhaul a trailerload of Scions.
Heh, I got sick of the trucking industry real quick and have sought out other employment... I asked for home time and just never went back and they never called me back. Works for me. The company I worked for wasn't a car carrier company anyway, we just hauled refrigerated loads, but that would be funny as shit.

Magrudergrind has definitely evolved from what they once were. I've seen them 8 times, the first time being in 2006, and the attitude changed completely from the first four times to the last four times. I really don't think their music has aged all that well, and I don't believe that Avi is really a part of the DIY community anymore (he may never have been based on what I've heard about how he runs the band). In any case, I stopped listening to them when I found out about them putting out a record with Scion and haven't missed them whatsoever.

That's extremely naive and short-sighted. You mean to tell me if you made enough money from your band to not have to work a regular job, you would quit the band? Of course that depends on what you have to do to make that type of money in the band, but for the most part, I think that's just a ridiculous thing to say.
You may say "well, sure, I would take it, but it's not my goal for my band, and if it is, you're in a band for the wrong reasons." I'd respond to that that you are in the extreme minority, at least today, and that most bands that say they agree with your view are either equally as naive or are straight up lying their asses off. The type of ethic you are citing is dead, because people that believed in that long ago realized it's not practical in the real world even though it's great in theory.

The only people that are really living comfortably off music are the top of the pops... even people who get played on the radio are typically poor and I can make more money than them in a year working some shitty entry level job.

I will make a proposal right now though... if the day ever comes where I sign to Relapse or Earache or let Scion release my shit or do something similar, then I will not make any excuses or arguments when any of you wave these comments in my face, and if anything I'd encourage the mockery of me.

That's all fine and good, but a lot of the bands you listen to don't feel that way. If they did feel the same way you do, you probably would never had heard them because they wouldn't be recording to release to the public either. I'm sure you listen to bands that have the goal of trying to be heard by more than just themselves, or else they would never leave the garage.

That's 100% true. My point was that if a band you were in was ever at that point in theory, would you quit. Not that you would play the type of music that would get to that point today anyways, but I was putting that out there.
