Due to the coming pres election, no doubt. Waste of time and money, thanks again Obama.

haha, come on dude, that's not how washington works. i'm no obama supporter, but you know the DEA and ATF do what they want...

Obama's come on pretty strong as an anti-weed dude. It's one of the many bummers that have come from his administration.

The people who pay the administration make the rules.
You really thing the Big Pharmaceutical companies would want the legalization of weed? They can't control the substance, and anyone can grow it.
It's another corporate machine that will be hard to take down.

"The Obama administration moved two months ago to toughen federal tactics against pot dispensaries, even though the earlier policy had been generally a hands-off approach in the 16 states where medical marijuana is legal."

Murder pharmaceutical CEOs or STFU

i'm not denying he's a puppet, he flip-flopped on this big time. but when they say "obama administration" it means anybody in the white house. he's letting it happen for political points. i'm just saying he didn't get up on a podium reagan-style and rallied for the war on drugs (did he?)

No, he just did his quiet flip-flop in time for the coming elections, proving once again that he's just another scumbag polictician. At least we knew where Reagan stood -- though Ronnie was quite the creep.

Not sure I agree with this reasoning. National polls have legalization at 50/50, and in this election cycle where progressives and libertarians seem to have the loudest voices at the moment (not the fundies or neocons for once), there's a lot more to gain by being pro than against weed especially with the demographics Obama needs to win, so it's a political loser to toughen up on it at the very moment where every political analyst has noted Obama has spent the last month appealing to and shoring up his progressive base. It makes me agree with ark that this is an independent move by an agency, not political operatives grinning and twittling their fingers in some back room in the White House, because if they are they suck and should be fired for incompetence.

BUT... the fact remains that this is a good reason to call and e-mail the WH and complain about this, because those agencies are under their jurisdiction, and when things like this are brought to Obama's attention he often does something about them. Despite what has been said in this thread, even the article quoted notes he has been over his term really good on this issue, specifically with an order he personally made to the Justice Department when he came into office:

(From Marijuana USA, Trish Regan, CNBC)

"In 2009, President Obama directed the U.S. Department of Justice to defer to state law regarding medical marijuana. This single memo turned seventy years of prohibition on its head. It advised US Attorneys in medical marijuana states to not go after individuals who are in compliance with state laws... Suddenly, people applied for medical marijuana licenses in droves. The number of dispensaries jumped from about a dozen to more than a thousand across the state of Colorado, outnumbering Starbucks 5 to 1."

Best President on the issue there's been by far, but he needs to make sure agencies continue to comply with his order.

That's what i was going for Shadow. It's more like, if the DEA is in danger of losing some funding because Obama says to defer to state law regarding dispensaries, somebody in the White House will secretly not let that happen. The DEA are just one of the many arms of government that likes to work in secret and get money funneled to them one way or the other.

Because of bama's order to the DoJ, dispensary numbers skyrocketed, therefore giving the DEA more bait to garner funding and more targets to catch.

Ironically coming from people that call themselves libertarians and believe in "small federal government".

This also has a LOT to do with it.

Yeah, the ATF and DEA are the worst of the worst. Obama may be getting undermined on the issue. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of horseshit surrounding this change in policy that us peons will never hear about.

Regardless of whether you smoke or not, it's just a waste of time and tax payers' money to be chasing after some dinky pot shops.

I have a hard time buying that this is being done behind Obama's back, or whatever. I mean, if you give a directive to lay off, there has to then be some oversight to make sure they follow the directive. This is classic pandering to get votes.

and if the press knows, how could he not know what's going on? He has to, but will he come out at a press conference and say "I did not authorize or condone this, and will be enforcing my [2009] stance."? I'm not holding my breath.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Oct 7,2011 11:50am
he depends on progressive votes, so i don't know. the government doesn't do what the president says at the drop of a hat. he only has that power over the military. i love when people say "blame obama" like he is the sole person in charge. technically, he can't order the DEA to do anything, unless there's a law for it.
