Someone please inform the mindful and considerate staff of AS220 that they've booked 2 bands that obviously aren't from Rhode Island...

Otherwise people might start to think that they're completely full of shit.

Fuck AS220.

Mike, have you ever read this? http://lotsofnoise.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9886 It's the thread about Robin vs. AS220. I lol'd

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Sep 26,2011 12:28pm
"Also no quotes in hardcore please we can get fined a million dollars."

lol. That's worth a fistbump. I'm reading this thread, and all I see are a bunch of Provi dickhangers putting their heads in the sand. Fuck AS220 forever.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 26,2011 12:28pm
You have to sign up for Lots of Noise to read it, unfortunately.

Mike, I think the problem might have more to do with people from out of state booking the place rather than bands playing the place. If you got a solid RI contact and the right show, I don't see why they wouldn't let you play.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 26,2011 12:34pm
Though if I can defend Robin on one thing, the same show was happening in Boston and those bands don't draw for shit in Providence anyway. He could have hung a million flyers weeks in advance and the show probably still would have had a poor turnout. The fans just aren't there.

not true. we were supposed to play as220 awhile back with a mix bill of providence and boston bands (booked by someone from RI) and it couldn't happen because of some moritorium on boston bands. fucking lame.

i'll still be at this show though.

Damn, that just sounds fucking retarded.

Despite all that, if we're just looking at the AS220 vs. Robin argument, I'm still siding with AS220. But I would love to see more Boston bands in town any day.

toggletoggle post by Czarnobog at Sep 26,2011 12:44pm edited Sep 26,2011 12:44pm
i get prioritizing local arts, local bands etc... especially when i'm sure thats what they get city funding for doing. but an actual moritorium on bands from a neighboring city doesn't seem like it does the local scene any favors... especially considering some of these same bands/promoters hook providence bands up with shows in boston on the regular.

toggletoggle post by Czarnobog at Sep 26,2011 12:52pm
but whatever, not the bands fault. and there's always other venues to play. it just doesn't help providence's image as an insular artsy-scenester city any.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 26,2011 12:56pm
My problem has more to do with the way Robin composed himself in that thread. If not banned for what the bands did (and I do agree with his point of punishing the bands rather than the promoters, I mean, what is a promoter supposed to do in that circumstance, run onto the stage and physically stop the bands from playing covers?), then the guy should just be banned for being an asshole needlessly.

Fortunately for all the awesome bands in Providence, Boston doesn't have it's head lodged up its own hipster ass, and I get to see cool bands play right near me all the time regardless of where they're from.

But if you like having your musical selections filtered by people on a baseless hipster elitist agenda then by all means Providence folk, please keep supporting AS220. Please keep pretending that the Providence scene has never benefited from Boston in any way. And please keep pretending that scapegoating Boston serves a purpose. Sooner or later it might all come true.

i express my protest at punk shows the punk way: i drink in the alley.

FEEL THE HURT AS220.

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 26,2011 1:32pm
Definitely needs more Olneyville warehouses and Firehouse 13 stuff. And maybe some new places I've heard about...

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Sep 26,2011 1:58pm
RE: Firehouse 13. They're a much more open minded venue, but have the same silly no cover songs rule. I won't name names, but a friends' band played there a while back and tried to do a cover song in protest of the dumb rule. They were too drunk to play it and just ate shit instead.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS should be working at Sep 26,2011 2:02pm
I guess with copyright laws, if a band plays a cover during a show, technically the venue owes royalties on the song

I would imagine that's an extremely hard law to enforce, but I would imagine it's just easier for a venue to enact that type of rule instead of having to pay every time a band plays a cover without notifyying the club beforehand

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Sep 26,2011 2:02pm
Firehouse 13 also takes a much bigger cut off the door than AS220 does from what I've been told.

I also want to know, exactly when did this ban on Boston go into effect anyway? I've definitely seen Boston bands at AS220 before, must have been earlier this year.

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Sep 26,2011 2:53pm
Sorry to LB for turning this into an AS220 debate.

toggletoggle post by nekronaut  at Sep 26,2011 2:58pm
Only playing an Absu cover at AS220 without announcing it as a cover is real.. Know it or you're not OLD ABSU FAN.

I don't think it's a ban per se, but it is extremely hard for Boston bands to get in there.

HYEO played both places, and I personally thought they were both pretty awesome places to play. I would def play either place again if given the opportunity

No, it's a moratorium.. Venue said so themselves

Nope. No you haven't. Boston bands have never played AS220. I didn't spend every other Saturday for YEARS going to the Met to see Boston and Providence bands playing shows with national touring acts. Also no one from Boston has ever drove to Providence and paid money to see a show at AS220.

All these are gospel fact under the tweed curtain of the hipster reich.
