Ever heard of the giant puff ball? Its this crazy mushroom, looks like this:

Thats just a small one though, they apparently can become as large as beach balls. Anyway, they're also pretty damn tasty to consume. They taste sort of like a weird combination of chicken and portabello mushroom when fried as I did this weekend. Thought some of you might be interested since they're a wild local mushroom. We picked this one out of my friends yard on Friday.

TL;DR: cool story bro.

I've never seen a shroom like that before, it even looks like chicken in the pick where you are slicing it...or tofurkey. I bet slicing it and then marinating/grilling one of those fuckers would be tops. I would do garlic, extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper , balsamic vinegar ... Shit would be so cash

It had the texture of chicken in the best parts, it was a bit like cottage cheese in the rest. We're going to try to grab the ones growing now a bit earlier so we can cut big steaks off of them, as the Internet has recommended.

I've seen those around.
Interesting stuff; I just don't have the balls or knowledge in figuring out what shrooms are edible and which ones aren't..

This one has no poisonous look-alikes so its pretty safe. After discovering the growth I checked them out and they're actually recommended for people who want to start gathering mushrooms in general. (because apparently that is a thing)

this is relevant to my interests. any hints as to where these can be found growing in the wild in Eastern MA?

toggletoggle post by Doomkid   at Sep 12,2011 2:11am
There's been a large bloom under a random bush at my friend's house in Arlington, but aside from that I am unsure. However I hope to be tossing a couple of the mature ones under other bushes and in good possible growing locations in Cambridge and Allston in the next few days. They each contain a few trillion spores...

Regardless, other than that one spot I've never seen them in MA before.

hahahahahahahahaha holy shit i just choked on my pop tart.

also i see no point in eating wretched mushrooms unless they contain psylocibin.

While the bottom of this mushroom was nasty, it was just like cutting off a bad bit of an apple. But yeah, I guess seeing a weird white ball on the ground the size of your foot and thinking "I wonder if I could eat that" is not a normal response.

Ever have a wart? This is eating the earth's wart. Gross.

Nice, I loves the mushrooms. Looks tasty.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Sep 12,2011 12:08pm
i mean that was probably pretty bland if u didnt marinade it no?

toggletoggle post by Doomkid   at Sep 12,2011 12:22pm
We rolled in in bread crumbs w/scrambled eggs and garlic before cooking. It was actually pretty flavorful on its own, next one I want to cut into bigger pieces so the breading:mushroom ratio is lower. The texture was what was ridiculous though, I saw it described elsewhere online as a "marsh-mellow center" but it was really more like a perfectly textured almost-melted cheese.

I would rather marinade a sock.
