caring if something is or isn't hipster makes you a hipster.
caring if something is =/= getting it the fuck out in the open, calling it what is is, and keeping it safely quarantined from the real shit

i think its just gotten to the point where complaining about hipsters and this being hipster and that being hipster is more fucking annoying than actual hipsters.
Well dressed does not equal hipster. American Apparel t-shirts that I own have FAR outlasted any other non AA shirts. Hipster = someone who does something to follow a trend, to seek validation or likes things to "fit in" or feel "cool". I even will go as far as stating that elitistism is a form of Hipsterdom.

anyone that cares about the values of heavy metal should care about hipster culture destroying it. it is watered down garbage now, why not stand the ground and fight the plague. bunch of posers

This is opposed by the "but everything is everything, nothing is different from anything else, it's all about the music, maaaaaaaaaaaaan" brigade.

hahahahahah well dressed = skin tight clothing and neatly parted hair?

all these idiots who claim to like metal but dont care about how its all mainstream are all a bunch of posing newbies. why do you think northern elite was formed? because you are all a plague who are in it for the ride. then you say you listen to it for yourself. where were you when chuck died? oh yea, thats right.. listening to Creed. give me a break you posing sack of shits.

There is such as thing as having standards for standards' sake, as opposed to having them to seek approval. Giving a fuck about metal doesn't mean you give a fuck for points.

what destroyyoualot said. we care about metal because metal is our lives. we dont want to see it turn into a trend and it already has. we stand our ground. i dont care what you people listen to, but i know you listen to 'metal' and cant tell me the history of the genre. give me a break you swashbuckling newbies. you kids make me sick, go back to listening to your creed and godsmack and stay out of my genre of music.

I think you're being closed minded. Just because YOU care about metal culture, doesn't mean that someone else has to in order to be a real metalhead. I honestly couldn't care less what's popular and what's not. Which yeah, some of my more "trendy" friends make fun of me for. (for instance, liking THE FACELESS, apparently i'm not supposed to because they're too popular and hip... or The Black Dahlia Murder, which i also like etc...) but you think because i don't care what's hip and what's not that i'm not a real metalhead? That i pretend to like the music? How does that even make sense? You're saying that if i DON'T care about what's popular and what's not, that I DON'T really like the music for myself?
Sorry bud, but it totally sounds like you got this shit backwards. IMHO metal dudes who get down on popular/hip bands because they're "watering down" the scene are just too afraid of loosing their "individuallity." You can't STAND the thought that you're NOT actually different from everyone else in the world... that you're just another person, with nothing that makes you special...
Because you see, I don't listen to metal to feel "different" or to be "an individual", i do it because i love the music. Anyone who ever tries to say that i SHOULD care about metal culture, or what is/isn't hip, is just fooling themselves, and in it for ALL the wrong reasons.
FAGGOT.

like i said, go back to listening to your Creed and Tool and stay out of my genre of music.
I think being a metalhead means you enjoy listening/playing metal. anything else is bullshit. does this mean I condone hipster culture? no but i'm also not gonna spend my time worrying or complaining about a pretensious sect of humanity that has nothing valid to offer... unless of course it directly inhibits my ability to listen to or participate in said metalhead activities. i shall cross that bridge when i come to it.
Suggesting that the scene die out in a decade or so because nobody new or young is allowed in to help support the acts they like (and line their pockets) is counterproductive.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that if your entire life revolves around metal, you are probably the least interesting person in the cosmos.

Spelling poser "poseur" = poser.
Oh shit, was that hipster of me?
Being worried about it being hipster is hipster, so, yes.

As far as holding heavy metal's unwritten sacred rites and standards high, no argument here, and I certainly don't give a fuck if it's up to someone else.
ok then watch your genre of music dwindle away before you eyes because of people like you. in 20 years you wont be listening to metal anymore
ooorrrr... i can listen to some good metal records (as well as non metal), play heavy music, support local up coming bands that are this genre's future, and not give a fuck about anyone who thinks otherwise because they dont matter to me.
i think i'll just do that.
post by DestroyYouAlot at Jun 8,2011 3:14pm edited Jun 8,2011 3:15pm
well ya know, strangely enough.. the genre of metal that I love, progressive/technical death/thrash has been steadily growing in these last ten years. strange huh?
I'm just gonna leave this picture of King Diamond drinking an iced mocha latte right here. No commentary, I think it speaks for itself.

suck myself off? for what? caring about a genre of music and not the influx of filthy fans that are all hip? we are elite, you are all scum. i cant believe some idiot believes local bands are the genres future. hahahahahahaha
. i cant believe some idiot believes local bands are the genres future. hahahahahahaha
umm so i guess all the bands you like were never local or regional bands at some point. ya that makes perfect sense. fucking dolt.

Yes. Everyone should be narrow-minded. Would you like your precious metal so much if everyone was into it like you are? You'd probably start listening to hip hop because it wasn't what everyone else liked.

Something being called "elite" is usually indicator #1 that it's not. Wheeee!

my point exactly. He hates metal being popular.. because he's DIFFERENT DAMN IT!
i love how all of you idiots have nothing better to do than sit around and complain about the use of the word hipster.
Troll/Hypocrite, you be the judge.

Only being accused of being a horrible troll when working outside with no reception or time to do such shenanigans is real.
Thanks for the thoughts <3
I didn't really think it was you. Argument was just too silly. Arguing that you NEED to care about what's hip... in order to be a real metalhead? ughh.

I think there's good points on both sides of the aisle. There's no question that metal is full of shallow-minded socialites who latch onto current trends for non-musical reasons. There's no denying that. As musicians, we would want the kind of fan that enjoys the music and art we create. Real fans are ones who connect with the music and understand what the artist is portraying.
On the otherhand, I also believe the subcultural values of metal should be preserved, before we lose grasp of what metal represents. Subcultural values you say? Indeed. "Hipsters" are those who have no real subculture to latch on, and are nomadic in the sense of moving around music scenes. With metal, I feel, this is different. Metal today is bot what it was in the past. You will always have your traditionalist fans, and your liberal fanbase.
Metal has changed, its fanbase has changed. We live in a world where art is constantly evolving, whether it be by rehashing old sounds to make them new again while blending your own style into it(OFFICIALLY GHOST), or by cross-genre mixing. Crossover is to shoegaze blackmetal as technical deathmetal is to prog metal. Everythings been done now, and the majority of the fanbase has no real identity because of metal being so widespread bs available now.
Listen to what you want to listen to, don't do it for social reasons, and try to delve into the classics. Appreciate the art for what it was, what it still is, and what it will be. Filter out the bad bands. Filter out the false fans.
Death to hipsters, restore metal. Move backwards to move forward.
dressing like you like metal and going to metal shows and buying metal merch and talking about metal and hating on metal bands you dont like just might = hipster. or you might just like metal and stuff and shit.
