BRING BACK MARKS SHOWPLACE

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at May 3,2011 8:27am
Dour won a battle of the bands like 5 years ago. We were paid handsomely. It was hilarious.

I have no problem with selling tickets, as long as there is not a required amount to sell.

toggletoggle post by I‘m Thirsty Entertainment at May 3,2011 8:36am
I dont see a problem with selling tickets as long as your not paying out of pocket, But i am a promoter so my opinion doesnt matter.
We also have 15 street team kids that sell tickets and will help bands with ticket sales. If everyone works together the show is a success and everyone makes money. Bands that think its not their job to promote or sell tickets are the lazy ones or the rock stars.

Let the hating beging. By the way if your looking to buy tickets to any of our upcoming shows at rocko's go to www.imthirstyentertainment.com thanks!

i'm fairly on board with this but it really depends on the situation.

OK I'm pretty clueless about booking and promoting shows, but I almost never see flyers around, and have never met a street team - is physical promotion as big a deal as that promoter is arguing?

toggletoggle post by goatcatalyst   at May 3,2011 10:48am
There's a couple bands I won't book on the rare occasion I book a show because I know the band couldn't be bothered to pull their weight whether they think they're "above" flyering / promiting or just plain have entitlement issues.

we try to flyer local shows and parking lots for similar genre shows. passed out like 300 flyers for my 420fest and it didnt see to make much of a difference vs usual attendence. kinda stinks. but gets bands names out i guess. i'll keep doing it but probably not at the same level.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at May 3,2011 10:52am
Agreed with the above sentiments about no sale requirement being best. It was really the cutest thing when blue came to my shows and tossed around more death metal flyers than there were people there. It does help get the word out.

I know that promoter in the argument and have played shows for him in the past. Turnout was usually pretty dismal, but I do recall one all ages show in brockton where a bunch of teenage boys bloodied each other's heads up with some violence in the pit. That was enjoyable.

Well, cities are starting to crack down on flyering. Aren't Cambridge and Boston fining clubs for flyers posted about their shows?

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at May 3,2011 12:56pm
ya...still pissed about that. Does someone want to compile a good list of where flyers can be put up legally?

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at May 3,2011 1:02pm
Bulletin boards within venues/rehearsal spaces/etc are good places to put up flyers. Or just carry a bunch around on you at all times and pass them out to people who look like they would go to your show. I've done that before around train stations, since you're free to pass out whatever you want but not post things on the wall. DIY street team? lol

toggletoggle post by Sinistas   at May 3,2011 1:06pm
Understood and agreed.

quite commendable.

only doing it Black Flag-style (wheat paste / flyer / wheat paste) is real. that shit is NEVER coming off.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at May 3,2011 6:08pm
wheat paste you say?

.... interesting

toggletoggle post by Alexecutioner at May 3,2011 6:09pm
there are a number of local bulletins posted in Allston that you can flyer.

mass marketing doesn't have a high success rate. About what 1%-10% of people might go. who hasn't seen this first hand? give out three hundred get 3 people to show up.

I've flier-ed similar shows, I'm not saying it should stop, it must be and should be done! It should be done more so.

I've been trying to think up of a more focused attack that’s not fliering, and not internet based to promote local shows. Something with more of a success rate around 25%. Still thinking it up, haha.(word of mouth but, I wanted something more material)

I've found that the more personal i get with the person the more likely they'll show up. But at the same time i fucking hate being that douche that like "hey check out my band bro dude guy." Physically hurts me. Another problem is that I can also be quite the dick if the person i'm talking to is a tool, 30 second conversation can reveal that.

Yet another thing that works, organizing car pools. I’m on the south shore, public transportation sucks, and gas is $4. My band would never have been able to bring out 19 people (not including band members) all the way out to fucking Worcester if I didn’t set up carpools for interested parties. Ok that’s not a lot of people really, but our draw would have been maybe <5 if I didn’t do this.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at May 3,2011 6:15pm
guerilla marketting ftw

toggletoggle post by Alexecutioner at May 3,2011 6:25pm
i have a new idea that i havent pursued yet.

its called stalker marketing.

pick a few targets, find out where they live, then break in their house. proceed by covering all of their personal belongings with flyers... all of their family photos? flyerd. they try to flush their toilet? too bad its clogged, with flyers. kill their dog and write "go to this show... or else" in blood on their living room wall.

Fear my friends is one of the best motivators on earth.

if that doesnt work, well then i dont know what the fuck to do

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at May 3,2011 6:27pm

I don’t agree with selling tickets ever! This is just an easy way for the promoter to sit back and do nothing, if you’re not going to promote the show don’t book it. Most promoters know what bands promote their shows and what ones don’t so the promoter should know who to book and who not too. If it’s a local only show and your asked to sell tickets kick the promoter in the nuts, you shouldn’t need a promoter for a local only show. If it’s a national show and your asked to sell tickets still kick the promoter in the nuts for agreeing to pay the tour package $5000 and he now wants you to sell tickets to cover his ass. FUCK YOU!!!

In regards to getting people to shows:
The biggest problem with getting people to shows is there are way too many local only shows with bands people really don’t care about. Why any local band wants to play their city 4-5 times in 2-3 months baffles me, and these are local only shows. If it was a show with Suffocation, Nile, Vader or so on then play them all but too many bands play local only shows every other weekend and wonder why 6 people show up?!?!?! Well they just saw you play the same set last week and the week before that. One good local Death Metal show a month is good enough for any city, make the people/fans/friends want to see you. Bands that have to text/call/email all their friends to come to their show should be shot fucken dead. Who the fuck wants to play to their god damn friends when you can do that in your practice space?!?!?!??!

Give this man a prize. I also don't want to "vote" for your band to do anything.

You are all scum. Why dont you be grateful that we ( Promoters ) let your shitty band play OUR venue, that costs more money than you make in a month. Here is the deal, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING BAND has sold tickets. Even the large touring bands you see now. They all came from no where and went to the top, Along the way they had to sell tickets. Did their JOB to promote THEIR band. I wont promote your band, Fuck that. I promote the show. All you shitty bands that have no draw should just stop the bitching. Go do your own fucking show at a legion, Lose a lot of money cuz all the shitty bands you book have no draw and you wont make anyone sell tickets to their fans cuz your too punk for that. Then you will learn. PROMOTE YOUR BAND YOU LAZY FUCKS! If anyone thinks promoters make a killing of this your in dream land.

I'm sure this is the general consensus. Help the show; but don't let it be a passed off "burden" by someone who's trying to skim off whatever extra may be made.
