I'm totally anti-far left, lunatic leanings politically speaking unlike most NPR fans but I listen to NPR all day every day at work. I'll be bummed if it doesn't survive.

if NPR was that great, they'd survive without welfare handouts. if it dies, its only because it deserves to

NPR goes against the grain of Mainstream Medias propaganda machine. not surprised..but saddened nonetheless.

didnt say i was for that either. im just sayin we all shouldnt have to pay for a radio network that at best 1/3 of the american public listens to. if that 1/3 wants it so bad, they'll pay for it from their pockets, not mine

If you're that butthurt over NPR getting federal funds I'll spot you the 1.35 in taxes that goes to the CPB

its not about my 1.35. its about the 15 tril in deficit. i think cutting NPR is a pretty harmless way of cutting it. slash it now

There's nodoubt cuts need to be made. It's just that cutting NPR's funding while leaving the Bush Tax Cuts in place is like treating cancer with a pedicure.

Didn't they just have that guy who got fired from NPR say that he actually hoped they lost funding because he thought NPR would do better in the private sector? Shit, how much money do you think PBS has made off of Sesame Street, Barney the Dinosaur and Dora the Explorer alone?

This.

It's an opportunistic cut. Without NPR's public funding, they're subject to corporate bullying and manipulation.

Dude, PBS is suffering even more than NPR in the money sector. One of my parents works in the program budgeting department and they've had to make horrible cuts and such in the past several years because of a reduction in federal funding. NPR and PBS wouldn't survive with the same quality programming in a free market because the collective brain of the market is too stupid to realize that long-term investments like: good children's programming, deep investigative reporting and educational programming for adults are good ideas.

the fed gov't only supplies 20% of NPR's annual funding. if they do some cutting of their own, they will survive

when the fcc tried putting in place the low power FM licensing system, NPR was one of the front-runners in opposing low powered community radio. they are anti-free speech. they dont give a shit about bias any less than fox news does.

toggletoggle post by ctb0rderpatrol at Mar 18,2011 8:45am
of course im not one to bitch about corperate or government domination of our media without actually doing something about it. we didn't vote for the fcc which in my eyes makes them an illegit regulatory agency. the majority of this country doesnt want to be skimmed to fund npr when most of us live paycheck to paycheck. end of story. not defending statists of either parties here. the "oh well the reps do blah blah blah" strawman argument does nothing for me. they can fuck off too. maybe suggesting we take NPR's funding and diverting it to education would be a good suggestion perhaps?

either way, scope this bad johnny out. 48 watts on the FM band. fuck em if they can't take a joke.

^ LIEKD 2600 TIMES

Quoted from a guy who pays a lot more attention to the govt than I do (he works for the state dept):

So in '87 the GOP gets rid of the Fairness Doctrine, leading to the proliferation of right-wing radio throughout the country, leading to the likes of Limbaugh and Beck. Now they want to defund NPR. Perhaps a recognition that their ideology needs to be insulated from reality to survive?

Sure cut NPR along with everything else that's not 100% necessary and we'll save a little bit of money (likely to be immediately diverted into defense funding). While school systems flounder and not only can't support arts and music but are beginning to cut funding for science and technology lets symbolically cut a sliver of our budget that resonates with the sheepish masses. Why do anything constructive, Americans want a lot of stuff but aren't willing to pay for it, or even to say that rich Americans should pay for it in a way that's fair to everyone. No one needs a Million dollars a year, or a 25000 week long stay in a posh hotel. But the idea that someday dumb Americans with no skills from the middle of nowhere will be rich and might have to pay higher taxes than rich people now is ridiculous. I just don't see what the point is of debating the NPR cuts, when it doesn't make any difference. The idea that this is a legitimate effort to save money in the overall budget is stupid.

these cuts go in line with the cuts for public education funding, the elimination of music, athletics, art classes, the death of any shred of culture this country has. NPR isn't perfect but defunding it won't save the country a goddamn cent.

NPR is not the bastion of culture that it touts it is. new britain CT's polish community is, the appalacian moonshine-running celts are, the midwest family farmers, and their housewives that cook the same dishes that have been in the family for generations are, etc. im sick of the misuse of the word "culture." NPR might tell you that X tribe in Y sewer trench of a country does this or that, but it doesnt mean a thing to any of us listening when our towns turn into stripmalls, farmland gets stripped of its topsoil and replaced with a housing development, and if you're white, forget about expressing your culture. thats racist. can NPR, end the FCC and let our media de-centralise and for the patchwork of communities here to set up their own smaller powered stations. if you wanna save culture in america, you first have to allow for the open and free expression of it. the FCC allows corperate interests and NPR run the show. NPR is guilty of killing culture here just as much as clearchannel communications. they have and will fight tooth and nail to keep low powered community radio stations off the air

If there's no NPR and no FCC then clearchannel and Murdoch and the like will run the show. NPR is a good resource, I agree with you the FCC does more harm than good in many areas but if there's no regulation than the telecom corporations will swallow everything, suffocate low-power radio, etc. They have the power to keep the airways and internet tubes neutral but they haven't done that yet because of the power those corporations have in the govt.

My point about culture is not only without public education culture is diminished, but the stripmalling of america goes hand in hand with deregulation of corporate interests and the free market bulldozing farmland and copyrighting corn.

I guess the main point I want to make is defunding public radio is a political stunt and not doing a damn thing toward keeping federal funding within the country, and won't make a dent in the balance sheet. It's not sensible or effective legislation, it's the cries of a broken government supported by brainwashed idiots.

Culture: The distinctive ideas, customs, social behaviour, products, or way of life of a particular society, people, or period. Hence: a society or group characterized by such customs, etc.

While strip-mall culture is a shitty culture and no one wants to see it grow any more than it already has, you need to sit the fuck down. White people are constantly expressing their culture, perhaps what you see as your particular piece of white culture is not generally approved up by society. Perhaps you should take that as a sign that its time to leave race-based cultural pride in the past.

80 fucking percent of Americans live in cities, its time to stop living in the fucking fantasy of the American as agriculturalist or a rural people.

I agree with your second part but must point out your fatal flaw. If a crisis were to happen and us "city folk" were to start starving, do you think you would be safe on your family's farm. I don't care if you got a gattling gun and are John fucking Rambo, eventually someone will find you while wandering in search of food and devise a plan to kill you and take said food.

Either that or the government will force you to grow food for the army to "protect" you

I like having NPR around, and I hope this doesn't make it through the Senate, but let's not overrate NPR's worth as a news/commentary source either. They still won't use the T-word for "Enhanced Interrogations", their hosts mindlessly gobble up the propagandic talking points of scumbags from "think tanks" like the American Enterprise Institute and the Brookings Institution, their most "liberal" programming is largely apolitical identity/culture fare, and they spend far more time discussing Beltway kabuki than offering real policy analysis or confrontational journalism. It does offer more intelligent programming than commercial radio does, but it still has followed the same pattern of dumbing down and cozying up to the powerful that has been quite noticeable in the commercial MSM over the past 20-25 years.

The intelligence and journalistic value of programs on 90.9 definitely goes up significantly after midnight, when they broadcast the BBC feed. Even though at times it is a mouthpiece for the official British government/NWO-Bilderberg worldview, it still performs a valuable, cutting edge journalistic service. It's probably because journalism in the UK doesn't involve fellating the political and business elite on the air and at Georgetown cocktail parties.
