Fuck yeah, this was just announced. It's the unrelated-but-we-all-know-its-a-sequel sequel to Demon's Souls. DS was one of my favorite games in recent years. This will be getting a world release so no need to import!

Apparently:
- Level of field exploration increased, all fields designed to be seamless with anything visible to be reachable.
- No map display, position marker now available for various uses.
- Dark Souls to be as challenging as Demon's Souls, same level of difficulty, trial and error learning still important.
- Will have nothing to do with Demon's Souls, will not use the connected hub system
- All maps/fields will be inter-connected ALA King's Field. There is a new emphasis on vertical scale, expect taller and more complex environments.
- Character creation no longer class-based
- Play style to allow "more freedom"
- More spells and items. Weapons will have more animations and be more unique.
- Same ol' Demon's Souls online multiplayer!
- No more Soul Tendency
- A brand new but as of yet unready to reveal "mutual role playing" element
- 2011 RELEASE DATE

Doesn't show a whole lot but it's obvious that it's related to DS. Looks like they're focusing on exploration more this time around. I will buy this off the shelf so fast it'll leave a burn mark.

Apparently no one's played Demon Souls. Like Aril, let me school you on a great action RPG. Unlike Aril, this one is modern and played on a PS3 (and can be gotten for cheap nowadays, they sell it $19 new).

DS is an action RPG; think Oblivion, but with less talk and a much better combat engine. The emphasis is on surviving. There's central hub where you can do your restocking and such but once you're in the field it's all about combat. And I'm serious about the combat- it's one of the best I've played in this kind of game. There's several dozen weapons and they all have their own attack moves and animations- and that counts because environment matters- if you hit a wall with a sword swing, it will hit the wall and not connect how you want it to. A clip below of a sample section of the first world, fighting mostly human opponents. This guy is playing a fighter type, although some magic does get thrown around at the end of this clip.

bennyhillifier

No, it's not turn based. But if you're a stats whore, there's plenty of that too.

bennyhillifier

The unique thing about this game is the atmosphere- it's pretty bleak and depressing. The soundtrack is mostly ambient. And it's HARD, at least until the beat the game at least once- you will get used to inching around corners with a shield raised. You will die, and die often. The game will even kill you in the tutorial, just cause it can.

Like boss monsters? There's plenty here too. Here's one of the early bosses, a sorceress bitch. Ignore this player's penchant for destroying furniture at the start of the clip.

bennyhillifier

If you like this sort of game, trust me, it's a good one. That's why I'm psyched for a sequel :p

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Sep 10,2011 3:12pm
It can be difficult, but it's great. You have to take it slow, if you go running into areas blindly you'll be killed quickly and repeatedly.

You will not be able to "level up" or improve until you beat the first area's boss.
If you die, you need to run the whole level again, but in most areas there are shortcuts you can open up- sometimes obvious, sometimes not.
The rings I used the most were Thiefs Ring (which lets you get closer to monsters without them seeing you) and Cling Ring (which grants you 75% health instead of 50% in soul form). Both of these can be found in the first level. Thiefs ring is tricky to find, it's on a ledge with a friendly dude, you must hop over a railing to get to him. Don't worry about being in soul form, you'll be that way for most of the game.
Don't be overburdened. Mobility is fairly crucial in this game.
Once you beat the first level, five more open up and you can choose where to go from there. If an area seems too tough, try coming back to it later.

Plenty of more tips I could give, but one more spoiler tip- kill Yurt when you meet him (I think that's his name, he has a big helmet that looks like a tuning fork). If you don't, he will start killing everyone in the Nexus, your home base, including all the vendors and trainers. That's bad.

Demons souls is one of the best games Ive ever played. Seriously. As challenging and rewarding as the old games of the 90's with amazing graphics and a depressing bleak feel that Elder Scrolls has never been able to touch.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 11,2011 11:28am
this game is impressive. i died 1,000 times last night - i can't beat the first insanely tough heavy armored spearman on the castle catwalk. i'm out of supplies and my char has no magic, i might have to reroll...

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Sep 11,2011 12:32pm
If he has red eyes, don't even go down that way, you're prob not able to beat him now. If he has blue eyes, he's much easier and that's the path you want to take anyway. Bait him into taking a swing at you, then hit him when he's recovering (this tactic applies to a lot of enemies). Don't block him, but stay just out of his range of swing.

Or if you want to be fancy, you can try to lure him down that spiral staircase tower he's next to and hope he falls off the ledge- enemies take damage from falls just like you do. It's probably best to learn how to fight though.

I really enjoyed my temple knight with pole arms and regen. Great pvp character as well.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Sep 12,2011 8:48am
I rerolled a temple knight, high survivability and range, buffed him up to use the bastard sword. Doing much better than I was with the thief. The combat in this game is near perfect, it keeps getting better. It's strange to play such a huge game with NO MAP and punishing deaths like it's 1993.
In Boletarian castle, there was a merchant behind some wooden barriers in a "safe zone"...I went back to visit him and he was gone...where did he go!? I want that short spear!

I played this game so much last year i would get cramps in my "trigger" fingers from using the block/attack so much with the left/right triggers. lol

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Sep 12,2011 12:23pm
Combat is so satisfying, I really hope other game-makers will copy it. I'm looking forward to skyrim but I know the combat will be a pale shadow and that will hurt it alot.

The one thing I would change drastically in this game is the weapon-upgrade system, it's really non-intuitive. I think that system is changing for Dark Souls (no more glowy gecko hunting?) I've run off of cliffs so many times trying to get those stupid things.

Dark Souls will be released in Japan, for the PlayStation 3 , on September 22, 2011, and for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, on October 4 in North America and on October 7 in Europe of the same year.

This comes out for ps3 AND xbox? Sucks for the people that own xbox and couldn't play demons souls. And I noticed bandai developed the game instead of Atlus. Things that make you go hmmm.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 3,2011 4:31pm
I think it's From that created both games, the others are just publishers.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Oct 3,2011 4:52pm
From software are the guys behind it, same developers as Tenchu. Bandai published the first game in Japan, but didn't release it anywhere else, because it was original IP and probably too hard for stupid Americans. Atlus took the chance and brought it to NA, which paid off, so Bandai USA nabbed this one too.

toggletoggle post by Randy_Marsh at Oct 3,2011 5:12pm
Demon souls needed more save points.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 3,2011 5:14pm
How do you mean? It saved everything you did

toggletoggle post by Randy_Marsh at Oct 3,2011 5:22pm
haha no. It needed to have more of them on the levels because they were so big and if you died at the boss you have to start from the beginning of the level. Save point before boss or terrorist.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 3,2011 5:28pm
Almost every level has shortcuts though, so once you open them you can skip most of the level.

In any case, Dark Souls is set up different- there's no Nexus anymore, just a large world, with campfires sprinkled throughout; those are the safe rest areas and where you respawn if you die. You can go back to one anytime to refresh all your health and heal potions but everything respawns when you do use one.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Oct 4,2011 11:05am
this game is getting extreme positive reviews. i am forcing myself not to blow cash on it at least until i beat the first one.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 4,2011 12:12pm
The first one is worth beating, it's just as bleak as you'd expect. It also has a couple endings but you not even realize what the trigger is.

I'm grabbing the new one later on today, I'll give some of the deets once I play it a bit.

I've been to Gamestop twice in 2 days, and both times, someone was in there looking for the collectors edition. Is it that special???

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 9,2011 2:54am
I think it has a bunch of art stuff in it. I dunno really. It's special because it was the same price as regular, at least up until release day.

So I've played around a bit, I'm really liking it. There are some changes from Demons Souls but it still feels just as good. I haven't read any faqs so I'm going in fresh, but here's what I've seen:

1. The level design is amazing and encourages exploration. There is no Nexus anymore, after the tutorial you get plunked in the middle of a city/ruin and you just go where ever you want from there. In the place of the Nexus are campfires, there you heal up and refresh spells, regain humanity, repair weapons, etc.

2. There are no healing herbs you can buy anymore, same with mana. You have a limited number (5) of heals you can use after resting at a campfire- same with spells, it's now D&D style where you have a set number of casts after resting. You can rest at any campfire you find, but when you do, EVERYTHING respawns (except bosses). So, that must be considered.

3. In this game you are undead. Once in a while you find humanity, which you can use to become human again. Being human has the advantage of increasing campfire effects (like more healing stored) and allows you to summon other players to help you, but it also means other players can invade your game to kill you. If you die, you lose your humanity. It's pretty rare to get, at least from what I've seen so far. World tendency is not in this game, it's replaced with the humanity system. Also, the more humanity you have stored, the more loot you find.

4. PvP has been greatly expanded; there are now Covenants, which are guilds of a sort, and some of these relate directly to pvp. If you get invaded and killed, you can put you killer in a "book of the guilty" that other players can use as a hitlist (there's a covenant whose job is specifically to hunt down invaders). There's more, but essentially it's an expanded system from what Demons Souls had.

5. Encumbrance is gone, you can now carry as much as you want. EQUIP encumbrance still exists though. Apparently if your dex or something is high enough you can do cartwheel and flips and shit.

6. Combat is very similar to DS, glad they didn't change what wasn't broken. You do have a few new moves like kicking, good for knocking enemies off ledges.

7. Bosses are still ridiculous. There are also minibosses scattered about, they don't respawn once killed though.

toggletoggle post by frankovhell at Oct 9,2011 12:12pm
I do so much that humanity is pretty much pointless to me.

SKyrim is a better game if you prefer exploring and looking at cool stuff. DS is better if you prefer gameplay, challenge and a dark atmosphere.

toggletoggle post by blessed offal nli at Oct 9,2011 6:41pm
rpgs with save points are a no no.

toggletoggle post by frankovhell at Oct 9,2011 7:30pm
dark souls saves continuously

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 18,2011 1:22pm
there's no save points really, everything you do is saved instantly. Which means don't kill an NPC you may need later- the game won't stop you from doing it, and you can't reload to go back in time.

Everytime I get to a new area I think is cruel, I manage to get past it and then find out the next area is even worse. I had to summon other players to help with the boss of Anor Londo, so hard.

Also, even though this fight is fairly easy, this monster design is the best.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 19,2011 5:53pm edited Oct 19,2011 5:54pm
If an area seems too tough, try somewhere else and come back to it later. If you're seeing skeletons or ghosts right out of the gate, I wouldn't go that way (although you CAN, which is the beauty of the game).

Also, one thing that's important that I don't recall if the game spells out, is equip burden. The lower percentage this is to max, the quicker you can run around and roll. 25% and 50% are noticable reductions in mobility, try taking off armor and rolling and you'll see what I mean. Some people prefer to wear little armor and just avoid getting hit, others like to get the biggest armor and shield they can and just block everything. Do whichever you prefer, both playstyles work.

is this game even possible to beat? maybe its not even worth buying if its gonna be that difficult and I LIKE difficult games but demon souls after the first boss fight got so fucking hard it became not fun anymore but was awesome before it got like that.

toggletoggle post by frankovhell at Oct 20,2011 2:01am
Demons's souls wasn't that hard really. If you have trouble just go online and read about how to beat the certain boss you are on, or summon a player to help you. They designed it that way on purpose.

toggletoggle post by frankovhell at Oct 20,2011 2:03am
So far I'm enjoying myself although Ive found out that lightning weapons are over powered and there are a few broken things regaurding the pvp. This saddens me and I really hope they patch them as the pvp in demon's souls was some of the better pvp I've had since well... ever...

Stuck at Capra Demon after giving up on the Hydra. There's like 10,000 of my souls beyond that white light. I'm still using the Drake Sword but I just found out that it doesn't scale with strength. I was wondering why it didn't look like leveling up had any effect. I haven't gotten any good weapon drops from big guys either. Pissing me off.

toggletoggle post by narkybark   at Oct 20,2011 2:32pm
oh Aril. You poopoo the game systems but the ones in the ElderScrolls games are a lot more basic, especially combat (and I'm not putting ES games down, I love them too for different reasons). This game nails the combat, exploration and fear vibes.

Frank, I hear you on the pvp, I've been playing around with it, I got over the fog ring but the new thing I hate is the Tranquil miracle combined with that shockwave thing. It's horrible. The only thing you can do is block the blast but then you're too slow to retaliate. Havent been able to figure out how to deal with it yet.

Martins, drake sword does not scale with anything, so yeah it's a great early game sword but you can make or find better. Smith a weapon you like up to +5, what you do from there depends on your build.

I finished DS recently, the ending sortof comes out of nowhere. Wasn't happy with the one I got, I liked the way Demon's ended a lot more.

I would still highly rate this game. The only things I thought were bad were the content for Covenants, and some aspects of PvP are easily abused. Other than that, it kept me engrossed the entire time, difficulty was just right.

I was stuck in the Undead Burg forever and put it down for a long time. I finally passed that plateau recently and am almost at Blighttown. I have done almost everything possible up to that point except right past the first bonfire in the Catacombs which is still too much to handle right now without a divine weapon.

I made the mistake of killing the old blacksmith in the Undead Parish. Help me out Damon. Did I need him for weapon ascension? The snooty bastard below the Firelink Shrine won't do it. There must be another blacksmith I can get to now??
