http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...ses-exist-alongside-discovered.html

There's more at the link, but here's a bit of it:

"Scientists say that they have found evidence that our universe was 'jostled' by other parallel universes in the distant past.

The incredible claim emerged after they studied patterns in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) – the after-effects of the Big Bang.

They say they may have found evidence that four circular patterns found in the CMB are 'cosmic bruises' where our universe has crashed into other universes at least four times."

Grain of salt grain of salt grain of salt grain of salt. Take it.

holy fuck. i like the writing about computers being "algorithmically deterministic" and can't reproduce human consciousness.

The omniverse theory holds true.

I was just watching the TNG episode "Parallels" the other day, a great look at the implications and interactions of parallel universes, so I was just thinking about this topic, weird.

will probably live longer too.

ONLY THE UNDERVERSE IS REAL.

It's been a proven fact since the Men In Black ending that the multiverse theory is real.

This is bullshit. The earth started with Adam & Eve eating apples and riding dinosaurs. The "Big Bang" is about as real as "tanks".

That's a great ep right there.

"he argues that known laws of physics are inadequate to explain the phenomenon of consciousness." well of course a physicist would enjoy mathematically expressing consciousness. but my limited comp sci background says it's impossible.

Godel's incompleteness theorem (math) when applied to the human mind as a system, basically says we can deduct a number of facts about the nature of consciousness, but cannot determine the nature of the system itself. or something like that. so, when you try to actually build a computer to mimic the human mind, you can make a number of projections and algorithms that reflect your PERCEPTION of how the mind works, but that's as close as you can get, the system itself will never be like the human mind.

from a less theoretical standpoint: the basic component of any computer is it's clock. this determines everything it does and the frequency in which it does it. but in the inner workings of our consciousness, time becomes meaningless, because it is just a tool we use to measure.

if you consider a cat to be essentially unconscious, because it responds to instincts and stimuli, and the special mammalian trait of remembering and recognizing danger and pleasure, rather than using logic, you could actually build a robot cat. you could make the argument that it's completely deterministic. human consciousness is more volatile and in a sense completely unpredictable, and while our unconscious directs and influences our newer consciousness, we have the power to deny it outright. you could use all the randomizing mechanisms you want in your "human computer" but it would never truly reflect consciousness.

it's an interesting subject though. penrose is a true genius, but there's no need to make a new field of physics to explain consciousness. just read jung.

right?! which was like 6000 years ago! how the fuck did god have time to make another universe? ooorrr maybe thats where he sent all the dinosaurs after man banished them from the earth? only the lord will know.

Our universe is an atom. Each atom within our universe is another universe.

i subscribe to this theory. kinda like that movie/Dr Suess book "Horton Hears a Who".

Does the theory send monthly newsletters? I need to get on that haha.

But yeah, same concept.

RIGHT! God obviously sent all the dinosaurs via time-warp to a parallel universe where they drive tanks and smoke pot with Jesus.

it's a great layman's primer on theoretical and quantum physics, and a damn good read. it's a short book and i guarantee it will change your outlook on some things in life. what you described is technically wrong, an atom is just that, an atom, he goes through all the types of particles that make it up, the wave-particle duality, matter and anti-matter, fundamental forces in the universe (gravitons, radiation, etc). he does touch on multiverses. but the "russian doll universes" idea doesn't have much weight, if there are other universes they exist outside our own with different laws of physics relating to the conditions of their formation/destruction and we probably have no way to perceive them.

i think he discusses the theory of multiple universes forming at once and the one we exist in sort of "overtook" the other ones. but someone hijacked my copy of the book. that asshole.

Will definitely look into this. It seems to me that an atom being just an atom assumes that we understand all the things that make up on atom. I don't believe that to be true. Granted, I'm no particle physicist but I think we have much to learn about the various particles that make up an atom.

And I bet these "collisions" they talk about really are just aliens playing marbles with said multiple universes. This all makes me think that movie was more realistic than some people believe.
