I've been getting asked questions about the vaccine, so I'll share what I know so far before the local news fucks up the story...

Last year’s combination of the H1N1 insanity in addition to the regular seasonal flu circulation created a great deal of confusion and unease. This year’s seasonal flu vaccine formulation provides protection against H1N1, influenza B, and influenza A/H3N2 viruses, so there is only one flu vaccine this year. Hospital employees and chronically ill patients will have access to the vaccine starting today in most areas, the general public soon after.

Steps to avoid the flu
-Get vaccinated early
-wash your hands with soap&water or use alcohol-based hand rub.
-sneeze into your elbow, not your hand
http://cdc.gov/flu/protect/preventing.htm

Symptoms
Common: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue
Less common: vomiting and diarrhea

Cold vs Flu? In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu, and are more likely to give you a runny or stuffy nose.

And although seemingly benign and lighthearted, don't high-five wren without asking if he's sick first. Wreningitis is no fun.

the flu frenzy is so ridiculous to me. vaccination IS NOT the answer. in fact it only makes things worse.

i've never gotten a flu shot. i usually don't get the flu but have a few times in my life.

@Yeti unless you have an allergy to eggs, help me understand how the flu vaccine makes things worse.

the US was left with something like 75% of the unused H1N1 shots last year because they were not needed and just dumped them in the trash instead. thank our wonderful goverment for bailing out Big Pharma on that one - im sure they need our money more than we do.

I get a flu shot every year so that I don't get sick. being sick is the worst.
plus, when you get the shot, they no longer need black helicopters to track you which really helps with the noise level.

Anal Flu is pretty bad. BOO anal flu!!

I take the red line to work. There isn't a vaccine on the planet that can keep me healthy through a winter of quincy center slobs coughing on the back of my neck.

Hence therefore I have not had a flu shot in like 3 years, and passed on the h1n1 obama mind control serum.

The only people who should get flu shots are people who are too lazy to wash their hands and eat fruits and vegetables.

a vaccine is used once to eradicate a disease, ie. Polio. the flu virus is constantly mutating, which is why you need to get it every year. vaccines against the flu just accelerate the mutations. there is no 100% guarantee that it will stop you from getting the flu, so all it's doing is making things worse. i understand that there are immuno-compromised people out there, and i'm not against them needing extra help, but for a young healthy person to get it is just dumb in my eyes. and how often do you get the flu? i've had it several times, but people make it sound like it happens 10 times a year so they desperately need a vaccine to lead a normal life. just take care of yourself, drink OJ, take a vitamin D supplement, and go about your normal life. if i get it, well that sucks, but it's not worth pumping my body full of chemicals just out of fear.

@yeti: you get the flu once a year and then can't get that flu again. the vaccine is just like getting that flu and not having to go through the flu itself.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Sep 20,2010 12:49pm
but you don't get the flu every year. it just seems so asinine to me.

toggletoggle post by Alx_Casket  at Sep 20,2010 12:54pm
@yeti the flu vaccine use is not the same as the problem with the overprescription of antibiotics. That overprescription, compounded with poor medication adherence (not completing the antibiotics cycle once you start feeling a little bit better), creates the superbugs that even our strongest antibiotics cannot treat. For those who don't know, antibiotics treat bacteria, but the flu is a virus, and mutates each flu season, not because of people getting flu shots.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Sep 20,2010 12:56pm
yeah the antibiotic use in this country is unbelievable. i rarely ever take them, even if they are prescribed.

I've never gotten a flu vaccine(at least to my knowledge?), and have never gotten the flu. I'm Superman, so all I've got to be afraid of are green rocks.

We have our first confirmed isolate of influenza (A) in a patient seen in the emergency room. If you have not received your influenza vaccination for this year, please do so before the virus becomes widespread. It is never too late to consider the use of influenza vaccine.
