Now, the truth. The State Department did buy bulk copies of a religious book, but it wasn’t Mere Christianity. Nope. It was the Ground Zero Imam’s, What's Right with Islam: A New Vision for Muslims and the West. Can you guess how many copies were bought? That would be none other than 2,000! The State Department also accepted another 1,000 at no cost, for a total dispersion of 3,000 copies of What’s Right with Islam.

My assertion was just based on thinking about it - the State Department is involved in cultural outreach to countless nations across the world at all different levels and in different ways. The idea that religious texts would be seen as a part of culture is not in and of itself incorrect or offensive, in the same way one might correctly argue that a historical library would be incomplete unless it had religious texts, as it is a part of culture and history. In most countries where religious populations are high, it could even be considered an essential part of outreach to gain trust and have the optimal chance of achieving objectives.

However, the idea that the State Department spends money on anything religious is nonetheless ABSOLUTELY a legitimate first Amendment issue in my opinion and so I agree with you and Hoser on that, I was just saying that it's not rational to assume it's a new practice of a State Department that has been very active in cultural outreach for decades.

My con law teacher was the biggest JOKE. He was this old, fat, white male who got the job because he knew somebody in the department. They put pressure on UCLA to get him his PhD, and then they ignored his total incompetence, many absences and some things that weren't quite right on his resume. I was so glad when I got out of that class, but they promoted him the next year, just because he knew somebody.

Damn, just read Glenn Greenwald's blog from the past 2 years!

Without bothering to look up links, here's a couple things I can remember off-hand:

As Senator:
- Voted to extend Patriot Act
- Voted to extend FISA and immunize telecoms from legal liability for their work helping the government spy on US citizens and their communications

Administration:
- Continues/expands government partnerships with "faith-based" organizations

- Refuses to release additional materials/photos showing proof of inhumane conditions is US military prisons overseas

- Declines to prosecute Bush officials on blatant crimes related to: torture, illegal detention/rendition, DoJ lawyer-firing-scandal, or any of the dozens of other areas of malfeasance visible to any casual observer

- Nominates Dawn Johnson to the position of Office Of Legal Counsel as a sop to the "left"; when Johnson is challenged in the Senate (most likely because she's advocated prosecuting Bush-admin officials), White House leaves her out to dry, without support in Congress or the press. On the other hand, Elena Kagan, who helped Bush administration deny rights to alleged terrorists as Solicitor General, gets full backing and support for her SCOTUS nomination

- Promotes Stanley McChrystal to head Afghan mission, despite McChrystal's ties to torture black-sites and the cover up of the "friendly fire" assassination of Pat Tillman

- Continues to allow torture at facilities like Bagram, as long as US personnel aren't directly involved

- Continues to treat Bagram (possibly other sites?) as the due-process-free-zone Guantanamo once was; alleged terrorists captured far away from Afghanistan are taken to Bagram, where they can be detained indefinitely without any review

- Numerous Guantanamo inmates have been cleared by military judicial panels but remain unreleased

- Obama himself publicly indicated he didn't give a shit about Miranda protections and seemed quite content when several months later, SCOTUS eviscerates this crucial part of modern due process, on the basis of intellectually bankrupt "ticking time bomb terrorist" logic. You won't see him scolding the court on this at next year's State Of The Union!

- Military uses SIGINT technology for law-enforcement purposes in tracking alleged Times Square Bomber on domestic territory, then disguises role

- Khalid Sheik Mohammed: no trial, no public appearances, no process... But be sure to remember that he is the self-proclaimed "Mastermind of 9/11", and be sure to forget that he'd been waterboarded dozens of times (possibly causing permanent brain damage) by the time he made this proclamation.

And of course, the most blatant sign of disdain shown by the Obama administration for basic civil liberties, the Constitution and due-process:

- The administration has claimed the right of the US (military or CIA) to assassinate any person anywhere in the world at any time, including US citizens, and regardless of proximity to the "battlefield". Independent groups trying to challenge this ridiculous assertion have been stymied at every turn, with the Treasury Dept. (not sure how they got involved) trying to force lawyers from the ACLU and CCR to get special licenses to advocate for a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist"!! WTF does the Treasury have to do with it?

Of course, this last bit is merely an extension of the permanent war state created by the Bush/Cheney regime and enshrined in the ongoing AUMF of 9/18/01, Public Law 107-40, which asserts the right of the President to use force against those "he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons". With the implementation of this law and the Patriot Act, due process, the bill of rights, and balance of powers between the branches of government was perhaps destroyed for good. Certainly until Obama works to reverse both of these crucial statutes, and the behavior listed above, it's pretty clear that he is an Enemy Of The Constitution.

Dude you know Glenn Greenwald has always HATED Obama, right? Just because he's on the left doesn't mean he gives Obama a fair shake; he's part of the Greenwald/Hamsher/Cenk Uygur alliance of people who despite being VERY progressive have displayed an almost obsessively irrational hatred with Obama, and get direct financial gain from repeating that message.

Greenwald committed to the premise that Obama was a far-right corporatist phony before the guy was even elected and has written column after column since then trying to justify that premise after the fact. He makes his living writing these articles for other people on the left who have already committed to a vehemently anti-Obama conclusion regarding not just his policies but the person and everything about him.

I suppose it's smarter than the Rush/Beck dreck on the right in that it comes from a MUCH smarter person, but the critiques are nonetheless selective omissive, unfair, and often vitriolic - and that's worth very little no matter where it comes from, and almost more insulting when it comes from someone purportedly smart enough to know better.

Oh ok, so if someone doesn't line up and lick the ass of corporatist neoliberal Democrats, they obviously have no idea what real progressivism looks like (i.e. something well to the right of the Nixon administration)... Obviously a bunch of dirty fucking hippies without the requisite seriousness to be considered realistic or relevant to any political discussion!

Maybe Greenwald (despite the fact that he obnoxiously advocated voting for Obama as the lesser of available evils up until the election) committed to the premise that Obama is an authoritarian and a corporatist because, well... He is!

Sotomayer seems to have been acceptable, and the Lily Ledbetter law was a no brainer. Past that I can't see one single "progressive" action the administration has taken (empty gestures like promising to close Gitmo/end torture don't count, nor does requiring people under penalty of law to subsidize the for-profit health insurance industry).
