I know this statement will be met with much debate, and anger... but here goes:

I think there is an obvious reason that the metal scene is mostly populated by dudes. It's testosterone. MOST women hear the noise, and the screaming and they're totally turned off. They don't get it, because chemically, they shouldn't.. seeing as most of it thrives on anger, rage, hate etc.. which happen to be emotions that are driven by the chemical testosterone.

I know that this isn't always true, i've SOME women that were totally into metal, and were well adjusted. I've just only met a couple of them.

exactly. i know PLENTY of real girls, and theyre great. but generally speaking, its 90% men into metal. its kinda like how when you say to a girl that men are stronger than women, because biologically WE ARE. obviously theres exeptions, but we're not saying this to be sexist, its just true.

I think that's less realistic a statistic than it is a building frustration that there aren't more metal chicks, because really - who wouldn't want more? I'd say on average maybe there are less female fans but the ratio is a lot closer than first meets the eye when it comes listening to the music; live is a different story, on average female fans are noticably less likely to go to shows, especially when it comes to popping up at a random local show, but I think this has more to do with metal being very individualistic in spirit (you don't have to call up a bunch of friends to go to a concert, you can just go, and most women are generally less likely to go to a concert without at least one friend to shoot the shit with). Of course, it depends on the type of metal and the particular band, too, when it comes to the guy vs. girl ratio in the audience.




When it comes to upper body strength you are one-hundred percent right, I'm skinny as a rail but I could overpower most women in an arm-wrestling match. The thing is, lower body strength is different, women can have deceptively strong legs and have a naturally lower center of gravity, so the whole idea of one gender physically stronger than the other isn't exactly right in either direction. Women who are unable to defend themselves effectively against a guy usually screw themselves by flailing their arms wildly, when a one-to-one test of upper body strength is the area they're guaranteed to fail at.
