The Pats will not take Sergio Kindle. I'm putting that out there right now. He's Vernon Gholston part 2: big on athletics small on football skills. I think word is finally out on the dude, and a lot of the mocks I've seen lately have him going in the 2nd. There are just way too many players with more polished skill sets available at 22 for the Pats to take him there.
Gronkowski with the 44th overall? When the hell did tight end become this must have position for everyone? I realize the Pats really need a tight end, and I realize they drafted high on Ben Watson. But for Christs sake, neither Gronkowski or Gresham played a single down in 2009 and neither one of them could block to save their life when they were playing. WR is a bigger need at 44, IMO.
I like McCluster as a 3rd down Kevin Faulk type of player, but I think there are too many needs to address in the first 4 picks to take a running back. If they took him at 47 or 53 I wouldn't complain, but I think he's going off the board early in the 2nd because of the great pro day he had. Then whoever drafts him can remember that he's the size of Martin Gramatica.
Jerry Hughes available at 53? Only Fox Sports would come up with that projection.
But for the sake of saying something productive instead of proving Fox Sports wrong (like THAT's ever been a challenge) I'll list a tentative top 4
22. Jared Odrick DT Penn State
44. Damian Williams WR USC
47. Jason Worilds OLB Virginia Tech / or Kareem Jackson CB Alabama or if you really want a running back take Javid Best who may still be on the board.
53. TYSON ALUALU DT/DE Cal (I'm huge on this guy) or Alex Carrington DE (could be a true 3-4 DE) Arizona State
Alualu or Carrington is a win win either way. They're both great candidates to put some mean back in the D-Line. I'm perfectly fine with sitting until the 4th to take a TE and getting a guy like Tony Moeaki from Iowa, and not another 1 dimensional Ben Watson clone.
The stupidest mock I've seen yet had the Patriots trading up to the #8 spot to take Rolondo McClain. Actually that's tied with every mock that has the Pats taking Tim Tebow.

THANK YOU! dude's soft as shit...once he's blocked, he's out of the play...has fantastic speed, but once someone puts a hand on him, he disappears
Brandon Graham has grown on me by leaps and bounds, but he's grown on the analysts too, meaning he probably won't be at #22
Damian Williams is the guy I want the most...I'll be disappointed if the Pats pass on him
other guys I'm big on: Ryan Mathews (although I doubt they take him), Jared Odrick, Golden Tate, Alex Carrington, Tyson Alualu, Sean Weatherspoon (other guy that's probably gone by #22, and he's more of an ILB in a 3-4), Thaddeus Gibson, Jerry Hughes, Demaryius Thomas (who will fall because Georgia Tech had an option offense meaning he is not a polished guy at all), Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (projected 3rd round guy, and at the moment, they don't have a 3rd round pick)
other guys I would avoid like the plague like Kindle: Carlos Dunlap, Jason Pierre-Paul, Everson Griffen, TIM TEBOW, Anthony Davis, Arrelious Benn (the next coming of Braylon Edwards)

THANK YOU! I blame sports talk radio for putting that friggin idea in people's heads. All the time Tebow has spend out here with the Pats is nothing but a smokescreen for Bill's homie Urban Mayers.
I like Hughes but yeah, the dude ain't gonna drop THAT far down. Jared Odrick is the one I think they'll take first if he falls to #22 A lot of drafts have them taking Jermain Gresham but I don't think they'll go that high for a TE again. To me, that's why a guy like Gronkwski or Arron Hernendez late in the second wouldn't be the craziest idea. Although if the Pats think they can find a fitting sleeper TE in the later rounds, Mike, I'd agree and say focus on LB, DE and WR and that's it!
The more I watch footage of Brandon Graham, and the more I watch footage of the other pass rush specialists at the top of the draft the more I get nervous that the Pats will miss out on Graham and end up with Ricky Sapp.
Graham is head and shoulders above just about every pass rush prospect in the draft, and the guy tackles like a freight train. I'd take him over Odrick even if he falls that far in the 1st. My only concern is that he played more of a 5 technique end at Michigan and everyone seems convinced he can just make the move to OLB in a 3-4... when no one has ever seen him cover anybody.
Corny radio promo voice: "You're tuned in to 98.5 with Mike and Rusty R-R-R-R-RUSSSSTYYY and M-M-M-MIIIIKE on the one and only Sports Hub 98.5 FM BOSSSTOOONNNN"
I highly doubt Dez Bryant falls beyond the Seahawks' second 1st rounder @ #14....but I'm not gonna lie, I would be very happy being able to take him at #22, even if he is a "diva"
this just in: 98.5 the sports hub fires felger and maz and replaces them with "Football Riffs," hosted by xmikex and rustyPS.
LOVE IT
The music clips won't suck, that's for sure. More worthwhile information, more lulz, mores riffs and less asskissery/total lack of pop culture references.
"What is that? I don't get it! B-Real! What's going on?!"
I haven't been following Bryant a ton only because I didn't really think the Pats would be looking at him. But the guy is the real deal, and from what I understand a lot of his "character concerns" have been really vague. And nothing he's done thus far has been on par with the Crabtree spectacle from last year.
well the reason he got suspended by the NCAA was because he lied to them about his relationship with Deion Sanders, even though the reality of it was it was nothing more than Sanders mentoring the guy...NCAA was investigating Sanders being his agent while still being in college
considering the Jets draft history, coupled with Holmes being out for the first month of the season, LT being a glorified goal line back, and Cromartie's lack of being able to spell his own name.....I'm not
they may have made all these moves, but look at the Redskins, they make crazy moves almost every offseason and where does that get them?
just saying the east isn't really a crazy overpowering division like it's made out to be. the jets are the only team that scares me in there. dolphins and bills are a joke, pats havent made any big moves yet so yuh jets look scary so far khed.
I will agree that the Jets are the only other East team that's formidable....but people need to relax
this is a different offseason than we're all used to seeing....after the draft, teams are gonna start cleaning house to make sure that they comply with whatever is decided on under the new CBA...when that happens, I expect the Pats to make some major moves

NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! BRADY IS DONE!! SIGN JEFF GEORGE NAO!!!!!!! DARIUS BUTLER DIDN'T MAKE THE PRO BOWL IN HIS ROOKIE SEASON!! HE'S A BUSST!!! TRADE HIM FOR A 7TH ROUND PICK AND SIGN TYRONE POOLE!!!!
i want them to get him and sign dexter mccleon so fans will be confused and brady can pick on mccleon every day in practice and make him relive the rams' super bowl loss over and over again.

that's a spot-on impersonation of all the dumb sports fans in the northeast. it could pretty much be any sports fan in boston, ny, or philly (if you switch out the players for ny or philly players).

Chad Henne still sucks, but here's what should worry the rest of the AFC East...
Johnathan Wilhite, Cromartie, Revis, Shaun Springs, Most of the Bills secondary... none of those guys can tackle worth shiiiiiiiiiiiit. If Henne can get the ball to Marshall even on a check route matched up against the right guys that's an extra 20 in YAC right there.
Look at the top 10 guys in yards after the catch in 2009 and notice how many of them are WR's. There are only 2 WR's in the top 5 and Marshall is one of them. The guy has the ability to turn into Jim Brown in the open field when dudes start trying to shoulder check him.
I'd like to say he's a crappy fit for the run-first homo wildcat offense the Dolphins use, but it's tough to say. They haven't had a real receiver in forever. They could be really dangerous... for about 4 weeks and then Ronnie Brown will be hurt, Ricky Williams will be hurt, Pat White will still manage 8 snaps for the whole season, and whatever team picks up Joey Porter will have to deal with him giving Chad Henne a concussion.
There's an unsupported rumor on the PFT comments claiming that the Pats have exchanged ideas with the 49ers about moving up to the 13th pick in exchange for the 22nd and a 2nd rounder.
People are already making the Galloway comparisons. When the Pats picked up Stonehands he was coming off a 9 game 15 reception season. Holt isn't a starting WR anymore but he's coming off a productive 15 game 722 yard season in Jacksonville of all places. He's a football player, and a character guy who never quit on any of the shitty teams he played for.
I originally didn't plan on profiling a ton of WRs simply because I thought a couple of them would be off the board by 44. But Miami is out of the WR game, and so is Baltimore. So the run on the position presumably starts later, and the whole thing shifts. Golden Tate definitely belongs in the blog though, and Thomas too.
From what I've been reading about Best is that he's still kind of messed up (physically and mentally) from the concussion.
LaFell has talented hands, but he couldn't outrun Conan O'Brien. He's knocked himself out of 1st round consideration though and is a potential value pickup later.
I didn't know that about Best...I was watching vids of him and was like "how is he not a 1st rounder?" ....that would explain why
and yes, LaFell isn't the fastest, but I think his ability to work zones, along with the fact that he isn't afraid to block/get physical makes him a very good prospect
I added Tate to the blog. I'll add Best, Thomas, and a few more I have in mind after the draft boards reset. Neither of them are going in the first round.
And I'll also go on record saying that if we're trading up for anyone it should be Derrick Morgan.
you really think Morgan fits the Pats' defense? cause I don't know if I do....I'm not knocking him cause he's definitely a great player, but I don't know

hoping. 6 hours till draft. Pats have predicting they'll be picking around 9:30. Belichick, deliver us from evil.
Bradford to the rams. This kid is going to get killed in st. louis. No line protection. A mediocre defense meaning they'll be throwing the ball constantly. They had to do it, but I see this kid struggling a lot and losing confidence.
I'm really curious as to exactly what the Browns offered for the #1 spot considering the rumor is they offered "most of their picks." If the Browns were coughing a first a second and more then honestly the Rams deserve to lose for another year. Marc Bulger is a pussy, but O line is their absolute biggest need, and neither Bradford or Jackson will do anything but goto the emergency room with their current depth chart.
Fuck yeah to the Lions landing Suh and bringing them 1 step closer to turning that team around.
lol I actually said out loud "what the fuck? SILVERBACK?!" when he said that.
Rusty, whats your facebook?
Also, the Rev will never support anything involving organized sports so we're lucky this hasn't been changed into a dildo appreciation thread.

Who was the centerpiece of the Pioli era Pats defense? #37. You could say that's its an un-Pioli move taking a safety so high, but he knows that the kind of defense he wants to see out there starts with a safety that can make people afraid. Very nice pick for the Chiefs.
the Bills just made the dumbest pick ever....they have holes at the 3 most important positions on the field and they pick a RB when they have Lynch and Jackson already
Mike, your boy Tyson just got snatched. Jacksonville, reach much???
I think Alualu is gonna be a great player....but that's a HUGE reach
I completely 100% agree. He's a solid player who plays with a ton of heart. But 10th overall? 2nd time in the last 3 years they're reached on a DE and their defense still hasn't recovered from losing Marcus Stroud.
Chargers don't pick again until 91. Meanwhile the Eagles trade 2 third rounders to get into the 13th spot to get Brandon Graham. What the fuck is going on here?
This is a seriously weird draft. Sucks Graham is gone, but what is with these teams trading so much to move up? This only makes me wonder if Bill is in the bunker thinking of new ways to screw teams in light of these latest deals.

He will make out with Eva Braun then shoot himself.

I know I'm late to the party, but the bills are retarded. That's what you get when you hire buddy nix as your gm. Wouldn't clausen have been the logical pick?
They drafted a center in the 1st round. That is LOL. He will snap the ball to their non existent rapey QB.
It was a literal statement also. Did you see the size of the bling on that guy's neck? He's loving that Steelers money just to make payments on that thing.
The Pats finally have a corner who can play man, and a return guy. The corner back depth chart is absolutely awful beyond their Darius Butler (and I do not count Shaun Springs as above Butler). I didn't believe in Kindle and I didn't believe in Kyle Wilson. I don't love this pick but I don't hate it.
a buddy made a good point: the Pats passing on Odrick knowing the Phins are waiting in the wings behind them means that there is obviously something Belichick does not like about odrick

and belichick was right about Chad Jackson and Maroney too.

Detroit gave up a lot. For moving up 4 slots, Best wouldve still been there. They lose out on their 2nd, 4th and a later pick. They should have just waited or taken kindle.
I'm kinda in shock right now....this draft was a mindfuck
post by SkinSandwich at Apr 22,2010 11:10pm edited Apr 22,2010 11:10pm
I am sure the 2nd round tomorrow night will make a bit more sense. Nah, it won't. Pats will get Kindle which doesn't make sense either, so it will happen.
Say this about Devin McCourty, he has good change of direction skills. He was in bathroom during pick, but managed to bolt out and get phone
I actually was especially impressed with McCourty at the combine. I had actually put down some notes on his explosiveness and great body control... I just didn't think he'd go in the first. Apparently he and Belichick watched film together at Rutgers too.
the more I think about this pick, the more I'm disappointed....Odrick is sitting right there at 27 with the Dolphins waiting for you to pass on him and you do for a guy from what I've seen is nothing more than a great returner and special teamer ala Ellis Hobbs meets Matt Slater? all the while you give up on Dez Bryant twice?
I will scratch my head until I reach my brain over this one
and this is making me want Damian Williams that much more...he is perfect for this offense, and if they pass on him, I might show up to Gillette Stadium high on anger and liquor with a gun ala Bad Boys 2
while I'm still bumming about this pick, Tim Graham from ESPNBoston.com raises an excellent point:
"Why the Patriots took him: You never can have enough cornerbacks, and the AFC East is turning into an aerial division. The New York Jets will field an offense that features Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Jerricho Cotchery. The Miami Dolphins recently added Brandon Marshall."
....but still, Wilson is seemingly the better talent and HE was sitting there too
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he was prepared to select Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty with the 22nd overall pick, but the team traded back with the thinking that they could get him at 27 and receive a mid-round draft choice.
“At the end of the round there, things came out about as well as we could have hoped for,” he said.
I'm surprised the browns took a DB instead of Clausen as well. Holmgren likes to breed his own QB and this team needs one badly. As well as some WR help. And RB. And O-line. They just suck.
Kindle's a Raven. Now we gotta see if he makes Mike's overrrated list and/or if the rumors about medical problems are true.
Kindle must have performed great in the "Commit a flagrant personal foul and then complain the referees don't like you" drills in the combine for the Ravens to like him so much.
that's why you all should be watching the bruins/celts/sox right now.
face it, the patriots will be .500 this year at best. The jets will seal the deal and be on top in the east.
Skinsandwich needs to be sitting there with Mel Kiper and Jon Gruden showing them who the real sonofabitch is.
I booed the Spikes pick at first because I wanted Williams. But think about it. They re-sign Wilfork, and then draft 2 3-4 linebackers inside and outside. I think that means Belichick is feeling more confident that he can get back to doing what he knows how to do on defense. All of a sudden the Patriots are a linebacker oriented team again. Spikes was in the top 20 consideration before he ran a 2 hour 40. He's a fiery player, and a huge hitter. Mayo, Spikes, Cunningham, TBC, Adalius Thomas, Tyrone McKenzie, Gary Guyton. There's a lot of potential there.
I know zero about Taylor Price beyond him being really goddamn fast, and he's supposed to be a solid route runner.
3 observations:
1) whoever was his QB at Ohio should be pumping gas for a living when he graduates....Price was targeted 12 times in the game, only caught 4, but as you'll see in the video, every other target was a horrible throw
2) he appears to have very good hands and can take a hit
3) he blows up Eric Berry way downfield on a YAC catch by another WR, has no fear blocking LBs and DEs, and does a great job at it
I coveted Damian Williams, and I think they should've taken him over Spikes and maybe Cunningham (because they were both taken pretty high), but this guy looks like he can be something
Whenever I read a scouting report about somebody's route running ability I'm kind of like "yeah yeah yeah, some scout is being overly critical." But this guy finds the seams and angles nicely. After watching this guy's blocking abilities, the Spikes pick, the Gronkowski pick I think it's indicative of something I've been saying all along that the Pats needed to get more physical and addressing that was one of their highest overall concerns in this draft. I think they've done that so far.
And they didn't draft anybody with a goddamn knee injury.
the Pats have a LOT of weapons now: Moss, Edelman, Holt, Price, Gronkowski, Hernandez....and from what I hear Brandon Tate has been doing the offseason program all along with no signs of a lingering injury
Jason Campbell to the Raiders. Leon Washington and Lendale White to the seahawks. Kirk Morrison to the Jags. Holy fucking trades batman!
post by Dankill at Apr 24,2010 4:22pm
Just got home from work. I like the Hernendez trade and Zoltan was who they were targeting the whole time for Punter. Question: Alan Fanica? Take or leave?
1. Kirk Morrison to the Jags is a great move for a team that was on the verge of trading John Henderson. They still don't have a real quarterback or an offensive line, or any fan interest. But their rushing yards allowed will certainly drop... great. I don't lament him not going to the Pats because we're stacked at inside linebacker right now.
2. I was a bit perturbed that we took a Punter in the 5th with a lot of good project corners still on the board. But Hanson is a pussy is was never consistent. Mesko averaged 45+ yards per punt at Michigan. It was a big weakness of the Pats that is now addressed.
3. Leon Washington for a 5th rounder is craziest trade since Randy Moss for a 4th. Unless Rex Ryan has info that Washington's knee is fucked up still, he's an absolute moron for turning his back on BOTH his best running backs now. Shonn Greene sucks, and Ryan is only out to prove that he can run his system with his guys not Manginis.
4. Releasing Faneca because he wouldn't take a paycut IN AN UNCAPPED YEAR is ridiculous. The same year that the Pats get meaner on their front 7 the Jets get weaker at offensive line. Works for me.
5. Hernandez is an interesting pick. He's a purely pass catching TE but fits in instantly now as a rotational #2 TE. Both Gronkowski and Hernandez have Crumpler to learn from too. Don't expect him to help out at all with the running game though.
6. So are the Patriots primed to win the SEC championship or what? 3 Florida players in the same draft? Why not just bring in Urban Meyer to be the OC? He meets my #1 overall qualification of NOT being Bill O'Brien.
7. I'd be interested to see if Belichick tries moving Gary Guyton to the outside. He's great in coverage and is the fastest LB on the team. That way you don't take any playing time away from McKenzie and Spikes in the middle. The fact that they drafted a true blue 3-4 middle linebacker in Spikes suggests to me that they actually are going to reinforce the 3-4 again and maybe move Mike Wright to DE as a stop gap solution until the 2011 draft in which we have 4 of the top 64 picks.
Looking at the Pats schedule, barring upsets, they could, at the most go 12-4. You know though, I am honestly SICK of the Patriots playing the Colts every fucking year. I know there is a bit of a rivalry, but enough already. Honestly, the rivalry is not what it used to be.
its actually because of how they both finish each year
you play your division rivals twice each, one game each against teams in one AFC conference that rotates each year, and one game each against teams in one NFC conference that rotates each year, which is 14 games...to make up the other two, you play the corresponding team in the other divisions in your conference according to where you both finish the year before
so the Pats may not play the AFC North every year but because the Pats and Colts finish in the same spot in their respective divisions every year, they play every year
