I know NOTHING about computers, except how to delete a system32 folder (which I have already done, and it wasn't the brightest idea). However, I'm trying to install more RAM as I only have 512 MB right now, and being that it is 3-4 years old, it's starting to work slowly. I want to install 4gb. It doesn't seem that hard (thanks youtube), however, I can't find just one 4gb "stick". All they sell is 2-2gb "sticks" in one package. Is that the same thing as one 4gb "stick"? And what is the difference between DDR, DDR2, DDR3? How do I know what my computer supports?

DDR is just the name of a class of ram. It has something to do with the timing and process transfer rates and other things that would bore even me to talk about. Anyways with your current set-up you would need to buy DDR class ram. 2x2 GB sticks is the same as one 4 GB stick. lolmath. You can also buy 4x1 GB sticks.

p4? throw it out. 4GB, you will need a 64-bit Os or only 3.2-3.5 will be usable.

also, remiroc might be wrong. open your tower and see how many ram slots you have. with that PC, over 2GB is a waste. i have that 3GHz version of that at my work.

rev is right though 4 would be a waste with the OS you have. best to just get 2 GBs or completely upgrade your mobo, cpu and OS.

unless you are putting win7 on this, it wont use more than 2gb and if it did, windows xp would used more hd caching so you would get slowed down after 2.1gb anyhow.

i wouldnt waste the money on this rig. you can pick up a dual core computer with ddr2 ram (which is cheaper) for like 300 bucks. look around. i picked up a comp with a quad core phenom processor, 4 gigs of ddr2 ram (upgradable to 8), and 600 gig hard drive for 500 bucks a year ago. should be cheaper now. look around.

you are gonna spend over 100 bucks for the ram you want. thats 1/3 the price of a new WAY FASTER computer.

also my comp came with an hdmi port on the back so you can hook that shit up to your giant tv and watch downloaded movies or play wow on like 52" of screen real estate. shit is SICK.

these are all applications that i would need running on linux before i could switch to linux. linux is great for servers and embedded ssystems. thats about it.

you cant use them with wine? it runs almost anything now-a-days.

Cool Edit is a great, easy to use bedroom one man band recording program. Although on this new desktop there is a slight lag in the monitoring of what i am recording, so i just mute it and I'm fine.

what you could do, is go to crucial then just put in your system info and they'd tell you what type of ram and how much your machine can support then you can either buy ram from them or use the information to go to new egg or something.

gimp is the shittiest program I have ever use in my entire life.

I did try vuescan with one of the holders. It took me hours to get anything out of it and what I got wasn't any good.

if Pidgin could connect to the exchange server at work, I wouldn't be able to use any of the phone system that we use and most of the multimedia stuff we use every day.

G.I.M.P. doesn't do a single thing that lightroom does. and I meant lightroom 2.
G.I.M.P. also doesn't support any of the RAW files that any of my camera use unless I process them in another program which takes any any reason for taking the pictures in raw.

audacity does about 1/10 of what audition does and with a much worse interface.

Inkscape seems to be the only applicaton that in any way shape or form comes close to what I would need.

Pycxx isn't for C#, it's for python.

so far, I've gotten about 1/1000 useablity here from these applications compared to what I usually have. Not to mention all the jumping through hoops to get that 1/1000.

I do write most of my code in java/php with all my enviroments other than c# caring about the OS.

Well we both have different wants and needs. For example, I think it's easier to do color separations in GIMP than in photoshop for screen printing, layouts, etc, but I'm not a photo/camera guy.

Ardour is would be preferable over audacity and has good support for a lot of fire-wire devices.

Like I said Linux dose not cover everything out there in the specialized software world, but for the average user who just wants to get online, burn CDs, email, do office stuff, and be entertained, I don't see a reason to spend $$$ on Windows or a Mac unless you have to.

And for anyone who wants to try Linux, most of the ISO's have a live CD feature where you can try Linux without installing to your hard drive. It's a pretty groovy feature.

part of my job is making live CDs. I also disagree with your statement. even with the latest ubuntu, something is always not right with the hardware support. then you go and get a new webcam and there a no drivers available.

I have all these programs already and use them every day. This is about ethan thinking linux can do it when it can't.
