New speakers and possibly even subs in time for this show? It's more likely than you think.

toggletoggle post by sixstringcarnage   at Mar 18,2010 2:37pm
Anyone know of recording audio at this venue. I'm sure youd have to pay, if there was.. Awesome sound equipment and subs would be sessh to record...

toggletoggle post by Sacreligion at Mar 18,2010 2:40pm
It's a little trickier because the guitars typically aren't mic'ed.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Mar 18,2010 2:41pm
i could talk to eric at rogue mobile. he did the recording for the Revo cd release at Church

toggletoggle post by Sacreligion at Mar 18,2010 2:44pm
That dude from 18 Wheels recorded that Brutalfest show with a couple mics at the back of the room. I can get in touch with him and see if he wants to come down for the show. Those recordings came out alright, but the PA was in rough shape. Coupled with new equipment I figure it would sound a lot better.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Mar 18,2010 2:51pm
mike - dont confirm anything yet and we'll compare rates from both dudes to see what would work best

toggletoggle post by Sacreligion at Mar 18,2010 3:14pm
I think the dude was fairly cheap. Didn't charge to set up and was selling the cds to bands for like 20 bucks or something right? They did play the show and he was already there though...

A mixer recording at that place is harder to pull off and that dude Eric would probably have to bring extra equipment.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 18,2010 3:36pm
i could bring our digital 8track (the one we used tom) and do a set of sterio tracks from the board, and set up mics for everthing else. I mic all the stuff pretty quick, and just record every track kinda low so nothing peeks and then mix afterwards.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Mar 18,2010 3:37pm
that sounds pretty rad

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 18,2010 3:38pm
pretty easy too... on the other hand, Elliot just got his new mac (w/protools) and we could mic stuff pretty quick.. then elliot could mix in his studio, probably pretty cheap... but that might be more work than it's worth.

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Mar 18,2010 3:39pm
I can set up a whole recording rig for this show if you want. Straight to disk. I would need persuasion to do so.

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Mar 18,2010 3:40pm
I have 16 track capability, laptop and knowledge.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 18,2010 3:40pm
define "persuasion"

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Mar 18,2010 3:45pm
Would not be easy nor quick. Would require much work. I would do it for a flat fee for the entire day. Would take it back to the studio, remove any bad frequencies/get levels right/master it etc.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 18,2010 3:45pm
ok... define flat fee.

toggletoggle post by Slag NLI at Mar 18,2010 3:45pm
Somewhere between $100/200 if that sounds fair.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Mar 18,2010 3:48pm
probably not. I mean, sure, it sounds fair. IF a live recording of this show would be worth that much... but i don't think at least MY band would want to pay enough to do that. I'd probably just bring my digi8.

And like i said, it does sound fair, but i don't think the bands playing this show want to foot that bill.

i'm not really sure, i seem to remember Sullivan saying something about it being mono, but i guess they are getting a bunch of new equipment in the upcoming weeks so there might be some drastic changes.

We could run dual outs into the snake and run a pan on the mixer with what we've got right now, but we should have new speakers and rackmount gear set up in time for this show.

The problem I see here is that the background is light, and now the font is light, so it's light on light, hence the contrast isn't working to help the legibility.

hmmmm PA system issues at this club? more likely than you think.

sacreligionmike, running dual outs to the snake and panning the mixer left and right [the right way to hookup a stereo device using individual channels BTW] wont work if your main output is in mono or if your main amp is bridged.

Slag, most small (non plug and play) PA systems are run in mono, get over it.

Also I'm guessing the person who runs the london billiards/club oasis website is the dude from dirtnap....not that it actually matters since it's impossible to find....but he only lists the dirtnap booked shows on the clubs website. this show is not listed.

the more I check out this venue the more i realize how awesome it could be......and how terrible it is. lulz.

this show will rule though. and more shows like it can only help.

I wish more was in my hands in terms of the club area. If I had it my way that PA would have been fixed up 6 months ago but I sure as shit don't have the money myself to invest into it and there's no way to get the owner to even properly fix the bathrooms let alone put another couple G's into that back room.

I'm not trying to be a cunttwatbrat, but my music honestly depends on the stereo soundfield. There is no depth to ambient/electronic music if played in mono. I will be bringing my own PA unless we can verify that the OASIS is not bridged/mono. If he can pan the mixer and it actually pans in the club, that tells me it is not bridged. It has been awhile since I have been there, so I cannot remember.

The thread has to be labeled as a show, and then at the top of the thread there's an option to associate it with a date on the events page.

I'm gonna talk to Tam or Uma about getting there early for this show. The club normally opens at 6 or a lil later and I'm sure bands will want to load in early and people will want the bar to be ready to go when they arrive.

I'm happy to report that we WILL be playing this, there was serious doubt until just a few days ago as to whether we would even be available to play on this date (Laurel will be in California that week, unfortunately), but Casey and I are now planning a special set as a two piece, featuring instrumental metal (everything from The Call of Ktulu to Into the Lungs of Hell to original improvs) as well as some songs by Type O Negative to honor Pete Steele's passing.

That would be cool, I can hit the Pete Steele lows pretty well, so I can reasonably pull off those three Type O songs, but I can't do Pete's more full-range/heavier vocals for shit, so it would be wicked cool if we also had you come up for a Type O song with more oomph in the vocals to close out our set - anything in mind? I Don't Wanna Be Me? Blood and Fire? List anything you think might be cool...

Also, on the same topic, another idea Casey was throwing around was that we have you come up and sing Armageddon with us as the original song in our set.

Either or both of these would be cool with me.

Hey Tom, is our set still flexible enough that we can push it to an hour or is it now a strict 45 minutes as listed above? I'm looking at our list of songs above, and it's definitely closer to an hour, especially if we add an extra Type O song with Tony on vocals which I'd like us to do. (Although Casey is leaning towards us not doing a second Metallica instrumental in our set anyway, just to avoid a sense overkill, so that may solve itself by axing ten minutes). Either way, just let me know and we'll be prepared.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 21,2010 10:44am
I can bring my real time cd burner to the gig, if someone can put a L/R RCA connection into it, we can do a recording. I'll supply cds too, the only issue would be capturing the things that we're not mic'ing for the board, like most of the drums/guitar/bass. Although, we could do a board input, and a room mic from on stage to capture that stuff. I dunno, i'll bring my stuff and we'll see how it works out.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Apr 21,2010 10:45am

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 21,2010 10:59am
Well for acoustic stuff sure, but for the louder stuff, usually the guitar/bass amps are loud enough so that only the signer and bass drum need be mic'd. For you guys though, since you're doing the more minimalist thing, you'd probably mic it all.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Apr 21,2010 11:09am
Cool, OK, that would be ideal.

Thanks for offering to bring your recording gear to the gig, always a good thing to have a CD afterwards.

toggletoggle post by josh_hates_you  at Apr 21,2010 12:00pm
i talked to tom about maybe recording this at one point. he said i could if i wanted to. if you guys REALLY want it recorded i could be convinced to do it. i just need time to set up. can't do it at 6.

24 track hard disk recorder
16 channel mackie mixer
plenty of drum and instrument mics + cables
i'd have to split signals somewhere to feed vox and kick to the house

this computer is shitty, outdated and doesnt have any editing programs. so i'd either give you the .wav files (easier said than done) to do what you want with and edit/mix yourself or mix it down to 2 track off the board with some minor outboard effects, eq and compression

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 21,2010 12:02pm
I know we'd love it to be done, although it's up to tom whether or not there'd be time to get it done. I dunno if the set up/break down for all the mics for everyband would take to long.

toggletoggle post by FuckIsMySignature at Apr 21,2010 12:03pm
i could push up the start time of the bands to 630 but i dont really want to go later than that. i'll try to confirm with mike about getting in there for 5 to set shit up in advance.

toggletoggle post by josh_hates_you  at Apr 21,2010 12:06pm
since the levels are going to tape rather than the house i dont have to be too fussy about levels. as long as they dont clip i can adjust them later when mixing. once all the mics are set up its just a matter of putting them in front of cabs and clipping onto drums for every band.

i'd have to do some ghetto micing if someone has 4 toms or double bass.

Opening early won't be a problem. If there's someone who doesn't mind setting up the recording stuff all night then they can go right ahead and do it. We'd have to do what Josh said though and split the signal of the kick and vox so we don't overload the mains and make them sound like mud balls.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Apr 21,2010 5:37pm
Hey Mike, do you know if there are any effects available on the PA? (reverb, etc)

toggletoggle post by Sacreligion at Apr 22,2010 4:10am
Yes. A wide range of things, most of which sound kind of cheesy but the reverb and delays are fine. As far as mic'ing guitars, we have the mics and the channels and the capabilities if need be, but if you're bringing a half-stack chances are that it will stand in the room on its own, allowing the mains to have more room to produce the vox and kick. It's bare bones but works fine if you're not trying to play your amps at 10. Snare and toms cut through alright. The main problem with the room is the wash between a tinny guitar tone and the cymbals. Hooray for mirrors everywhere on the ceiling.

If this is going to end up being a huge production with the recording and criss-crossing of PA equipment I may even ask them to open at 4...maybe not for business but to at least allow ample time to set up everything.

toggletoggle post by Sacreligion at Apr 22,2010 4:15am
Also, now that I think about it our kick mic is gone all haywire and not reliable enough to last through a show this long. If anyone that's coming has one that we could use for the evening I would be much obliged to smoke copious amounts of doobage with you.

If not, I have a good sounding kick drum mic I could bring if need be, although odds are not the same quality as the one you guys can bring (this is a nameless mic that was sixty bucks new, although it sounds better than it has any right to).

Sacreligion said[orig][quote]

Good to know that the options are there if need be. Between Casey's naturally loud drumming and my atmospheric guitar tone pushing inhuman amounts of low end for a guitar versus being relatively low on the presence scale, usually things work out a lot better if we mic the half stack just for that little extra oomph. Otherwise, I can put it at the front of the stage and the crowd hears fine, but we can't hear it, or I put it at the back of the stage, and every cymbal crash cuts through the high frequencies of the chorus in the distortion like a knife, because the soundwaves are physically dissipating before they get there - so the crowd can somewhat hear it, but it slightly seems to be fading in and out obnoxiously like an unintended phaser effect. Since I'm also covering for all bass frequencies it at this particular gig, micing the guitar will be especially helpful if possible.

Good to hear there's reverb. Hall reverb is a necessary part of the slight of hand to create the illusion that my vocals are decent

I also find that adding hall reverb to the keyboards and kick always tends to enhance our sound, and (although I doubt you'll have time to do this at the show) sometimes when we're doing a particularly gothic/atmospheric song (Mourning Rain, a Type O cover, etc.) we'll even throw an extra two mics on the kit turned up very low through the board but doused heavily in hall reverb; it creates the illusion of that type of drum sound quite convincingly by adding the extra sense of depth to the toms and snare.

I totally agree, it's not worth putting the guitars through the PA, any amp worth it's weight in salt can be heard well in the room. As fas as snare/toms.. i think they CAN be heard, and i plan on having MINE heard, but i think a big part of that is where you're setting up the drums. I set mine up on the side, in front of the amps. And that gives them a much better chance of being heard. (You can turn the amps up, you can't turn the drums up.) Also you gotta whale on the drums, which is also up to the drummer.

With all that in mind for the drums, and some common sense for where you put the amps in relation to where the band members stand, you should have a workable stage sound for the band, and you'll have the potential for a great overall sound.

Also you gotta whale on the drums, which is also up to the drummer.

I think individual musicians matter as well because some people hit harder than others on average. With our drummer, we'd never mic the snare and toms for volume's sake (unless the room was gigantic), only for that aforementioned reverb trick, because he hits pretty hard when it comes to the heavy stuff and it would be overkill; I'd consider Matt Johnson of Despoilment another top-notch drummer with this same quality. On the other hand, I've seen plenty of good bands where a really impressive drummer had to do a ton of fast beats during a set and you could barely hear the drums for a lot of it, not because the guitar volume was ridiculous, but because the drummer wasn't the hardst hitter and was pacing himself out of necessity; in these sorts of situations, it sounds great if the snare and toms are mic'd but fairly lacking otherwise. There are also times as a soundguy when I've had to turn up the kick drum microphone five times as loud for a particular band that I really liked because their drummer muffled it a lot and didn't hit it too hard - and I always had to adjust a bit for each drummer I ran sound for even the kick drum was the only one being mic'd. So it really depends on the player.

Guitar volume is all about the presence factor in the guitar tone. If we were say a straight thrash band, I could have a 100 Watt Cab and be fine in any mid-sized room without a microphone. But since the guitar tone I go for is more of a doomy, gothic, low-end driven sound that cuts out a LOT of midrange, even with my 400W half stack cab, it still helps to have an extra boost because our drummer is on the louder side - because, as a flip side to the rule you mentioned, when a hard hitting drummer plays a heavy beat, he can't "turn down" either.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Apr 22,2010 10:07am
so, not to be a dick but, your whole large first paragraph there was to..... agree with me? I'm pretty sure i stated that you have to whale on the drums, which is up to the drummer. But by all means, make the same point i did, and make it sound like you're adding something.

hahaha, sorry i couldn't help myself.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Apr 22,2010 10:15am
I was trying to show the difference I had on the guitar point but that I agreed with you on the drums. Just shooting the shit.

Shadow - Casey definitely hits hard enough for his snare and toms to cut through. Reverb on the kick may sound dildoes but if it's just the two of you then I may actually be able to push some guitar through the PA(although if you set up evenly with him on the stage, and just angle the cab slightly towards him so he can hear it as well, you should be able to produce enough volume where mic'ing the cab won't be necessary. I could also mic the cab, but only run it through a monitor for him.)

Directions to the back loading area:

If you are on James St. with London Billiards on your left, continue past until the first street on the left(before the bridge; Genessee St.), take another left in the gap in the chain link fence and continue straight until you pass the vans. Once you get past them I would imagine you'll see cars with stickers everywhere.

Just listened to a few quick mixes from last night.......

Alex - Take the blankets out of your kick drum. your kicks sound like pillows.

All the chaos and low end in scaphisms set makes the recording sound a bit rough. with some proper mixing it will sound decent. way better than your live demo thats out now.

Useful idiot sounds like a fucking tool cd. ok so maybe the guitar is a little thin here and there but no big deal. jims drums sound SOOOOO good. i decided im borrowing them when its time to record. ha.

H#9 - again the drums sound killer. vox are a tiny bit rough when the singer pushes it but overall sounds great.

Suicide dream - little thin sounding with just the guitar and shadows vox are a bit low. good stuff.

Fx Ex - holy shit the line level from your tape deck was hot as hell.

FoB - bands with super boomy bass are hard to mix. sounds and levels are good. just gotta clean up the muddieness in the eq. matts' vox + hall reverb in a can + natural room reverb = satan

Forced asphyxiation - sorry i didnt get a chance to mike alex's set. pa issue.

The snare and tom mics were just for the recording. The kick wasn't necessarily quieter but didn't have the snap that was helping it cut through for the other bands. It was all good though.

This show was an epic drumfest. Cassette Tape, Alex, Casey, Brian, Jim, Alex, Matt...Epic.

this kicked ass, Tom deserves a round of applause for planning this so well. even with a really late start it still went without a hitch. the sound was killer, especially for Useful Idiot. that was probably the best i've heard them sound, they nailed it. the bass tone cut through so well. this show was awesome. Me AND all of Useful Idiot had a wonderful time, we really did.
Tom + crew:
you guys really put on a good show. Obviously we would want to do it again whenever we can.
That was the best i'd heard scaphism sound, Hard #9 was definitely similar to the black crows, not only in that catchy groovy way, but also in that "they had tons of hot-ass in the crowd" way. Josh is the man for recording, i know that was a pain in the ass, but he stayed on top of it without holding up the show as far as i could tell.

TOM - I did NOT leave my bag there, it was in Jimmy's car... and i'll talk to Aaron this morning about his card.

lastly - you guys are all real nice for saying the nice words. I frieking LOVE Tool, and have for almost 20years. I've seen them 25 times, and Danney Carey is the reason i started playing drums, so i know better than most how disappointing most Tool tribute bands are... and it feels great to hear that we didn't let anyone down.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD  at Apr 26,2010 9:19am
I saw Tool live at Ozzfest '98, and your drumming was AT LEAST as good if not better, a real highlight of the night. Personally, I'm not as big a fan of their albums as many others because it's very minimalist on the guitar front, and certain songs just got way too much radio play for my taste, but Tool's drum parts really grab you when played live in the way they lead and shape the song, and you nailed them to a tee.

Thanks to Tom for putting on such a great show, to Tony for singing, to Mike for doing sound, to Josh for recording everything, and to all of the bands.

A special thanks also goes out to marijuana, without whom this show would not have been possible.

I was in the lawn for that show, so maybe part of it was being up closer during you guys' set and feeling the natural vibrations of the drums making the parts stand out more; I personally enjoyed watching you guys more. Plus, at the '98 tour, Tool was in between incredible sets by Megadeth and Ozzy; given the comparable lack of melody and harmony with those two, it was hard to sound anything beyond "good" in that slot. Of course, that's a guitarist talking here, I can understand a drummer finding Tool live more interesting than Ozzy live.

im interested to hear what you think of the rough mix. i should go back and compress the vox at least.

Well, i'm not realy getting a good idea, cause my work puters' speakers suck. But so far i can hear almost everything. I would say the drums are the most quiet, but that could be these speakers. I definitely can't hear the bass drum. The bass/guitars/vocs are all loud and proud, and all sound clear and even. Which is impressive. I know you obviously don't want to spend the time mixing, but Kyle (our bass player) will, and i'm really looking foward to hearing it. (and to hearing this on good speakers.) It sounds like you got some good clean sounds. You haven't done anything with any other songs have you? You have the rest of the set and just only did a rough mix of this one, right? You da man dog, i mean that.

yeah i only picked one song from each band to do a rough mix to. Usually the song with the least "noticeable fuckups"(a weird popping thing happens twice in 2 of your songs, lots of feedback in others etc.). I mixed it on a pair of headphones quick. plus the monitors here have a nice bass response + no mastering would explain the lack of kick.

When I have access to a better computer I might mix one song from every band for reals to use for portfolio type stuff.

Aside from the tremendously hot drums, did the sound come out ok for FxEx?

fuck if Arron doesn't sound just like Maynard and Hooker With a Penis isn't one of the best pissed-off songs ever.
