40 years ago today, the first metal band made the first heavy metal recording. Four decades and countless generations of heavy metal, NWOBHM, speed metal, thrash, grindcore, death metal, black metal, doom metal, metalcore and nu-metal, the genre is still raging hard -- and mutating to meet its future.

In 1968, the sound that would become known as heavy metal began to coalesce. That January, the San Francisco band Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran's classic "Summertime Blues," from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording.
