Hah...that's like if I said I've never heard the name Richard D. James

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2010 9:49am
no jon, that is not the same. It's like if you said you'd never heard of Frank Sinatra.

toggletoggle post by Slag nli at Jan 15,2010 9:50am
I am totally serious. I have been sheltered from the drumming world. Apparently voltage controlled filters and low frequency oscillators have controlled me for far too long.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2010 9:51am
Just tell me you don't play drums.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2010 9:52am
Buddy Rich is quite possibly the most famous drummer ever. He's the one who used to dual on the sammy davis jr. show with Gene Krupa.

You're welcome.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Jan 15,2010 9:53am
He did rudiments like he was born doing them. He used one drum in more ways than most drummers could use a whole set.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jan 15,2010 9:56am
a little interesting fact about buddy rich is that he was never able to read music. everything he ever played was improv.

toggletoggle post by arktouros at Jan 15,2010 10:00am
really dude, look on youtube for Krupa, BR, Jo Jones, Max Roach...these guys are fathers of modern drumming. to this day there are only a handful of drummers (and musicians in general) in the world that can begin to reach their level. they all sold their souls to the will of satan to be the best drummers the world will ever see.

my grandfather has willed his walk-in closet lifetime collection of big band, jazz, and swing records to me. he saw krupa and rich countless times when they were starting out.

If you're playing with big bands all the time like he did, the chances that he didn't read (or couldn't as Garret says) ANY sheet music to get time changes is strange. I'm not saying it's downright impossible, but i've read a whole lot about him, and i've never heard that statement.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jan 15,2010 11:26am
Agreed. When you're surrounded by musicians of that calibur you've got to at least know the basics. Given he's a percussionist though, I'd say the chances of him reading it as well as Gillespie or others, is quite slim. Jazz is more about the free flowing progression of theory anyway. Unless parts are specifically composed, they aren't reading music as it is mostly improv. Jazz is incredible to watch, especially of you catch the same wave as the people playing the music.

How you play within the beat in jazz can indeed be very freeform. But.... whether or not you can play within the beat without reading music, you still need to be able to read music to know where the meter changes are. And yes, those are organized within even jazz compositions.

Let's do some dmt freeform jazz.

i've played drums on DMT. At least the Ayahuasca tea form... it WOULD be totally impossible if you smoked the freebase form... you can't even brush your teeth if you freebase it.
