New site? Maybe some day.
Is this awesome? (Y/N)
Y!
I used to make video games with RPG Maker back in the late 90's early 00's. Shit ruled. You should get RPG Maker VX, and post some some forums. There are some amazing people out there. Also, they just released Unreal Engine 2 or 3 or something and that could be cool to fuck around with too. |
Also, what school? An art school or something like WPI? I know they had some sort of video game program. |
Good luck. Very demanding market and not many jobs for that right now. I applied to various companies and only heard back from one. The best one in boston right now ia curt schillings company. It's a shame blizzard is in ca, an iD is in tx. |
I'm pretty sure there's a Bioware something or other not far from here. I think. There's Harmonix too but music games have run their course, imo. |
I iss the days of writing music
for an independent gaming company. I'm eventually going to apply to companies once my portfolio is a little better |
Yea, I know a kid that helped design maps for one of the lotr games. There's also a company around here licensed by microsoft that just released a history type hack and slash. The name of the game escapes me.
Basically most companies are in CA or TX |
Yeah. Though I'm doing electrical engineering for a major and computer engineering for a minor, I want to find a way to either weasel myself into the guitar/bass amp industry or the gaming industry. Either become an amp designer or a video game programmer/music writer. Or all three!
I actually just decided today to brush up on my Ruby script and get back to video game making. Like 10 minutes before this post was made. I'm doing some research right now! |
Looking at New England Tech; they have an 18 month Associate program. You guys will be playing a lot of completely redonkulous /r/-related minigames in the next year or so. LOL |
Video game music ftw. A few of my old tracking pals wrote music for gameboy advance games. |
Yeah, it is. I originally studied CS to do just that.... but the market is too competitive, and I realized that even though the prospect of working with modern game engines is the ultimate puzzle, I couldn't bring myself to sit in an office most of the time, no matter what I was doing (though I do that now...)
There are 2 things you need - a degree from a real university (not DeVry, UofPhoenix, FullSail, etc...) and a bitchin portfolio. You have what it takes to make a killer RPG, or anything else for that matter. I've been wanting to mod the Source engine for years, I would jump at the opportunity to work on a real project if you want to get something started. |
I'm down too. For music and or design. I've got 100s of video game songs that I wouldn't dare post here. |
I have some thoughts. Small-unit-based dungeon tactical roguelike goodness. |
aril, if i get serious about making rpg's again. I might commission some songs from you...though I would be making the majority myself! |
Sure. But let's hear your stuff. Garage band, fruity loops, and reason don't count! |
There's one thing that's hard to come by when working on games - good 2d/3d artists. |
Good, make an original Dawn of the Dead game already, FACK! |
Steve - just remember before you make the jump -

QFT.
I personally would love to see a good side scrolling (BRING IT BACK) rpg, with good graphics. Kind of like wonderboy games for sega but better. |
Dude, I was a fucking sick pixel artist years back. Also, aril, I don't use garage band, fruity loops, or reason. I write my midis in noteworthy composer or guitar pro. It's kind of cheating but I don't make it all playable on guitar either. Guitar Pro is actually way harder than Noteworthy Composer for certain things. I know you hate standard notation though. |
Wha? No i don't. I just disagree with it. |
Oh well. I just use Guitar Pro because it's the best midi program I've found for Mac. Thought I suppose I haven't searched very hard. I'm going to be dual booting 7 anyway so that I can mess with RPG Maker VX so I'll probably snag Noteworthy Composer and I'd like to give whatever program you're using to sequence a try, if it works. |
I think those midi programs are too time consuming for what you get out of it but that's just me I guess. |
Time consuming? You just write out what you want to hear. It's no more time consuming that writing music is time consuming... which it can be. Thought I suppose I don't know how fast working with your tracking program is. |
It's much faster when you understand the way tracking functions. It's basically a 2 year learning curve, unless you read the Zen of Tracking. |
My girlyfriend is toying with the idea of doing some video gameage school. She wants to totally change course from fine art / painting and look into 2d/3d character design. Haven't really done any research on it yet though as far as what's required, what jobs are like, what the demand is like etc. |
There's no demand because there's a lot of supply, pay sucks, requirements kinda blow. I was pursuing this for years before I got fed up with it, and now I can't survive on what I would make.
She totally should!!! DO IT MEL!! |

I'm pretty much banking on my creativity to be able to make myself marketable - i.e., having kickass pet projects to get my foot in the door somewhere. Worst that happens is I at least have a degree and get some layout/design/3d modelling etc. courses that I can apply elsewhere. |
it's a very challenging market up here. move to CA and your chances increase. |

Don't let people talk you out of it because of demand. It's always worth doing what you love. I'll probably be broke for life but I love being a photographer and can't imagine doing anything else.
You just gotta work hard and stand out. This message brought to you by my mothering side. |
Steve, let me do the creepy game music! I've always wanted to score a game. |

Yeah, I'm pretty set on the idea now. For whatever reason my girl's completely behind it, so that helps. Now I just need a weed dealer that has a lion. |

Narky, you and I can collaborate on COMPLETELY ABSURD SLAP BASS HERO. The controller has 678 buttons and knobs and levers and it's all Victor Wooten songs. |
There is a Rockstar office in Andover actually.
Also, that Karnov DDR had me in tears. Loved that guy/game. |
Sorry Mortiis, the Chiodo is in another castle. |

Wooten is a tad overrated on slap imo! |
casiopea's bass players > victor ego. Samething with bela fleck. Dude can go suck on a banjodick. |
Codzo 3D.
"You have joined a white power band. GAME OVER." |

ego or not wooten is pretty damn good. |
i'm messing around. Of course he's good. The best? nope. |
I've wanted to compose soundtracks for VGs for a long time now but have no idea how to get into the field. My portfolio consists of bands that people on RTTP hate. |
ive already made a chiptune bova song if anyone wants to use it. |
Bova Hero - you plug in the controller and then the animated Bova just laughs at you and shreds. |
I think we need to design that. |
Fuck you guys. There's already a Bova video game.
Scottie Pippen just sits on the bench and renegotiates his contract while Bova tomahawk dunks on the entire eastern conference. |
Does he bust out a hot lick after every dunk? |
It's official, registered, financial shit set in stone, books bought, class on Monday. FUCKING SURREAL. Can't wait for my classes on teamkilling fagorts and pwning n00bs. |
nice, very nice. good luck man. |
Dark Wor: Battle of Justice
coming soon to stores near you! |

RAZZLE DAZZLE |
Psyched - the Intro to Game Design book references Baldur's Gate like every 3 pages. (Esp. as an example of the "open-ended RPG" as opposed to the "gay weaboo bullshit railgrinder".) (Not the actual terms used.) |

fucking killer dude. I'm in my last phase at school, doing Linux. After that it's 20 weeks and I'll have an Associates Degree in Applied Science. Also i need to get the A+ at least. Good Luck! |
DYA posted this my birthday. He owes me pot brownies. |
Shit, I owe me pot brownies; if I can figure it out, I'll share. |
1/2way thru 1st day. There's totally a guy here wearing a Warhammer shirt. Looks like a total weenis. No hot Azn girls, I've been lied to. Fucking with MS Visual Studio nao. |
wheres my GTA: Worcester?! |
Hello world!
Ask him if he likes Bolt Thrower. |
LOL - just totally finished Hello World v2.0. |
Champlain College has a very good well known video game design program. |
KLIK n PLAY OR GTFO
/THREAD |
Congrats, Steve! Very happy for you. Best of luck! |
way way funnier than it should be |
Klik N Play. Please tell me you remember that. The demo came with sim city 2000. |
So I've taken exactly one (1) Photoshoop class. LOL

Also, that Karnov DDR had me in tears. Loved that guy/game. |
ITT: Much-needed Karnov love
Imma go play it now. (The actual game, sadly not Dance Dance Karnov) |
Alex: Where is your monkey?
Dante: He's upstairs putting his nun-chucks away. |
Turbine Inc is also located in MA somewhere. I forget which town. They did the LOTR online game. Old college roomate works for them doing level design.
Good luck. Like everyone else has said, it's a very competitive industry and doesn't really compensate that well unless you are the CEO or John Carmack.
Be prepared to do something completely different from what you have in your head that you are going to be doing...for long hours...for shit pay. It's like any other software development project except the content you deal with is more interesting to you.
Not trying to talk you out of it, just sayin. |
Steve what area are you planning to focus on? 3d Rendering/animation? Texture artist? programming side of things? |

Can't say exactly cause I've never pursued it myself but these skills also apply to the film/tv industry since almost everything is filmed on a green screen these days an painted in later. I'm hoping those movie studios open up on the south shore. Last I heard there were financing issues. |
Looks like those studios may fall through. The only way it can happen is if they have the financial backing.
The company they got the loans from didn't have the money they said.
Part of me wants those studios to open up... I'll definitely be hanging around there after I blow thousands in the middleboro casino. |

Programming / slash / design, hopefully - planning on pimping my own pet projects more than trying to work my way through the ranks, but we'll see how it goes. I've got the game design chops from pen-and-paper shit over the years, it's just picking up a programming language newer than Basic (what I learned on). |
I gave up pursuing this field years ago. I think I've had interviews with almost every MA company, several of which don't exist anymore. |
like I said, klik n play or get the fuck out |

this is my favorite post of all time. |
