cynic and devin townsend together on tour = awesome

i liked the first btbam record and the stuff i heard on colors, but everything in between did nothing for me. i also hated them live but have only seen them once and it was a long time ago.

i don't know who scale the summit is.

i want to go to this.

The first two btbmam's were good, alaska was ok, colors was good. Not a big fan of the cover album.

Just got my 3 tickets in the mail for this. I'm stoked.

The new Devin Townsend stuff is great, but I'm wondering how it's going to come off live. The new BTBAM is different. Reminds me a bit of the last The End album in places. Cynic is a favorite.

Now who the fuck is Scale the Summit?

Tickets were $17. With fees it came out to around $25. That's not bad at all, even if you only dig one band on the bill.

Scale the Summit is a mathy instrumental band. They were on the Progressive Nation tour with Dream Theater and Zappa plays Zappa. They fit on that bill but this is bizarre. Love The Devin Townsend Project though.

I would like to see this, but 100 Demons > fruity vocoder Cynic. Cynic without the fruity vocoder is a different story, however. I predict fruity vocoder and/or abundance of new hogwash.

Blue, I am SO sorry man. I saw your post when I was getting dinner on my way to the show. I had an extra ticket I would have given you free, but I don't have your # and I can't post RTTP from my phone. For the record, Reverend, your security imageabob thingy you need to type when you post does not display in PIE on my treo.

I tried having Chris call you, but he didn't get you til Cynic was almost on. I feel terrible, that ticket was wasted.

As for the show: Fucking AWESOME. Cynic was great. And there were other bands too. I'd give a review, but I'm too busy letting it all sink in. I say fuck the naysayers, the Traced In Air stuff is amazing. The yoga? A little gay. The NEW new song? Hmmm.... I don't know if I can be such a Cynic freak if that's really what's coming. It's Aeon Spoke with distortion. Great for the people that hate the robot vocals, but I love them!

I spent WAY TOO MUCH on merch. All of it Cynic. I got an autographed drum head, A set of Cynic drumstics, a copy of the digipack TIA album, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. Looks like Cynic is gonna be eatin dinner on me tonight.

I gotta stop now, or I'll start gushing about guitar tones, solos, and SEAN REINHARTS (sp?) MAGICAL FUCKING FEET.

BTBAM with a shocker. The played "More of Myself To Kill" off of their self titled.

toggletoggle post by reimroc at Jan 29,2010 5:54am
Show was awesome. Cynic blew my mind. Listening to the traced in air songs live really changed my outlook on the album. I used to consider it a stain on cynics record compared to focus and now its still not as good as focus IMO but its definitely not a stain anymore. The rest of the bands were good as well. All around it was a great show for people who like to get stoned and attempt to count time signatures.

toggletoggle post by jeff_met_aliens at Jan 29,2010 10:10am
holy shit what an awesome show. Between the Buried and Me is probably my favorite band and while they did put on the best show I've seen from them, Cynic blew my mind wide open. Been a Cynic fan but never too hardcore into them. After that though, wow, seeing them live is an experience in itself.

Kinda silly for people in this thread to be like 'wow BTBAM iz the best band evar. But it took me just nao to realize that cynic is way better than that bullshit'

Gotta say I liked BTBAM (hate saying that but yeah). I don't think they're the best band evar, but they are certainly better than a lot of bands of their ilk. Loved the random country parts haha!

Devin was frickin awesome! He played a bunch of the heavier stuff which ruled. I was super bummed that he didn't play a longer set (his twitter said that he was a little sick haha), but man it was worth it!

Cynic surprised me. I gotta admit I hadn't heard a lot of Cynic before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I happened to enjoy the yoga and meditation stuff! Nice change of pace from the violent music of Devin haha. Seriously, great show in general!

Scale The Summit needs to play the Berklee Performance Center and not the House of Blues. They're a super talented band, but they would fit better at a smaller more chill venue.

It makes me happy:

1) seeing people that were not familiar with Cynic getting into them
2) seeing people that worshipped the first album finally appreciating Traced in Air

We know that anything new is never as good as what you grew up with, whether video games and music.

Meanwhile, as a newer fan, I got both albums at once. Focus is amazing, but TIA is better. Better production, better writing, better lyrics, just NOT AS METAL.

Exactly the reaction of most people, if you make them wait some 10+ years for another album. If I'd known about cynic in the 90's, I'd hate Traced in Air too, likely.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jan 29,2010 2:25pm
Really? You think the composition is better? I could care less about the metal aspect of it as I know Paul moved away from metal with everything else.. But there's no Textures or Veil of Maya.
Traced in Air is a good album but I was expecting more. My buddy bought the box set and loves it- he keeps telling me to listen to it more because it will grow on me.
I'd rather listen to Gordian Knot or even that "portal" demo they put out after cynic disbanded. With focus, it was love at first listen. Wasn't the case with traced in air for me. But then again, I haven't given it enough play time I guess.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jan 29,2010 3:16pm
Give it time. It will grow on you. Remember, you are also in a different place now than you were when you heard Focus. It's not just the band that changes over that span of time.

Compositionally Traced in Air is way more cohesive than Focus. A lot of the riffs on Focus were at odds with each other. You mention textures, which is my absolute favorite song by Cynic. I love it. However, there is nothing else like it on that album. On the opposite end, there is nothing else as heavy as Urubolic Forms on any of their albums. The whole disk is all over the place. Add to that the crappy sound (even on the remaster - shrill guitar is shrill) and it isn't nearly the presentation or experience of TIA.

Remember, pot and headphones!

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jan 29,2010 3:17pm
and after last night I am in crazy gay love with the new guitarist man. Also the bassist shreds, and I feel bad that he doesn't get to play on the albums.

absolute truth. I could do that all day.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Jan 29,2010 5:08pm
Coming from someone who has had a longtime cynic boner, I had no problem (and totally expected) with the sound change. Gordian Knot gave me a good idea of how they have 'grown' musically and when I heard the pre-TIA demos I really wasn't suprised at what they were doing.
