Seattle metallers NEVERMORE have finished recording their new album, "The Obsidian Conspiracy", for an early 2010 release via Century Media Records.

The drum tracks for "The Obsidian Conspiracy" were completed in the group's hometown of Seattle with SOILWORK guitarist Peter Wichers, who previously worked with NEVERMORE's Warrel Dane on the singer's solo debut, "Praises to the War Machine". Longtime friend and collaborator Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, ARCH ENEMY, EXODUS, MACHINE HEAD) will once again be handling mixing duties.

The following songs (among others) were laid down during the recording sessions for the follow-up to 2005's "This Godless Endeavor":

* "Emptiness Unobstructed"
* "Without Morals"
* "And The Maiden Spoke"
* "Termination Proclamation"
* "The Obsidian Conspiracy"
* "The Blue Marble and the New Soul"
* "She Comes in Colors"
* "The Day You Built The Wall"
* "Poison Throne"
* "Beautiful Mistake"
* "Crystal Ship" (THE DOORS cover)
* "Transmission" (THE TEA PARTY cover)

According to Dane, the song "And The Maiden Spoke" "is going to blow your minds; it's twisted, progressive lunatic fringe riffing with vicious hooklines."

holy fucking hell, This Godless Endeavor is too good. This band can do no wrong. Amidst all the shredding and melody you'd expect from a power metal band they can actually compose and flow with emotive doom-laden vibes. Warrell Dane is one hell of a singer.

The one-guitarist version of Nevermore already gave us the self-titled, Dead Heart In A Dead World, and Enemies of Reality, so I think we'll be just fine, given that track record

All great albums. I would have to say that DNB is probably their darkest and most emotional recording. In fact, it's one of the darkest concept albums ever written. You can feel the pain emanating from Dane's voice, parallel to all of those crushing riffs.

do you know the actual story behind that album?

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Oct 23,2009 10:38am
I do. Many years ago Dane was involved with a girl who up and left him one day, and ran off with a religious cult. She was never heard or seen from ever again. A number of years later, before preparing to write their newest album, which would become DNB, Dane started having recurring nightmares that his lost girlfriend was screaming out for him, drowning within a lake. It prompted him to immediately write the lyrics for the album, and the title track in particular sums up his pain. At the end of the album, the man longing for his lost love (which is Dane) has spiraled into insanity and then commits suicide.

Really uplifting, wouldn't you say?

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Oct 23,2009 10:40am
yeah that's a fucked up story. the last track is one of the most depressing things i've ever heard.

toggletoggle post by MikeOv at Oct 23,2009 10:40am
Not to sound lame, but the album really hits home if you've ever lost someone you truly cared about, intimately.

DNB was such an odd album coming after Politics of Ecstasy. First couple of listens I was pissed and thought they were trying to write a pop album or something. By listen 3 or 4, I realized how fucking depressed the album made me....you know...in that good sort of way.

has anyone heard any updates on this album? There has been like nothing since they finished mixing it. I read on one site it was supposed to be released on 1/26 but that obviously didn't happen. On their wikipedia page it says it will be out on 4/1/2010 but thats a Thursday and new releases come out on Tuesday so I'm thinking thats a joke now.

and they played at the 2003 NEMHF and it was during their cover of the Sound of Silence that everyone got on stage and went nuts.

Lotus Eaters and No More Will have the most depressing lyrics of any songs I've heard. DNB is my personal favorite jsut for how miserable it is. I like the sound of Politics of Ecstacy though. Guitars are just ridiclous on it (used Mark IV instead of Dual Rectos). Dead Heart is their most popular one and their latest CD was awesome. WTF, when is this thing coming out!?

toggletoggle post by kessaris   at Feb 27,2010 7:08pm
oh, and the warrel dane album is totally soilwork with warrel dane on vocals. I liked the Jeff Loomis CD because it was basicly a Nevermore CD with no vocals. They'd have been better off combining their efforts though to make another Nevermore album.

I don't think Nevermore could release a mediocre album.

I'm sort of on the fence with Praises to the War Machine. It's definitely NOT Nevermore. To me it sounds like Soilwork or Killswitch Engage with Warrel Dane on vocals. It's not really my style but I liked a couple of songs on there. If I had to choose I'd take Zero Order Phase over War Machine any day of the week.

I don't remember what they used for their debut full length but I know it was Mark IV for Politics, Dual rectos for DNB and Dead Heart (he also apparently used a low 70 for his low B on Dead Heart), Triple Recto for Enemies of Reality, and I thought Andy Sneap reamped his sound with Krank but it sounds like he's using a Recto on This Godless endeavor. Maybe they're mixed together.

toggletoggle post by JDDomnli at Feb 28,2010 10:38am
I don't think he EVER used a Krank head. Yes, he is was endorsed by them but I've been told when they setup the Krank cabs and heads onstage, behind them is simply a miked up Mesa Triple Rec. It's all for show. That was a few years ago. Now that he has an Engl endorsement, I bet he actually does use Engl amps cause they are good.

According to andy sneap there were four rhythm guitar tracks for every song on this godless endeavor, 2 were the triple recs, panned 100% left and right and 2 were the kranks, panned about 80%, if i recall correctly

From Neil Kernon's Forum:

- Vocals: Shure SM7 into 9098 into distressor then cranesong A to D's, Processing: reverb one, digi delay, bit of pitch shift -9+9 either side, compression was renaisance compressor with PT and waves De esser just to keep him in check.

Nevermore (Self Titled):
Solid State Head Unit (Exact Model Unknown - Owned by Jeff at the Time)
Solid State Preamp w/Peavey Power Amp
Unknown 4X12 Cab with Celestion Speakers (Exact Model Unkown)

This album was composed of two demos recorded sepeartely on the different rigs mentioned above.

In Memory EP:
Mesa Boogie Mark IV Head Unit
Marshall 1960B 4X12 Cab (w/Celestion G12T-75 Speakers)

This EP was recorded during the same sessions as the "Politics of Ecstacy" album using the same rig. It was released 3 months prior to "Politics."

Politics of Ecstacy:
Mesa Boogie Mark IV Head Unit
Marshall 1960B 4X12 Cab (w/Celestion G12T-75 Speakers)

Dreaming Neon Black:
Mesa Boogie Triaxis Preamp
Mesa Boogie 2:90 Simul-Class Power Amp
Mesa Recto 4X12 Cab (Armor Plated Model w/Celestion Vintage 30 Speakers)

On all the albums with Neil Kernon, there were 4 tracks of rhythm recorded, and primarily a Shure SM-57 or Sennheiser 421 was used.

"I was pleased with the way the album came out. Personally I think it was my best work with the band, and I really liked the material a lot.
As with ASU, POE and IM, we did the album down in West Texas, at Village Productions (the name would of course change to Sonic Ranch a few years later). By then I was living in TX, so for several years I was doing all my work there. The album was a bit rushed though as the budget ended up being reduced from that for POE for some reason. I think we did the entire thing in 17 days, from top to bottom, including the mix, which I think I got 3 days for. Still, I remember we had a lot of fun doing the record. I always enjoyed working with Nevermore - great bunch of lads. Lots of wacky zany fun with the NM chasps.

As far as the end result, I don't have any issues with it, because as yet I've never encountered the problems others have mentioned on any of my systems. The album was mastered in HDCD which potentially is a louder mastering process than the normal 16 bit process, so I can only presume that some systems couldn't handle the extra volume generated by the 24 bit mastering process, producing some weird distortion or something.

As far as recording techniques, I don't think I did anything particularly out of the ordinary on that album. Also, as we had less time to make the record than on POE I can certainly remember putting in longer days on DNB just so we could get it all done. That said, it's still MY favourite of the four releases that I produced for the guys.

From Sneap's:

DEAD HEART IN A DEAD WORLD:
Custom Built 7 String Guitar loaded with EMG 707 pickups. The guitars were routed into a Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer that was used as a signal boost. The settings on the TS-9 were:

Drive: 9 O'Clock
Tone: 10 O'Clock
Level: 12 O'Clock

This was fed into the amp that was used on all of the rhythm and leads. The amp used was a Mesa Boogie (2 Channel) Dual Rectifier that was straight from the box. The Mesa Recto was routed into a Marshall 1960B 4X12 Cab with the stock 75 Celestions they have. Settings on the Mesa Recto were:

Silicon Diode Setting
Bold Setting
Red (Modern) Channel
Treble: 11.30
Mids: 10 O'Clock
Bass: 11.30
Gain: 12:30
Presence: 12.30
Master: 10 O'Clock

There were 4 tracks of rhythm, with 2 tracks being panned 100% left and right, and the other set being panned 80% left and right. There was no compression, limiting, etc…only a slight touch of EQ used. Two Shure SM-57's were used for recording, one on the center of the cone about an inch away. This was the approximate's denoted by Andy Sneap previously.

I don't think I believe that they didn't use the Kranks when they toured with them. Loomis used to have 2 heads, both switched on, and 2 cabs while Steve Smyth had 1 head and cab...again, they were turned on. So I'm betting they did use them, even if they did run a mesa behind it. they could have always A/B'd the signal. Plus I don't think they would go through the trouble of faking what they're using...their stage setup isn't exactly complicated.

On Dead Heart I'm pretty sure I've read a thread like the one posted here that shows all the settings and amps and stuff used for Nevermore albums. On the thread I read it said Loomis was playing a low 70 or 80 string gauge for his low B flat. thats like using a bass string.

PS - anyone hear Sons of Liberty (is that the name?). It's Jon Schaffer's solo project of him singing about America with a drum machine and recycled IE riffs.

that is one of the greatest songs ever written.

i am so psyched for this album, in today's fluctuating metal world it's hard to gauge what an older band will release, but with Nevermore every single thing they have ever released has been amazing. i thought the same thing when they released This Godless Endeavour, and that album blew me away. believe it or not i think that Dreaming Neon Black is my least favorite, it is no way shape or form sub-par, but in their discography it's the one i listen to the least. Politics, Dead Heart, and Godless win all.
