Or am I just getting older and more out of the loop with the "cool" kids? I remember 3-4 years ago, there was at least a show or 2 every week at random halls. But now, not so much. Did these halls finally say enuff znuff, or like I said, am I just out of the loop?

They realized people wanted to book shows there and upped their price to over $600 for a single night.

There's very few halls that'll do shows now and most venues can be rented cheaper than the halls that are willing to host them.
Also they have PA's and workers that would do the work the promoter/friends would do. (doors, sound, etc)

It's basically useless to rent a VFW unless you can find one cheap or if a venue isn't available.

What actually happened was dumbass kids getting in fights, breaking shit, and stealing from the halls. I went through a list of about 30 VFW halls in Worcester county and every one that had ever hosted metal or hardcore concerts decided to stop for one or more of those 3 reasons.

Beachmont vfw in revere was doing shows still last I heard. It's pretty expensive to rent out though.

2 words: Police detail. To book a hall show you need to hire a cop to detail the show and pay them OT by the hour. That means that all the screwing around between sets, the hour and a half late that the headlining band shows up, and the fact that the retard promoter insisted on booking a 5:00 show on a Friday night and had to wait till 8 to start the show because no one showed up... all adds up to about a billion dollars in some drunk cop's pocket.

And that's when you can even get a cop to take the job.
