1:31 p.m. ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that an unnamed team executive told him that the Padres asking price on Gonzalez is astronomical. When asked exactly what that means, the executive replied, "Three times the asking price on Halladay." Seems to confirm Jon Heyman's previous report on San Diego's demands, doesn't it?

1:44 p.m.Heyman reports via Twitter that Padres closer Heath Bell's name has come up in trade talks with the Sox, prompting this question: "Isn't Boston's 'pen good enough?"

1:56 p.m. According to a tweet by USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from the Indians. We'll have more on this report if/when it can be confirmed.

What about him? He's gone next year. And Martinez is going to play first, youk is third and Lowell is going to get days off. Makes sense. Victor plays 2 days at catcher, 2 at first and maybe one or two at DH. This absolutely is win win.

Haha how many do we need? Bad enough we don't have room for all of these guys. We need a solid bat. Martinez will def be that. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see halladay as much as anyone else, but I don't think that's our biggest problem.

3:19 p.m. The Globe's Tony Massarotti confirms that, according to a baseball source, the Red Sox have traded Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price to the Indians for Victor Martinez.

3:21 p.m. Yahoo! Sports's Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox have dealt Adam LaRoche to the Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman. Kotchman, 26, is batting .282 with six homers and 41 RBIs this season. LaRoche spent the first three years of his career with the Braves. He was acquired by the Red Sox on July 22 from the Pirates for a pair of prospects.

haha I swear to you. However, halladay has a no trade clause and I don't see why he wouldn't waive it. The angels are a first place team. And not for nothing, but wasn't the manny trade announced at like 5 last year?

Yea, they say it ends at "4" but discussions are usually going on until 5ish. I still think the Sox have a 3rd deal going on which might involve Halladay.

I don't get the Kotchman deal. Martinez can play first base. I understand they had to ditch LaRoche, but if the Sox had to go for another position player, they should have gone after Marco Scotoro. If they couldn't get Halladay from the Jays, Marco's the next best thing. Quality shortstop having a great offensive year.

i dont get the kotchman deal either. my theory is that that deal and the martinez trade was supposed to help towards a halladay trade; the jays didnt want to trade him to the phillies cause they weren't offering enough major league-ready players. martinez is a good hitter and will solve some problems for next year, but without another sure-fire starter (halladay) or big bat (gonzalez) i dont think this is a world series team

They have one of the better teams in baseball right now. So they're in slump, so what? Still have two months of baseball left and they will easily make the playoffs., barring any serious injuries.

i dont know man. the rays can catch fire at any time, texas is only two back in the wild card, and i wouldnt count the twins or white sox out either. beyond beckett and lester im really not confident in any starter we have

The Kotchman deal was dumb. LaRoche was definitely a solid player and deserved playing time. I see Kotchman as a decent bench player.
