i've recently been getting back into photography.. picked up myself a used canon 10d and a couple lenses.

i have a 22-55mm canon , 55-200mm canon and a 50mm 1.8

i like shooting with the 1.8 because i can get some great shots without the flash but recently picked up a 430ex flash to mess with.

what sort of settings/lenses do you use at the shows

sometimes i shoot in aperture priority but i really am not a fan of motion blur that i get in the low light sometimes.

if you wouldnt mind educating me a little.. i'd really appreciate it

thanks man!

here is a link to my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/tinygiantclothing

I you are shooting a concert, never use aperture priority. with concerts DOF isn't the issue it's freezing motion so shoot shutter or manual. Even at f/1.8 at places like the DBH or other indoor places, you are lucky to get anything at 1/120 ISO 1600. I also hope you got a good deal on that 10D cause @ keh they are around $300.

i forgot about that thread.

not really .. i wasn't asking what you use for settings then

i was just mentioning my gear so i could get some good recommendations on what to use

and posted the flickr so you could see what i've done. basically i'm looking for settings advice and cretique on composition.. lol if you would kind sir

i had an old fish tank setup that i was getting sick of . I traded the tank setup for the camera/lens and a 16gb ipod touch .. it was a good trade

i keep flirting with the idea of grabbing a 50d at somepoint.. maybe if i can score a ton of seniors this year for photos and put all the cash toward it.

the 10d takes some nice pics .. but its terribly slow. if i shoot alot it take a good min to be able to view the shots i took.

all my other gear will work on it so i should be fine to upgrade at somepoint

do you generally use a flash?

i'll have to play around tonight if i can break free from the door. usually i shoot at f/1.8 1/90-1/125 at 800 or 1600 if i go in to manual mode.

i want to grab the IR transmitter for the flash so i can use it off body. i think i could have better luck that way

I almost always use a flash since i don't shoot raw.

I usually shoot f/4 1/160 ISO 1600.

if you are going to buy something wireless, go RF if it's 3rd party. IR is the worst. If you are going to go IR, get a 550ex or 580ex since they have it built in and I think you can drive your 430ex as a slave.

i think the 430ex has the ir on it.

i'll have to browse through the manual

thanks man!

Chris

The 430EX can be fired with radio if you get wireless triggers. I have cheap ass Japanese ones I got from Gadget Infinity (I'm using the new ones, the Cactus V4's) that fire probably 9 times out 10. Obviously cheap but they get the job done for wireless without dropping hundreds of dollars. They are like 40 bucks, lots of fun.

Good for learning off-camera flash, you can spend the big bucks later.

If you get the 580 you can have your 430 slaved like Rev said, you're just at the mercy of the IR eyeballs needing to see each other.

You can also get a cord so you can hold your flash at arm's length, the Canon cords are about 40 bucks on Amazon. I love mine.

I do shoot RAW and I still use a flash, no-flash is pretty tough if you're looking to freeze motion.

And while you're at it, stick that flash on 2nd curtain...it's in the manual. It looks like >>> on the back of your flash. That'll fire the flash at the end of the exposure and help you freeze the subject at slower shutters.

I realize you didn't ask my input but there it is anyway.

thanks! yeah i'm just looking to learn..lol i dont care where the knowledge comes from.

i shot today at f4 1/180 and a few at 1/250 with iso at 400 and they came out great. I tried on 800 and 1600 bu the shots were far too bright.

i'll see how they came out when i play with them on photoshop and post the link to the collection so you guys can give me some pointers if you have some time.

i didnt shoot as much as I normally do because i had to be more active on orchestrating the show than i normally do.

thanks a bunch!

I feel so bad when I see people trying to focus with that thing. nikon sc-29 ftw.

pics from last night . i felt alot of the shots were snap shotty last night .. but in a couple of weeks i'll get used to the stage and be able to compose a little better i think. but overall the shots came out great.

thanks for the pointers rev and pam

i shot with the flash on the body and like 2-3 clicks from staight up and i had the wide angle shield on it

If you want less "flashed" looking, you could try slower shutter speeds to bring up the ambient light more and balance the flash. Although it looks like there wasn't much ambient to speak of!

yeah there wasnt at all.. couple stage lights but not much.

i think ihad my f stop a little high. . my dof seems at little off .. the close shots were great but the ones with some distance were a little off.

i think i shot it at f/9.5 i was experimenting a little

i'll drop back down to 4.0 for next week
