I've been listening to much that people call, "metal" recently -especially a lot of local stuff which for better or worse is highlighted on this terrific forum. My question is, why does it all sound uninspired and mediocre? Is it just a lack of talent, or maybe artistic vision -maybe there is something in the water... For all the bands trying to brutal, if you haven't killed anybody STFU. Ostensible violence is necessary -unless all pretenders are to be relegated to the role of -scenesters- and I know you hate being called that. Garbage is only one influence of a lot of these bands, they also enjoy Hole and the Foo Fighters.

Mediocre to your standards or not, at least when a metal band puts out an album, it's something the band created. Pop artists just rubber-stamp their name($) and logo($) on other peoples music that have no other association with the "artist($)" other than collecting royalties for writing their songs.

I dunno, maybe you haven't been exposed to enough of it, but i've found plenty of local and otherwise bands that i really love. And i too like to think i have high standards in music. But that's what it comes down to doesn't it? Standards... which are opinions. It just seems wrong to me to say such a blanket statement when it's such a personal taste thing.

I gotta disagree about this. Pop culture is generally shit, metal's the exception. The exceptions of the exception are metalcore, nu-metal and nu-black.

There are definitely a lot of shit bands everywhere; there have always been shit bands, but there has been a steady influx since MySpace has made it infinitely easier for people to find new music, find band members, find shows, find labels, etc. There are also a lot of great bands, but it's very hard sifting through the shit to find those "diamonds in the rough."

If it helps, as much as I love metal, two of my favorite bands include Led Zepplin and Alice in Chains. I don't put that kind of influence into the music I write but I still love it. IRAPEJESUS needs to stop whining and someone needs to drop Shirly Manson off at my house so I can do terrible, unforgivable things to her then leave her at some corner in Manchester with a roll of quarters.
