Agreed, the flick of the wrist style sounds like a computer making music. I like a little sloppiness in my tunes, it adds a certain charm that no computer can reproduce, it lets you know that the people making it are only human.
Fuck man, I'm still pissed I only got to see these guys once. I found their three song demo pretty recently in my stuff and was so happy I played it as soon as possible. One of the best bands to ever come out of Providence during my time, no doubt.
Bobby Jaz. is sick, i love his style and the whole backside cymbal thing he does is great.
I try to make it a point to have a little bit of emotion when i drum. Robotic drummers, for all their skill at times, are like fucking a dead girl. You can get em to do pretty much anything but sometimes you want a little movement every now and again.
While I agree with you, for the type of music that Nacrophagist writes, the dude does EXACTLY what is called for.
THAT, IMO, makes him a great drummer.... for the type of music they do.
The real test would be to see if he could hang with a less "techy", more groove-oriented band.
For instance... John Longstreth in Origin = fairly impressive. good fit. John Longstreth swith Skinless = no soul, no groove, over playing, too fast, not a good fit.
What impresses me most about guys like this, is that they don't hit as hard as most metal drummers, but they hit consistently and they hit properly so that the drums sound big regardless. That's just good technique. Some drummer put more emphasis on that aspect of their playing, which in some cases results in a less exciting sound, but more proficient playing.
i couldn't tell you what makes me like a drummer. I like different drummers for different reasons... like when Marco Minniman was playing with Necrophagist, it sounded totally different, way more dynamics, fucking awesome. But i still love how it's played live now, although different.
i completely agree with the whole certain drummers fit certain styles.
You hit it right on the nose Rooster, guys like this fix exactly what they need to do.
a great drummer for me fits the musicians hes playing with. as well as adding to the band and putting his voice in the music. if im listening to something, whatever style of music it is, and a fill or something sticks in my head and makes me wanna play it. Thats usually how i figure out if i like the drummer or not. I was mostly speaking of drummers with no soul that sit back and just play and are pretty much a walking breathing metronome.

When you come back, you should check out their latest incarnation, Bonestorm. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
Marc and Sweaty are two of the nicest guys you could meet, as well as Sly and...well, not Craig, fuck that kid.

This man knows what he's talking about.
See Marco Minnemann with Necrophagist, and then see Marco Minnemann with Paul Gilbert.
