"It's really no different than the pioneering spirit of many in past history, who took the one-way trip across the ocean, or the trip out west across the United States with no intention of ever returning."

I dunno, I think it's a bit different. For one, if you were traveling west across the US at least you know you could set up camp wherever you want and live there, no matter how isolated. In space on the other hand, you'd have to come to terms with the fact that you'd be spending the rest of your existence inside a ship. Never mind the fact that you'd almost definitely NEVER find a naturally habitable planet, the ships probably don't have any way to land.

Wherever you would be, there was at least oxygen, water and (usually) plant and animal life.

In space, if the machine fails, you die.

But, on another level, it's pretty similar. Leave the known and take a bunch of tools and go set up civilization somewhere else. It's just that we have better tools now (in addition to the average voter, who is the biggest tool ever).
