i just realized that the router firmware on my linksys was out of date...
so i decided to update it...
right after i updated it, it is not recognized on my cpu [wirelessly] and is not recognized when i plug it in to the slots on the back, anyone have any ideas of what i can do to fix this?

toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Jul 15,2009 1:33am
ok i got so wired it works,
but i dont know how to turn the wireless on...
going to http://192.168.1.1 goes no where now.... egh

right now it says, my routers ip is...
i type that in my browser and i get nothing.

Keep your computer plugged in via the wired cable. There's a reset pin in the back of the router. Hold it for like 20 seconds and it should reset back to factory defaults. Reboot your machine (easier than troubleshooting if you have a new IP via DHCP). And try http://192.168.1.1 again. Username should be blank. Password should be "admin".

dd-wrt is sexy... I would use it, but I just bought a recertified netgear
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122274
but I'm going to use it for the draft-n and gig-port switch to replace a gig switch and a a/b/g AP that I have.

Now that I think about it, I'm going to still need my 54RT downstairs. maybe I will put dd-wrt on it.

I just realized that I have to keep the linksys downstairs and put in a gig switch (unless I put the netgear down there) otherwise, I won't have gig from my desktop to my storage. lame.

holy crap... if I wanted the linksys version of what I bought for $34.99, I would have to spend over $100.

dude i think your router is fucked up it looks like its working as a switch

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:29pm
are you plugged in wired?

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:29pm
24.147 i think thats comcast yes?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:30pm
and it should be acting like a switch on the lan side.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:31pm
yea but i doubt the router is issuing that ip its too nutty

toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Jul 15,2009 12:31pm
i think it is...
i am plugged in wired.
i tried updating the firmware last night cause it was from 2001 or something.
i guess it fucked up now the wireless is fucked and ps3 wont connect through the wire

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:32pm
what happens when you hold down the reset button for like 30 sec

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:32pm
I looked up 24.147 to see if it was like 64 in windows trying to make a localnetwork.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:33pm
no local is 169. some thing . something

are the lights on the router working? is it plugged in?

toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Jul 15,2009 12:37pm
yes the lights are working the internet and the light where the ethernet going from the router to my cpu are flashing the wireless light is off

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:38pm
here is the deal your router is working as a switch or bridge and it only knows the mac address of your computer which was probably cloned on the router

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:38pm
it wont issue you multiple ips anyway from comcast

toggletoggle post by xanonymousx at Jul 15,2009 12:40pm
haha my luck this past week has been shitty...
anyway you know a fix?

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:42pm
dat router needs to be reset hold down the button with a pen 15

toggletoggle post by dertoxia   at Jul 15,2009 12:43pm
what do you get when you type in ipconfig? The default gateway should be the IP of the router.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:43pm
that's exactly what it looks like. which now makes sense (except for the v6 addy is comcast down that now?)

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:44pm
dertoxia- his router aint issuing him an ip even he got it from comcasts dhcp somehow

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:46pm

xax, did you unplug cables to hook up the router? either you plugged the WAN cable in to a LAN port or your router is passing through (bridging). that would mean you are fucked unless you reset the router.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:51pm
if u have 2 ethernet ports you can use your mac as a router then the modem as a switch

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:52pm
i mean router as a switch

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 15,2009 12:56pm
he's already using his router for it's switch ports so I think he knows that.

toggletoggle post by sxealex   at Jul 15,2009 12:57pm
but i mean if he puts it behind his computer he can get multiple ips so everything he has will work

i only have 1 ethernet on my laptop.
i just unplugged the router im connected direct to the modem im letting the router sit for a bit,,,
i dont believe i plugged the WAN into a LAN port. it doesn't seem to want to reset while im doing so

ok thanks for your help much appreciated.

unplug the router from your modem. just plug your mac directly into the router without the router being connected to anything else.

I want a modem/router/ap in one that does N and triple speed.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 24,2009 3:50pm
and?

He's probably only getting a public IP address on his workstation because he switched from going straight into the modem from straight into the router. If you're quick enough switching plugs your machine won't both looking for a new address via DHCP. It'll keep the IP address he got through the modem.

If you haven't done it already... plug into the router and THEN reboot and see what you get via ifconfig (rebooting easier than explaining how to renew IP in these situations).

I just spent the last 2 days at work doing a client's ISP's work for them. They were no help. Bonded T1's going into a Adtran router which then hooks up to an MPLS WAN that connects 4 other sites across the state. Fucknig connection would drop out for a few minutes every hour. Lame. ISP wasn't helping.

Turns out it was multiple issues. One of the WIC cards on the router went bad AND somebody on the internal network plugged in a voip phone and set the IP as the default gateway that all the Citrix servers use. yay. Finally got both issues fixed. Multiple things going wrong at once = troubleshooting hell.

yea it really sucks when you are doing this stuff for someone who doesnt know shit cuz they think its your fault you cant get it to work when the isp is the bastard usually.

wait, people actually use MPLS? I'm guessing it's a pure ip network? I've always been curious how a router would be set up to handle non-ip traffic over MPLS. Yes, I've theoretically done it by pushing and popping labels, but besides the macs, there is no way to know what an mpls label is unless you set up multiple labels. People should just use S/C vlanstacking since it's basically based on 802.1Q, but I guess you can run out of numbers easily.

I'm been working on all these packet types on a new product for over a year.

I've also had that issue with keeping the ip, but it's on a mac so I figured they were smarter. But how could he still get out to the net that way? That was my issue. I couldn't get to the net cause the gateway was wrong.
