toggletoggle post by monster_island  at Jun 3,2009 12:49pm
not talking about the video ... met those guys when they played the Campus Club in Providence in 1992 ... total fags ... so we drank all their beer and ate their food and then recycled the beer back into the pitchers ... its funny how you hear their music and think they'd be cool cats and they end up being totally gey ... kinda like all these local band rockstars of today !! lol

Frenchy asked a lot of stupid questions. I'm surprised David kept his cool

Classic Grimoire. I still to this day reference that.

Srsly.

The whole Goo Goo Dolls thing? Did he pick some random band on Metal Blade and just fail in the most pathetic way possible?

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Jun 3,2009 3:24pm
he asks at the end, "Have I upset you?"

He was definitely trying to get a rise out of him but failed.

Wow, frog's have a lame sense of humor, I guess. And despite his stint in Genitortures, Vincent still rules.

I'd rather have gey people with good music than un-gey people with bad music. Kind of like how I end up respecting Halford a lot even though I have never tasted of the manlove.

What about your take on Chuck?

His music helped sell out death metal and was always overpromoted. His net effect is negative. That he's gay is just a fun provocation.

Wily provocateurs

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at Jun 3,2009 7:31pm
How did he sell out death metal exactly? By raising the bar and writing more technically proficient metal, as opposed to perpetually playing rudimentary death/thrash?

You mean, years after Atheist and Morbid Angel made more technically interesting music?

He tried to make death metal into heavy metal again. He wanted to reverse the flow of time and go backwards, not forwards.

Even more, he was a relentless promotional whore, taking the place of better bands, and treated many of the people who got him to where he was like shit.

I don't find his music inspiring, except "Scream Bloody Gore" and Human, most of which was ghost-written by the (also gay) people from Cynic.

Are we talking about Death here, or Control Denied? Comparing the riffs of later Death material to Heavy Metal is a stretch, haha. I don't hear Judas Priest when I listen to a song like Zero Tolerance. Vocally, he did try pulling a Halford on The Sound of Perseverance, I'll give you that (Painkiller cover obviously being a dead give away). As far as Atheist is concerned, Watchtower was making far more technical music than both Death or Atheist, in their earlier years. Both Human and Unquestionable Presence came out in 1991, I believe; both being their real breakthrough albums. Compared to early Death material, I will say that Piece of Time definitely contains more involved songwriting. It actually reminded me a lot of Sadus.

early Watchtower sounds like Rush but heavier and thrashier.

Indeed. That's a fantastic album.

I also think early albums from Massacra, Hellhammer, Possessed, Master, Sepultura, Morbid Angel and Destruction invented more death metal than Death.

never met Chuck but smoked a whole lot of agriculture with Chris Reifert ... i loved Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy ... i had bought Spiritual Healing when it came out and listened to that briefly ... then lost interest in the band altogether

I agree with the above mentioned bands. Honestly, I can't really listen to pre-Human era Death, it bores me now.

Consuming Impulse > Early Death.
