Do bands, promoters or anyones else ever pass out flyers for upcoming shows anymore? I am finding that more and more no one is passing out flyers or putting flyers on cars in the venues parking lots while a metal show is going on. Seems like most are relying on a myspace bulletin to promote and then wonder why no one shows up at local or small metal shows.

Anyone?

we've lacked on it...but we're making a conscious effort to do it more and more

we still do pass out flyers , but usually we hang them at other venues , record stores bulletin boards . newberries has a rack in the front of their store for just such a thing .

I just emailed Rusty one we can print out. I'm kinda starting to frown on the 'net, I don't think it's as effective for getting people to shows as we once thought it was. The paper stuff seems to be doing a lot more good.

Yeah, I feel putting flyers on cars (under the windshield wipers) at the venues with good metal shows is the best way. Online is decent to get your music heard I feel but to build a fan base I think old school flyering is the way to go. And not just hanging a flyer at guitar center or the venue, getting them in metal heads hands is the best way.

I definitely won't be flyering my Bone Awl show at Summer Slaughter @ The Webster.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Jun 2,2009 10:18pm
I never think about this because I'm successful.

Flyering is for faggot bands. NOT prominent businessmen.

When I was growing up, I loved getting flyers since I hadn't been exposed to that much underground metal, and of course the internet lacked the proper resources for the most part. Now it seems when you try to give a flyer to anyone they shy away like you're a homeless person asking for change or one of the annoying fucking Children's Foundation people that have been flooding South Station recently trying to guilt trip everyone into donating.

I still pass out fliers all the time. Sucks when you do and people tell you they'll be there and the show comes and it feels like you wasted time when those people aren't there. So be it though.

i always make flyers for pretty much every show i play. i feel like im often one of the few. paper flyers rule, and to me are a part of the underground metal experience.

I have noticed that as well and why I put them on cars now at all the local metal shows. Even if they don't look at it right away when they grab it off their windshield they usually put it in their car and will hopefully look at it at a later date.

I just see way to many shows/fest that only get myspace promoting and then no one shows up and everyone is standing around wondering why?!?!?!?!?!?!

If you pass out flyers, there will always be people who will throw it away/leave it behind as soon as you turn around to hand out the next flyer...others will always take it, say cool about it to your face, then not show....it comes with the territory

Here's the thing about flyers:

With internet stuff, people have to go to the site / url and look at it. It's very targeted. With print, anyone that goes near your flyer will see it and has been "impressed" with the ad. It's much more broad, hits a wider audience, and becomes more of what they call "passive" advertising: advertising that works by people happening upon it, as opposed to "active" advertising which would be like an event, or a promotion.

last time i flyered for a show i got kicked out of the area for "soliciting". also a good place to flyer is drive through windows

the trick is to capture the rouge metalheads in the area that have no idea about local music. there's so many of these chumps walking around.

you guys ever talk to these random metal people you see walking down the street? this one guy in middleboro of all places, started talking about burzum to me and a friend, yet I highly doubt he knows anything about local metal bands.
there's this one fat broad I saw at the supermarket wearing a cradle of filth shirt but I would not want to engage into conversation with such people.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Jun 3,2009 12:42pm
I have. I keep having people tell me about their band and talk about how there's no local shows in New England.

Rogue metal-heads oblivious to local bands... I call them "Hanks". Generic / lowest common denominator metal heads whose name could or should be Hank. Passtimes include Bud tallboys, dirt weed and Slayer. Drives a black Camaro or Trans Am. Has a friend named "Skully" or "Viper". May have microwaved a cat once or twice.

toggletoggle post by goatcatalyst   at Jun 3,2009 12:57pm
Oh yeah - Do not want them at my shows.

toggletoggle post by arilliusbm  at Jun 3,2009 12:57pm
hahaha. it's funny because there are these "rouges" everywhere.
although an older black Firebird or Camaro would be a great car to have. always wanted a Firebird with the fucking decal on the hood.

haha i guess i should change my name to Hank. only replace bud tall boys with PBR tallboys, and dirt weed with good ass nugget. and my old roommates nickname was in fact "Viper"

A former rogue that I take credit for converting is UN: boblovesmusic
