i have been in a few bands before, sort of just fucking around making a few songs, but now i am in a band that i think could go places in a few short years (hearing bands like 13 winters among others gives me hope in knowing that even shitty bands can get record deals and make albums and TOUR) knowing this, we keep our music "good" in a sense, we only have 2 originals right now but all of us really like how they came out and think they are quality songs, we are going to make another song or two and make a demo.

so onto my question, certain members have different more pessimistic outlooks on our future, so i was wondering if this has happened to others before and if it had a negative impact on the band?

if you think your band sucks chances are others will too. but whatever as long as you have fun who cares

if you want to take this band somewhere, and actually make something of it, but there are other members in the band that think it'll go nowhere, get rid of them. don't waste your time.

Just keep positive.... negativity show through the music and performance.... if you all belive in what your doing then it will all work out.. have a good time dont kill your selves over success, that will come with time if dedicated to your craft.

I agree with davyp. If you don't think your band will go anywhere, it'll show in your music. The reason why shitty bands get record contracts is because THEY WANT IT (and they know/met someone that believes in them).

Negative members either need to be convinced or dumped. There comes a time in your musical career where you realize you want something, and you'll have to sacrifice quite a bit to get it. I'm at that point right now.

Yeah, this is great, we're going through this right now! Our old bassist (that we gave the boot) was under the impression our band should be doing such greater things than we currently are and constantly wondering "why we're not rock stars yet" and "when are we going to make a million dollars". But then when practice would come, he'd be nowhere to be found! When we'd play a show, he'd never move his own gear, he'd be belly up to the bar, he thought we should have road manager to keep track of EVERYTHING. There's a ton more too but long story short, we kicked him out and we've never felt better as a band. We have been trying out numerous bassists and we'd much rather be doing this than dealing with the old dude and his bullshit. My best advice, go with your gut instincts!!

dude the intricate band relationship life cycle is hard to predict. it's good your asking for input about this, communication is the key. it's like if you guys know what you want to do and you all have the same views and drive then you can get there but if you guys don't all have the same views and drives and motivations then you'll come up on small to major snags along the way unless you can communicate a common goal for the band putting aside all the differences in personal opinions. Being in a band is like having a girlfriend except you have 5 or 6 or 4 of them and you all are girlfriends with each other that can get pretty tricky. Patience, Communication, Perseverance, Temperance, and Focus will all help you on your journey. glad i could babble that to you... don't be afraid to cut the chord on some one or reorganize an entire band. you'll eventually end up doing the Incest family band swap that all muscians end up doing unless people stop playing completely(which sucks because the music should be in your heart not some fad but it's understandable if people have other things larger in their heartthat they have to do... not just being some cheeze that doesn't do shit and used to play) or have their band get big and there's no need for them to change bands or what not. A rare gem is if a band has all it's original members and succeeds forever until they are to old to play. .... keep on playing and feel it from the heart

thanks for the input to everybody, im glad to have heard from others because although i've been in other bands this is the one i really feel can go somewhere, but it's just like you all said some negative outlooks that could end up getting us into a problem

anybody else wanna say something?

don't let your hope break your heart if shit doesn't go as planned , but use it to motivate. Like our planet, life is a spiraling ride in the middle of nothingness aimless meandering in dark space with an eventually gloomy dommy end. So have fun on the ride!

Another good piece of advice I can give you is Never Give Up! I've been in quite a few mediocre bands and finally feel like the one I'm in now has the most potential, communication, and common goals to succeed. Some bands I was in from the past I thought might have a chance of being productive but there have been many negative things that have taken all that away. My experience is that you need to go one full year as a band to figure out if it's going to work or not. That's almost like the standard waiting period. After a year if your band is still arguing or still struggling to create new stuff, not on the same page, etc. it's almost inevitable that you're waisting each others time. If however a year passes and you're all still as happy as you were when you played those first couple shows than you're in for some fun times. Just my experience!
