I'm looking for any of those older ampeg heads. Vt-22, V-4, V7. Im probably going to run it with a less aggressive more vintage sounding head to balance out the kind of low end and sludginess that the ampegs have. So, if you have one for sale, let me know.

there was a guy in Albany selling one... heeeeellllpfuuuuuulllll

The crate shockwaves got the same preamp as the old ampeg vh-140, ss-150, vts heads if you;re into those.

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 22,2009 11:58am
thats what I've heard. I'm having this bad cat like head being made and its only 30 watt and I want to throw in some low end as well as some other tones to incorporate, so I was thinking of running a 100w+ ampeg.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Feb 22,2009 1:05pm
dude's looking for older tube ampegs, not the solid state high gainers.

Yea, I read his post too quick and though vt140 was somewhere in there.

Blue, youre familiar with gear as I know. what amps would you push me towards? my ideal tone is somewhere around a jane doe-era converge and i'm not trying to spend a whole lot because I've kind of had my fill of boutique gear for now and I'm investing more in a guitar as opposed to an amp. i'm kind of interested in the ss ampegs but i'm not entirely sure they will fit my needs.

thanks for those CL adds too. does anyone know what nicholas uses for heads?

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 22,2009 3:51pm
im looking to spend like $500 max prob.

toggletoggle post by badsneakers at Feb 22,2009 5:50pm
i want a v4 with reverb to use for bass

that doesn't help you though

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Feb 22,2009 5:54pm

That Crate head is completely different in almost every way...except it says "Crate" on it with even the wrong logo

FAIL

toggletoggle post by the_taste_of_cigarettes  at Feb 22,2009 6:05pm
Yeah the Crate and the Peavey were both like $100-150 each Used.

The key is to keep looking around used dealers and shit.

I love the Lab Series shit that I used to run. It was made by Gibson from what I understand. You can find that stuff DIRT CHEAP most place. Solid fucking tone.

INTERESTING FACTOID:
Early Crate Amps

In the late 1970's, Crate made amplifiers that actually looked like wooden crates. They were manufactured with the same sort of chest handles found on military footlockers

I can't seem to find it :(

It's a 1973 Reissue Crate American "Yeah."

Although it does not have an on switch, the head may only be activated by playing the entirety of the Young Jeezy joint, "My President."

the v4 is a sweet amp. Troll craigslist and ebay for them.

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 24,2009 6:40am
So yeah, I guess I found one and should be picking it up this week. I'm basically going to use it, probably run some pedals through it and then if I end up gigging an assload and have the money, I'll prob get a Bad cat or a Bogner.

toggletoggle post by Blue  at Feb 24,2009 7:10am
Bad cat > bogner

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 24,2009 2:33pm
depends on my money situation. im only in high school lol

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Feb 24,2009 2:38pm
haha...I got my Bad Cat and I regret nothing. But I could have never paid for it until I got a full time job

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 24,2009 3:09pm
haha yeah. I can pay for gear because its really all I do with my money. what bad cat did you get? lynx?

Now (Mainly to Brian/Blue) I got a question: before I go through and get this V4, basically what I'm doing is getting this amp, and getting a First act custom Sheena made (I lurve them) however, the thing is, I've been considering just going out and getting a Bogner with the money I get from selling my amp now and just dealing with my Jackson DK2M until I can afford an SG of some sort or something else.

What do you guys think is a better idea?

toggletoggle post by DJ DEATH at Feb 25,2009 1:06am
Bogner= Simplicity, and warm tone. Loud but shrill.
Ampeg v4= The best single Channel head ever, HUGE bottom end.

- Go with the V4!!!

toggletoggle post by The_Rooster  at Feb 25,2009 4:38pm
If you're going to get a V4, and you want high gain sounds for metal, I suggest dropping some loot on a really nice OD pedal. There's no way in hell you'll be able to get it cranked enough to saturate hard, without going deaf. They are seriously fucking loud. I've never gotten mine to breakup enough for the sound I want without it being WAY too loud to stand in front of.

I've also never turned mine up past 10 o'clock, after which my drummer asked me to turn down.

But all that aside, I fucking LOVE mine. Like seriously. It's THE sound I've been looking for. With some help from my Fulltone OCD pedal (w/ a boost in front of it for the really high gain shit), it's so heavy and thick. The EQ section is the best sounding and most versitle I've encountered. The switchable midrange is a god send for carving out a little low mid, or adding some upper midrange presence. The subtractive high EQ does an amazing job of eliminating all the harsh, nasty bullshit that just hurts your ears. The low end is unbelievably massive. I keep the bass knob at zero most of the time (unless I'm playing more doom-styled riffs). It's a very 'chameleon-like' amp that is capable of a huge range of sounds.

Awesome for bass too. Breaks up quicker than guitar, for a nice distorted bass sound.

If you get it, I would recommend sending it to a competant tech for a check up. Mine was a little noisy and the tubes weren't biased optimally, but after having it serviced by a real tech., it blows me away.

$500 is a good price these days. I got mine for $450. I see them regularly on Ebay for as much as $800, so even if you don't like it, you've already gained on your investment, and can make a profit flipping it.

I'll see about posting a song that I recorded recently with mine, so you can hear an example of some of the different tones it's capable of.

Oh, and the reverb smokes, if you're into reverb. Super clean.

Let us know how you like it, if you get it. I'd be interested to see if it suits your style.

An O.K. guitar will sound "O.K." through any amp. The guitar (aside from you.. the player) is the most important thing in the signal chain.

I vote, get the V4 plus a good OD pedal, and the nicer guitar. You probably won't regret it.

Hmmm...Its basically just a matter of, do I want an okay guitar with a sick amp or a sick guitar with an okay amp. The problem with the V4 is its not going to suit all my other needs if I want to play other kinds of stuff.

The V4 is a 'sick' amp, but if you must make that type of decision, I'd go for the better sounding guitar.

If anything, a Bogner is going to limit you more, IMO. They seem to do metal alright, but they don't come across as the most versatile amps in the world.

The problem with the V4 is its not going to suit all my other needs if I want to play other kinds of stuff.

Have you tried one yet? If not, can you try one out before you buy it? That's really the only way to know if it's the right amp for you.

Same goes for the Bogner, or any other option you're considering. Always try before buying, if you can.

toggletoggle post by michaellivingston at Feb 25,2009 7:34pm
Yeah, i've tried all of the amps im considering out. the thing is, i like teh v4, im just not crazy about it. I was thinking if i dont get the sheena, i would get an eastwood mosrite rip off and throw an emg p81 in the bridge and stuff.

i was also looking at a soldano slo clone or just a striaght up slo
