i'd love to go but practice and ralph's tonight is much closer. |
i was absolutely going... till we booked recording for this weekend, and then a show at ralphs tonight. |
so is this show not coming to Worcester on Saturday? Damn events page. You have forsaken me!! |
No, they snubbed New England with this tour.
And another tour which has no (true) New England date that I've just noticed:
The upcoming Amon Amarth tour. It doesn't head north of Connecticut. It's up to you guys if you consider that New England or not. |
what??? Amon Amarth is ditching MA? fuckers. |
i'll be there shootin' this sheiit.
this tour should have popped the house of blues cherry. |
Fuck that, we've got George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic next Wednesday. |
good thing i didnt end up going to this... fuckin sick as all hell |
Wish i could go see cynic... |

Wish i could go see cynic... |
TWD played with them and another gay deathmetal band you probably love.
it was so gay they all were rockin black and green colors |
cynic-awesome. new york-far away. situation-bullshit. |
DAMN...i've got to be locked in the studio which isnt very far from tthis show all night long tracking |
wait cynic is playing in NYC tonight? Paul M is a very strange guy. Waaaaay too mellow and seems to not really "be here". I saw them back in 1994 in Hadley, MA and talked to him for a while not knowing he was in cynic. the dood was just out there, he was talking to me about some tree that was outside The Vertex and how it reminded him of ... u know what i honestly do not recall what he was talking about but a tree...i was more interested in eating my burger and seeing Sinister! |
Anyone ever hear "Portal" ? I'm assuming so because they included 3 songs on one of the rereleases.
It was 3 Cynic members after Cynic with a female vocalist. Very strange music, but I don't mind it too much. |
i guess this show is sold out too just an fyi for anyone who was planning to buy at the door |
Drove up to see this in Montreal last night, very much worth it. Much nicer city to visit than NY and only two hours further (from RI). They played everything from Traced in Air, except the last track, and a couple from Focus. |
This show is exactly whats wrong with the joke that they call a "scene" right now. Nothing but stupid wigger kids and posers will go to this show. Pathetic. |

fight me or youre a pussy |

So Cynic not only put on an epic set, but played tighter than a gnat's anus. Meshuggah? Reaffirming once again why they're one of my favorite bands ever. Their sound was absolutely CRUSHING, killer stage presence, and their set was apparently filmed for a DVD. In my opinion, no other metal band can contend with their aesthetic of unrelenting brutality.
Oh, and I love this man.
I was there. Meshuggah killed. Was awesome to hear "Suffer in Truth" and the 1st track from the None EP.
Cynic was gay as hell. I hated every second of their set. |
no one gets Cynic. they have their DIE HARD understanders and i read that 90% of their fans are musicians so... i guess if you play an instrument you'd get these guys. but i don't. respect them but they really are not a band that should be touring with Meshuggah. Maybe Dream Theater or Atheist. If you go on youtube there are clips of the DVD footage they are putting together. Its kinda cool but man Paul has not changed, still out there in another world. Maybe Paramahansa Yogananda brainwashed the dood. |
Cynic isn't really a band to "get", in my opinion. You either like them or you don't. |

See, I hate this type of attitude. Such a pompous and lame fucking thing to think. It's also one of the many reasons I hate bands like this... Because some of their fans feel like they are at a higher level of musicality and understanding than us lowly "regular metal dudes", because they "get" Cynic, or Dream Theatre, or Opeth, or Steve Vai, or....
It's the type of drivel that appeals Guitar Center employees and the dudes that post the "watch how sweet my shreddzzz are" videos on Youtube.
Jazz fanatics can be like this too. I may not understand everything that's happening harmonically, or rhythmically when I listen to "Bitches Brew" or "Kind of Blue", but I know I like it, and I know why I like it.
I play an instrument, but I don't relate to that shit at all. Metal is, IMO, supposed to be heavy and aggressive, not filled with vocal synth harmonizers, and solos that sound like Pat Metheny's throw-aways.
Obviously, people are entitled to listen to, and enjoy whatever bands they want, but when that enjoyment is accompanied by the attitude that a person has reached a higher level of consciousness that enables them to understand the music better than we common folk, I get irritated.
IMO, bands like Cynic talk an awful lot, but don't really say anything meaningful.
To each his own I guess. I listen to plenty of stuff that you guys would make fun of me for. |
Or maybe Paul has benefited from his spiritual pursuits? He came off as quite humble and articulate; not to mention that his guitar playing and vocals were spot on. I personally enjoy Cynic's music and I can't think of a better band to tour with Meshuggah. Both bands have seniority within the metal genre, and both play technically proficient music, with thought-provoking lyrical themes. |
Here's what I think about cynic, short and simple:
No other band plays their style. Focus was original. I like it, I respect them immensly as musicians, even though they're not as "metal" as the other bands from FL in the early 90s.
If you guys want to hear the rael Cynic, check out the demos from 1990 and 1991. Otherwise, fuck off. |
Um, the 'real' cynic? All of their material is tr00 to what they have wanted to achieve musically, regardless of if you can hardly call it death metal anymore. And how ryan rooster feels about cynic fans is pretty much how i feel about tool fans. |
'real' Cynic in the sense that the people who don't like them.
I like all Cynic. I like Portal and Gordian Knot as well.
"real" for those who just want to hear metal = the 3 demos before Focus. |
And how ryan rooster feels about cynic fans is pretty much how i feel about tool fans. |
i'm a huge Tool fan and i feel the same way.
i agree with everything Sir Rooster said as well, understanding a band or genre doesn't denote some kind of higher level in life, and just because someone doesn't play an instrument doesn't mean they are incapable of understanding a band any less. tr00 kvlt black metal fans are like that too, "i only like Khytiopjuctoth because they record underwater in a tunnel and know that Emperor and Burzum are faggy mallcore shit". |
Dude, Khytiopjuctoth is a fucking sick band... |

Dude, you just don't get Tool, bro... LOL. (Crow shares your opinion too, BTW).
I'm certainly not saying that all Cynic fans are as I described. There are of course, exceptions to every rule (I love Tool, Blue love Cynic). I just get miffed when I read shit like the post I quoted previously.
If Blue emailed me and told me to check out a band like Cynic, I would, knowing that his motivations for liking that band are not elitist. I also know that Blue wouldn't tell me "you just don't get it", if I told him I hated it, because in my experiences hanging out with him, Blue is a humble and open-minded dude.
Elitism has no place in music. |
oops... double post.
deleted. |
hmmm.. i dunno, my tool trib band are all really nice down to earth dudes. It would be hard to say that any band with a fanbase that big wouldn't have that same fanbase be made up of mostly morons.. Considering the percantage of the population that ARE morons that is. |
