Guitar solos have and always will be a part of music.

I like some, but when people say they were a fan of Whathisface's solos on whatever record I want to shove them down the stairs and steal their lunch money. Probably laugh derisively and call them a faggot as well.

I'm not saying I don't like them. They add a tasteful aspect to music but as a whole, I don't look for them or go crazy over any particular solo.

Not caring for them is pretty much linguistically equal to not liking.

Exactly. Since I'm a drummer and a vocalist, those are the two things in Metal I notice the most.

I'm not as much into solos as I used to be. I felt that as a metal band there had to be a solo in EVERY song. which i later on learned was retarded.

Besides that. I do think there are good solos. There doesn't have to be one in every song ever but sometimes the way a song is flowing it just SCREAMS solotime. And though it's predictable, you can always wow a listener with your sense of melody. I think so, at least.

i like solos that add atmosphere. meedly weedly is ok sometimes, but i'd rather something like the way Burzum does it. for example, just about over half way through the song "Key to the Gate".

There are good solos and then there's pretentious meedling, which is what most of the guitar virtuoso players do and a lot of Tech Death (although I still like Tech Death). Melody is just as important as aggressiveness.

ok. i think showoff playing like yngwie and even necrophagist account for a pretty small percentage of guitar soloing in metal in general and probably close to 0% in metalcore. what do you think about the presence of solos in bands like death, iron maiden, and metallica? how about rush or black sabbath? danzig?

I think the metalcore kids think it's clever and "oldschool heavyMetal" to do solos.

I love good solos. But sometimes they suck. like reign in blood solo vs. Blindguardian solos. Blindguardian has better solos...

I think guitar solo's are crucial in metal. It all depends tho, if the song needs one then yea it should have one.

The one thing that I hate is bands putting guitar solo's in a song that doens't even need a guitar solo. I agree with Swaplorddym, I think alot of these metal-core bands put guitar solo's in their songs because they think that's its "Metal" and the right thing to do.....

i cant really think of any good bands with solos that would be better without, but i can think of a bunch of good bands that would be worse without.

some guitar solos are amazing, fun to listen to, and enhance the songs they are a part of.

others are filler.

In that case, I would have to say all the cool and awesome solos that exist were already written by those greats you mentioned. The originals are almost always the best.

but could you imagine a blind guardian solo in angel of death? wouldn't fit the style at all, the chaotic soloing is perfect for slayer.

Personally I think if a guitar player took the time to practice his instrument and get good enough to play a solo, why shouldn't he allow himself a moment in the spotlight and show people what he can do?
I don't care if you take the time to craft your solo note by note or just rip through scales as fast as you can, I'm impressed by them. Whether or not I like their music is a different story altogether but I couldn't solo my way out of a paper bag, so anyone who can play them is pretty talented in my opinion and if they want to throw one in a song they helped write, all the power to 'em.

What I meant was that they're not any more special than the rest of the music although some songs are bolstered by a nice solo.

I'm not saying solos suck or are gay. I'm just saying these days solos don't seem to have "passion" or a whole lot of originality. I'm saying the originals are awesome because they're ORIGINAL. There are some great bands who have good solos in their songs and they fit. Some bands only play them to look cool and THAT'S gay. See what I'm saying?

wow. I must admit, i really liked Zao during the two records "the splinter shards the birth" and "where blood and fire" but i was also about 14 at that point.

Zao is one of my favorite bands. I've been listening to them since middle school. I didn't anyone else liked them here. Cool potatoes.

at the old mama-kin music hall on a Monday night about 10years ago. My nose got FUCKED up at that show. Great show, although one of TYOOLs' friends got naked in the pit and was doing cartwheel/spinkick combos with sack flying everywhere. It was scary, yet provocative.

I still haven't seen them live and that is a big goal for me.

Well, I have all their albums so I know what you're referring to but I'm positive it was only their drummer who was into the glam thing for awhile. The eyeshadowed eye on the cover of Liberate is Jesse Smith's eye (drummer).
