A U.S. biotech company says it plans to start this summer the world's first study of a treatment based on human embryonic stem cells — a long-awaited project aimed at spinal cord injury.
The company gained federal permission this week to inject eight to 10 patients with cells derived from embryonic cells, said Dr. Thomas Okarma, president and CEO of Geron Corp. of Menlo Park, Calif.
The patients will be paraplegics, who can use their arms but can't walk. They will receive a single injection within two weeks of their injury.
The study is aimed at testing the safety of the procedure, but doctors will also look for signs of improvement like return of sensation or movement in the legs, Okarma said.
Whatever its outcome, the study will mark a new chapter in the contentious history of embryonic stem cell research in the United States — a field where debate spilled out of the laboratory long ago and into national politics.

Good. I think we should also test therapies on prisoners, like the Nazis did, because it's one surefire way to get useful information without animal testing. |

hahaha i loved obama's remark in his speech at iniggaration about this.
"finally we will restore science to it's rightful position" |
|
I hauled that out the other day. I miss the old days of Sepultura. |
|
that's weird, i was listening to Arise yesterday thinking about how much i miss the old days of Sepultura.

i was the only person in my company cafeteria who raised their fist and applauded. |

It's the one promising aspect of this presidency, but as you know, saying something is true doesn't make it true. I anticipate that he's going to run screaming from other scientific developments, and quash some of our more promising technologies which will come from military R&D.
He's also dodging the big issues. People can still copyright genes. that's crazy talk my nillas |

Can't wait to buy Stem Cell Crunchies at the corner store. |

still it's nice to see something positive done by government with regards to science. |

That Obama quote fucking rules. He's off to a good start at least.
I found my old Sepultura - Under Siege: Live in Barcelona VHS tape the other night. Live show from 1991. Man, that band used to be so good....
I saw the first US leg of the Arise tour, with Sacred Reich and Napalm Death opening. The pit during Sepultura was completely out of control. You don't see shit like that anymore. And then, during the most intense parts of the songs, they'd kill all the lights and turn on the strobe. Seeing some huge motherfucker coming at you in the pit with the strobe light going was awesome.
Then I saw them on the final leg of the Arise tour 18 months later when they were opening for Ministry and Helmet. That was at a place with seats so no pit but that was the last time Sepultura toured when they were still a killer fucking band.
Plus, the guy from Rigor Mortis was playing guitar for Ministry.

Yeah, you have to wonder what turns a solid band like Sepultura in the early days into the utter faggotry it has become. Chaos AD was the turning point, but I think that album is still listenable and not that bad.
And that is good news about the stem cell research. |
|
sepultura used to rule. i need to put up my arise poster at my band's new practice space. |
|
this thread encompasses two critical issues
1- Stem cell research
2- Why the fuck does Sepultura suck ass now? |
|

Pandering to the crowd, instead of offering difficult music?
I mean, every idiot can understand "Chaos A.D." but "Arise" challenges them. |
|
yeah to go from Schizophrenia to Roorback is just sad. sad, sad, sad. |
|
I still love those first 3 releases. They're like blood.
Bestial Devastation/Morbid Visions is the all time favorite however |
|
Sepultura started for me with Schizophrenia all the way to Roots |
|

This is awesome. Eat a dick, Bush. |
Hey, something else we like.
Weeeeeeee technology! |
|
BTW Under Seige: Live in Barcelona is one of my favorite live videos of all time.
QWhat I wouldn't give to have seen them back then just absolutely DOMINATE as a live band. |

The over-encompassing reality of these two issues has relevant substance in the boisterous laughter I experienced upon reading this Pamela. |

When I first saw the Live in Barcelona VHS I was pretty sure he had people chanting MASSIVE PENISES.
Great fuckin song. |
|
ok look, guys. This is all as predictable along party lines, liberal vs. conservative, as predictable can be.
however, I am FUCKING PSYCHED about this administration so far.
Anything that ruffles the right wing / Christian tax leech / Bush-y fucks' feathers makes me spew whey from my nether region.
Perhaps that's the only joy I'll get out of it once the "liberals" sell me down the river for a swastika and pack of chewing gum, but hey, gimme my short term joy.
Gyad, this is SUCH a relief to AT LEAST hear covered in the news. |
|
Zyklon wasn't even a smile on his daddy's face when this came out. |

Yet another reason why all people of Jewish descent should own weapons. The comments from the liberals who should know better are disturbing.
