Does anyone buy cd's anymore to support the underground artist?

toggletoggle post by darkwor at Nov 12,2008 1:09pm
yeah if they tickle my fancy, especially at shows. actually, mostly at shows.

ONLY VINYL IS REAL

toggletoggle post by aril at Nov 12,2008 1:24pm
owning an actual copy of any album is much better than DLing it.
yes, I still buy CDs. only when I can though. I'm flat broke and half of my office just got laid off. hopefully I don't!

Kinda true. All my CDs are fucked up. It's easy to scratch them or have that weird foil shit peel off.

Also all my CDs from the 90's degraded so badly in their cases that I can't even pay them.

toggletoggle post by BobNOMAAMRooney nli at Nov 12,2008 1:35pm
Also, most cars do not have record players; thus your vinyl collection is 95% less likely to be stolen by nigras.

toggletoggle post by todayistheday nli at Nov 12,2008 1:36pm
havent bought a cd in atleast 5 years

toggletoggle post by Lamp  at Nov 12,2008 1:46pm
I would if I had the spare cash.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Nov 12,2008 1:53pm
For the most part, I only listen to music in my truck. My truck has a CD player. I buy CDs.

toggletoggle post by cav nli at Nov 12,2008 2:46pm
i finally just bought a copy of my favorite record of the past few years. haha. fuck the internet.

Best Extreme Metal collection in the known universe!

I might be a hoarder.

toggletoggle post by goatcatalyst   at Nov 12,2008 2:56pm
do-over! there's no vag in those pics.

toggletoggle post by darkwor at Nov 12,2008 2:57pm
dude. if i managed to keep track of my cds over the years, which many have been stolen, victims of car abuse, decay, etc... i'd probably have 1/4 that collection, IF that.

right now i have a paltry stack of cd's and vinyl but 500GB of quality stuff like everyone else.

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Nov 12,2008 3:16pm
No. But I don't download either. I just listen to my favorite bands all of which I got into between 10 and 30 years ago. I am perfectly happy with that.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Nov 12,2008 3:33pm
I do, i swear i do. I just pirate them until i find out i like em, i buy cds that i have downloaded and like every paycheck though.

Me too, with a few exceptions (new Skepticism, Lord Wind, etc.)

Pretty sure my mp3 player just died (computer doesn't recognize it, makes a skipping noise when turned on). Need to pick up something that'll let me connect the 1.8" drive directly to my computer to see if I can just copy the data to my hard drive or if I have to re-rip a shitload of music and lost a bunch of photographs forever.

Vinyl>CDs>mp3s>cassingles

Nope, never.

To make it short, I just dissected the mp3 player and 1.8" drive; didn't suffer a head crash, but the motor's dead. Technologay.

I'm actually trying to get rid of a lot of my CDs. I used to be an addict and would collect everything from every band I'm into, but not anymore. If I absolutely have to have a CD, I will buy it. I'll download everything I can, and buy the stuff that I really like. Everything else either gets deleted or forgotten. I'm much more apt to buy from independent bands though, even if the CD isn't going to be a favorite.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Nov 13,2008 10:30am
i have a clinical addiction to buying cds. i don't like downloading.

CDs are great for discographies or other long releases, but vinyl is the optimal format for split releases and short stuff(7" records). I'm torn.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Nov 13,2008 12:51pm
The quality of sound on a new vinyl is amazing. The exact waveform of the music recorded is printed on the vinyl. On a CD, it's transformed into 0s and 1s and then transformed back. We actually went over that in one of my classes everyday and that reduces the quality a lot. I'm sure most of you knew that already.

So Vinyl > CDs in terms of quality. The opposite of that for convenience.

I used to be like that wicked bad. I had to have single thing by a band I got into. Every single, split, every stupid compilation track etc etc. Even comps where every other band on it sucked. I realized that I wasn't even listening to most of the stuff beyond the initial listen when I first got it.
Long story short, I'm not like that anymore.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Nov 13,2008 12:55pm
there will be a vinyl movement in the near future.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Nov 13,2008 12:59pm
Yeah I look at my collection and realize I could do without half of it. I've already sold about 200 CDs, thrown away 100 and trying to sell another 100 or so. This still leaves me with about 800 CDs though.

toggletoggle post by boblovesmusic   at Nov 13,2008 1:11pm
I'm going through a major CD collecting phase haha! I'd be doing some downloading as well, but I have no space on my hard drive... which should change soon.

On that note: any external hard drive recommendations from you guys? cheap, but good?

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Nov 13,2008 1:13pm
I have been sorting and organizing my CD collection this month, it's so fun!

Look at Western Digital. Mine is 250GB and I got it for 100 or so. Awesome deal.

toggletoggle post by MillenialKingdom  at Nov 13,2008 2:32pm
I have a 750GB external hard drive but I still buy CDs because I like to have hard copies with artwork, lyrics and liner notes.

crazy talk. The way i see it, vinyl has always had a draw from a select group of elitists who believe it's truer to the real sound (cue arguments backing up this point) and that will never change, and there are a lot of them.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Nov 13,2008 3:21pm
or

it's people who download most music. And if they really want to support an artist they'll buy a CD, but why not buy the LP if you have the player. You can display the artwork and shit.

I've been buying stuff lately. It's a lot more satisfying for some reason.

I'll buy a CD from a band at a show...but that's pretty much the only circumstance.

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at Nov 13,2008 3:35pm
Acquiring CD's and vinyl has been one of my favorite hobbies since I was a kid. For me, owning actual copies of my favorite band's recordings is tantamount to collecting pieces of art. Artwork and lyrics (if included) help to greatly enhance the overall experience of an album.

Plus, it doesn't hurt to support the bands you like.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Nov 13,2008 4:02pm
Nope. I'll support the artist by downloading their album from itunes or something but I don't even own a cd player since the last one (probably my 20th) fucking broke. Shits get scratched, lost, and the players always break. I also buy merch and tickets.

I am lazy and refuse to lug around a bunch of CDs when I could pocket an mp3 player and have everything I want.

I realize this makes me un-kvlt, fortunately I don't care.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Nov 13,2008 4:04pm
recently got Earth's latest double EP from Southern Lord

The thing looks like the fucking Bible. It's faux leather bound.

I have one iPod that only works as a hard drive

another that only plays...doesn't accept things being added or removed

and another that just stopped being anything more than a hunk of plastic and metal

I'm not sure I like iPods anymore.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Nov 13,2008 4:16pm
I love my iPod, had it going on 3 years now. I'm shocked I haven't worn it out yet.

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Nov 13,2008 4:39pm
I've had 3 iPods over the past 4 years and have never had any problems whatsoever. Only got new ones to upgrade to larger sizes. I'd be 100% lost without an iPod, since I use it all day at work, when I work out, whenever I'm in the car (which is a fucking lot) and if I end up walking around somewhere for a while. CDs become quite the nuisance in those cases.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Nov 13,2008 4:47pm
My ipod currently has headphone jack issues. But that's the first issue I've had in about 3 years.

toggletoggle post by Nobody_Cares at Nov 13,2008 5:32pm
I have nothing downloaded. Don't have my own PC right now but if I did there still wouldn't be anything downloaded on it. Vinyl and CDs are the only way I know. Fuck it, ill throw some tapes on. All the pirating is killing music.
