since I have a $69 brand new nintendo DS lite coming and chrono trigger is finally coming out, I'm going to finally know why you all think this game is the shit bomb.

YES.
my advice if you're gonna play it on DS, use headphones, you can't miss out on the music.

the music in the trailer is terrible.

toggletoggle post by darkwor at Oct 15,2008 1:16pm
hahah well that's the main theme. i guess you'd better learn to like it.

You're stupid. The music is awesome. The game is awesome. The music is better in Chrono Trigger though.

modded original xbox + http://xbmc.org/ = super-ultra streaming hi-def media center AND emulator of every game for every console made up to and including nintendo 64. i have so many games to play, that i just don't play any of them.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 1:42pm
If I had the money and time, I'd totally start collecting old school games again and stuff.
I can't even tell you how much I miss the Nintendo / Sega war of the early to mid 90s. NOTHING in today's video game market compares to the competition of old.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 16,2008 3:39pm
rev, do you enjoy RPGs?
I've tried getting a few people that had no idea what an RPG was into ChronoTrigger before, and failed.
I actually think CT starts out a little slow - it doesn't really get too interesting until you go into the future IMO. Damn, I fucking love this game.
Haven't played it in a while but I love the dreary atmosphere when you're in the future.
It also gets pretty sweet when you go to Zeal Palace, thousands of years in the past.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 16,2008 3:50pm
I loved FF3, dragon quest I&II, and many others. though i also like zeldas and secret of mana's.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 16,2008 3:58pm
well, if you like SoM, then you'll probably like CT. character design is very similar. the battle system is somewhat similar to that of a FF, but it relies heavily on combos between the characters. also, keep in mind that there are numerous endings to the game, depending on certain choices you make in the game. (12 endings if I remember correctly.)

Everyone always talks about ChronoCross and how great it is and all that crap. I think it was one of the worst sequels EVER and doesn't compare to CT. It's a good game, but weak sequel.

haha, we've discussed this before.

I enjoyed ChronoCross, but I felt very disappointed after beating it.
Things I don't like about ChronoCross:
a)it barely relates to CT's story
b)it's nowhere as dismal as CT
c)way too many characters for the game
d)music wasn't as good as CT
e)wasn't a real big fan of the world and environments
f)battles weren't that entertaining
g)didn't like the dialect of some of the characters
h)story did not engross me at all. was too predictable
i) + other's I can't think of at the moment.

That being said, I wouldn't mind playing it again.. but it just doesn't feel like CT. Indeed, it's a completely different game, but it just was boring compared to the original. I preordered it and got it the day it came out, so I guess you could say I had been anticipating it since beating CT back in '95. (or was it '96? can't even remember)

Xenogears on the other hand... now that's a great game.. regardless of if they ran out of funding and had to rush the last CD of the game.

Chrono trigger might be one of those games you haveto get into in it's golden age.

I know alot of people who played it for their first time more recently and didn't appreciate it, unfortunately.

I don't know man. I love Chrono Trigger and I see what you mean about Chrono Cross being a bad sequel but I think that's because it's not a direct sequel to CT. It's just an alternate timeline created when the dudes from CT saved the world. I really don't think you can justify saying the plot didn't engross you only because I've done the research and the plot and backstory has enough material to fill a 7 book sci-fi series. Ridiculous things about timelines and dimensions and why everything ended up the way it did in the two chrono cross worlds with different connections to what happened in Chrono Trigger. For example, Fate was made from Robo. etc etc

There are a LOT subtle connections to CT and a few LARGE ones. I'm replaying it right now. I say you give it a try too. Then we'll be best friends forever.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 17,2008 11:43am
It does have some relations to CT, but mostly indirect ones. I really wish it was more along the lines of the first one.
You really liked the dimensional stuff? I thought it was kind of cliche.
But yea, I'd be down to play it again. I also want to play Xenogears, Wild Arms, Lufia II, FF9, FF3, and Shining Force again, though.
I guess I could start with the games I didn't enjoy as much:
Chrono Cross and FF9.
Eh, scratch it, I'll try to play CC again and restart Vagrant story.
If, by chance, you have a DS or GBA, play Fire Emblem (both of them)

if you ever had the sneaking suspicion that Robo's theme in Chrono Trigger sounded a lot like Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up, you're definitely not the only one. Earlier this year, Youtube user ImTakiNuSRS created this mashup of the two, and the results were pretty surprising.Pretty close, eh? Well anyway, the dudes over at Original Sound Version were so intrigued by this that they sought out Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda to ask if he'd been inspired by the Rick Astley song. Here's what they found out yesterday:

OSV: Mitsuda-san, please bear with me, as this is hard to explain even in English! There has been an Internet phenomenon in the United States called a "Rick Roll" where people send the following video to one another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

This is a big Internet prank or joke, and some game music fans have noticed how the background melody sounds similar to "Robo's Theme" from Chrono Trigger, calling "Robo's Theme" the first "Rick Roll." It's this big Internet joke. I was hoping you could comment about this, and about Rick Astley's song? Do you think the video is funny?

Mitsuda: It certainly is the first time I've seen this. I'm surprised! That's the first time I've heard of Rick Astley, and it's interesting that such a phenomenon is happening in a different country. Thank you for your time!

So that's that. Apparently not. And he probably thinks we're crazy. Still, great to know you now have lyrics to sing along with Robo's theme when you play through Chrono Trigger again on DS.

Do you mean FFVII? Or are you playing an original disc of FFVIII? I want to replay that game so bad and I want to play FFIX.

Whatever. Regardless of what Aril will say, FFXIII looks pretty as hell. We'll see if the story holds up. Even if it doesn't, it's eye candy.

@ Aril: We should just agree that we like video games and hate each other.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 10,2009 9:40pm
You didn't like X? I LOOOOVED it. I've played it like 4 times through. It was one of the first RPGs that I really fell in love with, FFVII and CT being some of the others.

XII was a let down overall, though. It was too MMO-y and the story wasn't very enthralling. It had it's moments but it was too easy if you didn't get really into it and its sidequests/extra bosses. I had a friend that spent something like 10 or 20 hours on ONE quest for the ultimate weapon that you can easily beat the game without anyway.

XIII looks like it throws a lot of conventions out the window though, so we'll see.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Sep 10,2009 10:15pm

They're probably going to rerelease FFVIII and FFIX on the PSN soon enough. I can't wait so that I can replay. I remember getting onboard Pandora's Box (?) and fighting Biggs and Wedge (pretty sure it was them) and then losing or something and then having to return the game to my friend.

At the last boss, and now I feel like quitting, haha. It's been ridiculously easy up to this point, and now Lavos' inner shell kills my party with his first attack. This is, of course, because I skipped the Black Omen and every side quest. Guess I'll have to do those sometime. But I have to say, while the music is good, this isn't really a favorite of mine. And it only took about 14 hours to get this far. It might make a decent movie, but there's just about zero character development.

I think I might just move on to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor instead. And I need to get The World Ends With You sometime soon-ish.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Sep 22,2009 7:33am edited Sep 22,2009 7:39am
Haha so you skipped all the hard parts. Not liking Chrono Trigger = me being a sad panda. Shit ruled. The DS version had some stupid changes in it and some changes for the better. The monster arena and the extra sidequests in New Game+ are dumb but the dialog felt smoother.

I also need to get SMT and TWEWY.

Also, aril, the rereleased FFT on the PSN is a direct port of the PS1 game, no changes made. Some thing with the rerelease of FFVII a few months back.

Wow, talk about abbreviations.
