New site? Maybe some day.
Yesterday my friend berated me for not having played the new Zeldas (ie. N64, Gamecube/Wii ones) and I rebutted that I can't get used to a 3D Zelda. Am I wrong? Are the new ones REALLY worth playing? |
I like the one on the wii |
I can't stand Wiimotes. AT ALL. |
fuck yeah, the first Zelda 64 is fucking incredible. best one ever imo. |
the only ones you need to concern yourself with is the SNES one and the Minish Cap. the 3d ones are for faggots that wish they knew what zelda was about. |
Well, I really liked DX. That one was awesome. |
my ds was stolen before I could beat minish.
the 3D ones are awesome gamewise and thw iimotes make the games awesome. though the story lines are questionable. |
I can't stand Wiimotes. They're not responsive enough and not very intuitive. |
Martins, my friend, I've been ostrasized by a group of my friends who believe the 3d Zeldas are the best ones. I've always insisted that Zelda was meant for being played in 2d. My favorite Zelda of all time is Zelda: Link's Awakening for GB. I got that game the day it came out, and was immediately hooked because it's the most mysterious / dark Zelda game IMO.
I also love the music in the game and actually covered the theme of the FaceShrine. |
Ocarina of Time is actually amazing. Probably the best one. I've played most of them, minus the Game Boy ones and the new one for Wii, but it's safe to say that Ocarina is easily the best one. The first one for NES and Links Awakening for SNES come in a close 2nd and 3rd. Majoras Mask for the 64 was blah. Not bad, but not great either. |
all zeldas have been great with the exception of 2 and best thing to come out of 3D ones was the hyrule symphony cd |
Adventure of Link is probably my favorite one, then LttP and Twilight Princess |
lttp was the best, best balance of story and action. the ds remake was good too. |

You know, I've always had a good feeling about you. That is easily my favorite one. DX is the color version of that game and it's fucking amazing. I think I'm going to start emulating it very soon. Or buy it. |
I also like Oracle of Seasons and Ages. |
ocarina of time is the best game ever!!!! play it!!!! |
ive been dying to play the new one..but i dont want to buy a wii..what is the difference between the game cube version and the wii??????? |
Ocarina of Time is a great game, I don't believe that Zelda was tarnished by 3D at all. Metroid on the other hand... |
To Whoremastery: Controls and a bit of graphics. |
to martins: thanx!!! i dont care to do the insane wii ninja chops in my room...are the graphics that different???..looks the same on any online pics i see..as song as the story is the same..id rather play it the old fashioned way on game cube..finding it hard to find it on game cube..but consoles are everywhere exp... at the raynham flea market..i need to play the game regardless...
zelda is the best vid game no matter what game or stage in its existance you play it!!
cant wait for the movie in april...trailer looked sick!! |
Link to the Past is by far the best.
Odd for me to say, being the NES guy. |
yeah i don't care much for games that started as 2D and ended up 3D. i hated Mario 64. the only one i care for is Castlevania 64, but its not a spectacular game. compared to the brilliance of Symphony of the Night its a pile of shit. i haven't played Ocarina of Time but its been recommended several times. |
What didn't you like about it? Maybe it was because I was still an impressionable kid when the N64 came out (9 years old to be exact) but I thought it was a great game...not a Mario game in the traditional sense but still groundbreaking. |
The 3d ones for N64 were instant classics; you're really missing out on some great additions to the Zelda canon and the Zelda gameplay if you don't check them out. Sorry, 2d posers - expand your horizons and stop trying to be retro. LOOLZ |

From what I've seen, the graphics are only marginally different. |

i can only remember disliking it from when it came out. i can't say i would still hate it now, but i haven't played it in ages. |
It's a lot less frustrating to control than Super Mario Sunshine... |
I have played all the console Zeldas and think they are all essential if you like Zelda at all.
Also, the only 3D mario I've played is Mario64 and Mario Galaxy. I think both are amazing games. |
I'm sorry - I'm not going to stop believing that Zelda is meant for 2d. It's primarily an adventure-based overhead dungeon crawler game.
I'm not a huge fan of 3d remakes of any games whatsever. It takes the imagination out of the games. I'm sure they are good games, but I feel uneasy playing them because it goes against my belief system.
I've had this discussion with Martins (?) too, I think, about the Final Fantasy games. To me, I think the series stopped with FF6(3). FF7 was a great game, but I think it lacked some serious elements. The graphics and cartoon looking characters completely ruined it for me.
I also can't stand the new ones; all the characters look like girls and/or not as rugged as the characters of old.
Stick me in a room with every system up to PS1 and call it a day.
Modern video games suck. Only modern FPS's are real. |
BTW DYA, I believe I need my Links Awakening cartridge back. Your above statement has struck a nerve. |

Yeah we've had our e-discussions on this. You can call me by my real name now haha (Brian). I can now see why you think the later FFs aren't amazing but I still think that the plots make it worthwhile. I play RPG's because it's an alternative to reading with all the perks of really fun things to do while you're doing it. The graphics come second but they've never disappointed.
I also hate FPSs. (Because I suck at them.)
for those who never played o.o.t. for 64...play it...you will love it!!! best game ever! |
I agree with everyone who said "A link to the past". That one was a masterpiece. Hours, and hours of time spent on that one. I really liked one and two as well on NES although two proves to be hard in an entirely different skillset. I still really liked link though. |

Effective 14 October, 2008, and in consideration of other people's opinions, it is hereby declared that any Zelda 16bit or below are the best ones.
All Zeldas 64bit or above are considered FALSE and unworthy of being a Zelda title.

while i totally agree, some of my buds that are real gamers like the 64 one quite a bit. |
zelda: ocarina of time (64) is the #1 ranked game of all time on gamerankings and i guess that says something.
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/197771.asp
if any video game fan hasn't played zelda64, wtf are you doing. it's on my top 5 list along with super metroid, chrono trigger, half-life 2 and metal gear solid 2.
the NES zelda games were great but i can't get into playing them today. the SNES zelda is a total masterpiece though. i still consider the ocarina of time the best one. |
oops. thread is closed people |
i've played Z64 and didn't like it one bit.
ever since I read they were making a Z64 that was essentially first person, I puked. regardless of the story, regardless of the music, regardless of anything that is 'good' about the game, I won't like it.
To me, Vagrant story is what Z64 SHOULD have looked like/been. It has a much more dark/sinister feel and is a complete dungeon-based game.
Once Zelda went cartoony on me, it lost its mysterious feel.
To sum up any Zelda post 16bit (and any true fan should get this): "I AM ERROR" |

hahaha...i'm aware it's not a popular opinion. let me blast a list of your fav games |
I've got it. If you have a PS1, I MAY let you borrow it. Since you're into some nice black metal, too. DYA currently has my Link's Awakening Cartridge but I'm itching to play that. I'm hoping he didn't lose it. |
And by the way, someone else please tell me they've played Vagrant Story.
It's definitely one of the most underrated/underplayed PS1 games because it came out during the very end of it. It's such a dark game and has some awesome boss fights. |
i have a modded ps2 and all i need is a proper burned copy of it. if i looked realllllll hard i could find a cdimage on the internet, but so far i haven't been able to. it's rare enough that ebay has it for 30-50 bucks. |
well, you're friends with jim.. I'm sure we'll cross paths someday at a brewfest and i'll have vagrant story in my hand |
very true. sounds good.
...zelda hater |

zelda lover.
only true zeldas though. no cartoon crap. EXCUUUUUUSEEE MEEE, princess. |
OH
and I forgot to mention.
If you guys like a Link to the Past and all the old-school Zelda games,
please check out Crusader of Centy for Sega Genesis.
It's Sega's Zelda game. Although a bit corny and kidsy at times, it's definitely right up there with Zelda IMO. |

Uniracers! i forgot about that game! that was a blast.
I was addicted (literally) to WOW for a little while, so i'm biased against it.
You can't go wrong with most Megaman or Castlevania games. Megaman X i probably played the most. |

I ordered it online a few months ago. I'm like a quarter done or so. |

dont play WoW now then... the game is improving like crazy. |
I could not get into Vagrant Story at all, I think I put in 8-10 hours before I got tired of the setting and battle system. OOT was fun once you got past the overly long tutorial portion, but yeah it wasn't on par with LttP. There was a playstation game similar to Zelda, Alundra I think? Find a torrent of that if you're looking for a 2d Zelda experience. |
vagrant story's settings change quite a lot, especially later in the game. when you're not fighting medieval humans, you're fighting Lich's, demons, djinn, orcs, lizardmen, minotaurs, dragons, etc. it get's very epic at parts.
the battle system on the other hand; believe it or not, is very complex.
you have the ability to create your own weapons, and you have to create them with certain attributes which are strong or weak against certain enemies. |
The Adventure of Link is the hardest game to ever play via emulator. Fucked. |
i just played through link to the past again not too long ago in two sittings and it was mind blowing. seriously better than the ugly cockarina of time. |
never played any of the other new ones but ocarina of time is probably my favorite game of all time |
i'm playing the "twilight princess" now, it's incredible. It's the first Zelda that actually looks like an RPG to me. |
I'm pretty partial to the original Legend of Zelda myself |
me too, i really like LINK for the NES as well.. great music. |

precisely. this law states so |
I was ready to chime in and say Link to the Past is best...then I saw that I already had...nearly 2 years ago. |
I've played all the Zelda games except for one and I must say I've loved all of them. |
Links Awakening > All Others |
8 bit nintendo zelda is for fags. Only dressing up in my moms green dress while hitting neighborhood kids with a sharp stick is TRUE zelda. |
The best Zelda is the one where Link and Hulk Hogan fight over who can knock down the World Trade Center the fastest. |

HAHAHAHAHA |

Perhaps this is a sign of my age and maybe I wouldn't feel the same way if I were ten years younger - but I don't think so - I just think 3D games began an embrace of good graphics and sound over good storylines and gameplay, kind of like spending a million dollars in the studio for a great production of shitty songs.
Zelda and Mario are glaring examples of this because they developed as far superior games on earlier systems with less emphasis on the newest graphics and sound technology, and so the flip in priorities is especially noticable.
I feel the same way about the Final Fantasy series, FFII and FFIII for SNES were two of the best videogames ever made, if not the best, and I remember playing a 3D FF years later for a couple minutes and wondering exactly what the hell it was they thought it had to do with the actual Final Fantasy series and the gameplay it was so well known for.
As a matter of fact, aside for sports and fighting games, the obsessive usage of 3-D has been a giant mistake, as ridiculous as if the film industry decided that ALL movies starting in the 90's would all now be made for 3-D, including great films and drama. |
Shadow SD- finally, someone who agrees! |

You know something? That map is very similar to Link's Awakening map. The raft ride, location of the castle, location of the woods.
I just had an epiphany- could it be possible that Link ate one of Tarin's magic toadstool/mushrooms and had an hallucination in the same reality as the world of light for ALttP? As noted in Link's awakening, Tarin is Mario in disguise. One can notice the physical similarities of them, in addition to the fact that he dressed up in a tanooki suit. He also placed the Yoshi doll in the Trendy Game. I sincerely belive Link was tripping balls now. it's Marios plot to overthrow Link and Kidnap Zelda so he can have a threesome with princess peach. Shit is all falling into place.
A+ |
Nintendo's game designers regularly explore massive gardens while tripping balls...the influence is apparent in every one of their games. |
yeah, i luv a link to the past jon. It's my fav of all of them. The only one that compares is the original Zelda, or twilight princess. I enjoy the winkwaker too, but it's a little too cartoony for me. not DARK enough. (which i know, sounds a LITTLE silly when talking about zelda.) The original link was a lot of fun too, although it was totally different than all of the other games. Which, i kinda like. It's nice when game designers take chances... (well, sometimes.) |
Yep. Aren't mushrooms somewhat legal in Japan? Or is that a false fact I need to rid from my brain? |
There definitely was a wink and a nudge when it came to Mario and constantly eating mushrooms.
(Never mind Mario 2, which entirely constituted of tripping balls, and quickly revised itself only at the end - he was just DREAMING, wink, wink) |
Mario 2 is NOT a Mario game. I love it, but the game was called Doki Doki Panic. Hence all the differences. |
Mario 2 is by far, (if I recall) the hardest game of the series. Honestly, my favorite also. |

If Mario 2 isn't Mario despite containing 90% of the elements of Mario 1 and Mario 3 games, then the 3-D stuff certainly doesn't count as Mario, and arguably neither would the original Mario Bros. (arcade) or certainly the original Donkey Kong from which Mario was spawned.
And forget about Golf and Mike Tyson's Punch Out |
You know something? That map is very similar to Link's Awakening map. |
That map's the Link's Awakening DX map. |
You gotta be shittin me. I briefly glanced at it on my phone and assumed it was ALttP because of the color.
You're right, there's the windfish's egg. I was wondering why I didn't remember the map that way for APttP.
DX? Fuck that. OMG AN EXTRA DUNGEON.
Oracle of Seasons / Ages also don't hold a candle to LA and ALttP. |
DX is awesome because it's in color LOL @ U |
oh yea? At least my gameboy was grass fed. |
Mine still works like a charm. There's some dust settling in between the screen layers but I can fix that.
IT'D BE NICE TO PLAY LINKS AWAKENING AGAIN. |
Hahaha, dude, come out to Worcester and check out the compound. Weed sigils and BBQ. |
I was there last night. :'( |
im playing Link on my cellphone. |
not that anyone really cares but i uploaded that old remix I did of the Face Shrine song from gameboy's zelda.
http://www.myspace.com/8bitofdeath
ugh, this song needs to be redone! |
