Yesterday my friend berated me for not having played the new Zeldas (ie. N64, Gamecube/Wii ones) and I rebutted that I can't get used to a 3D Zelda. Am I wrong? Are the new ones REALLY worth playing?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 12,2008 3:21pm
I like the one on the wii

I can't stand Wiimotes. AT ALL.

toggletoggle post by TheGreatSpaldino   at Oct 12,2008 3:35pm
the only ones you need to concern yourself with is the SNES one and the Minish Cap. the 3d ones are for faggots that wish they knew what zelda was about.

Well, I really liked DX. That one was awesome.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 12,2008 3:47pm
my ds was stolen before I could beat minish.
the 3D ones are awesome gamewise and thw iimotes make the games awesome. though the story lines are questionable.

I can't stand Wiimotes. They're not responsive enough and not very intuitive.

Martins, my friend, I've been ostrasized by a group of my friends who believe the 3d Zeldas are the best ones. I've always insisted that Zelda was meant for being played in 2d. My favorite Zelda of all time is Zelda: Link's Awakening for GB. I got that game the day it came out, and was immediately hooked because it's the most mysterious / dark Zelda game IMO.
I also love the music in the game and actually covered the theme of the FaceShrine.

toggletoggle post by Pires at Oct 12,2008 5:36pm
Ocarina of Time is actually amazing. Probably the best one. I've played most of them, minus the Game Boy ones and the new one for Wii, but it's safe to say that Ocarina is easily the best one. The first one for NES and Links Awakening for SNES come in a close 2nd and 3rd. Majoras Mask for the 64 was blah. Not bad, but not great either.

toggletoggle post by boine nli at Oct 12,2008 6:17pm
all zeldas have been great with the exception of 2 and best thing to come out of 3D ones was the hyrule symphony cd

toggletoggle post by BobNOMAAMRooney nli at Oct 12,2008 9:13pm
Adventure of Link is probably my favorite one, then LttP and Twilight Princess

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 12,2008 9:16pm
lttp was the best, best balance of story and action. the ds remake was good too.

You know, I've always had a good feeling about you. That is easily my favorite one. DX is the color version of that game and it's fucking amazing. I think I'm going to start emulating it very soon. Or buy it.

What didn't you like about it? Maybe it was because I was still an impressionable kid when the N64 came out (9 years old to be exact) but I thought it was a great game...not a Mario game in the traditional sense but still groundbreaking.

The 3d ones for N64 were instant classics; you're really missing out on some great additions to the Zelda canon and the Zelda gameplay if you don't check them out. Sorry, 2d posers - expand your horizons and stop trying to be retro. LOOLZ

I'm sorry - I'm not going to stop believing that Zelda is meant for 2d. It's primarily an adventure-based overhead dungeon crawler game.
I'm not a huge fan of 3d remakes of any games whatsever. It takes the imagination out of the games. I'm sure they are good games, but I feel uneasy playing them because it goes against my belief system.
I've had this discussion with Martins (?) too, I think, about the Final Fantasy games. To me, I think the series stopped with FF6(3). FF7 was a great game, but I think it lacked some serious elements. The graphics and cartoon looking characters completely ruined it for me.
I also can't stand the new ones; all the characters look like girls and/or not as rugged as the characters of old.
Stick me in a room with every system up to PS1 and call it a day.
Modern video games suck. Only modern FPS's are real.

Yeah we've had our e-discussions on this. You can call me by my real name now haha (Brian). I can now see why you think the later FFs aren't amazing but I still think that the plots make it worthwhile. I play RPG's because it's an alternative to reading with all the perks of really fun things to do while you're doing it. The graphics come second but they've never disappointed.

I also hate FPSs. (Because I suck at them.)

ever since I read they were making a Z64 that was essentially first person, I puked. regardless of the story, regardless of the music, regardless of anything that is 'good' about the game, I won't like it.

To me, Vagrant story is what Z64 SHOULD have looked like/been. It has a much more dark/sinister feel and is a complete dungeon-based game.
Once Zelda went cartoony on me, it lost its mysterious feel.

To sum up any Zelda post 16bit (and any true fan should get this): "I AM ERROR"

I could not get into Vagrant Story at all, I think I put in 8-10 hours before I got tired of the setting and battle system. OOT was fun once you got past the overly long tutorial portion, but yeah it wasn't on par with LttP. There was a playstation game similar to Zelda, Alundra I think? Find a torrent of that if you're looking for a 2d Zelda experience.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 9:23am
vagrant story's settings change quite a lot, especially later in the game. when you're not fighting medieval humans, you're fighting Lich's, demons, djinn, orcs, lizardmen, minotaurs, dragons, etc. it get's very epic at parts.
the battle system on the other hand; believe it or not, is very complex.
you have the ability to create your own weapons, and you have to create them with certain attributes which are strong or weak against certain enemies.

Perhaps this is a sign of my age and maybe I wouldn't feel the same way if I were ten years younger - but I don't think so - I just think 3D games began an embrace of good graphics and sound over good storylines and gameplay, kind of like spending a million dollars in the studio for a great production of shitty songs.

Zelda and Mario are glaring examples of this because they developed as far superior games on earlier systems with less emphasis on the newest graphics and sound technology, and so the flip in priorities is especially noticable.

I feel the same way about the Final Fantasy series, FFII and FFIII for SNES were two of the best videogames ever made, if not the best, and I remember playing a 3D FF years later for a couple minutes and wondering exactly what the hell it was they thought it had to do with the actual Final Fantasy series and the gameplay it was so well known for.

As a matter of fact, aside for sports and fighting games, the obsessive usage of 3-D has been a giant mistake, as ridiculous as if the film industry decided that ALL movies starting in the 90's would all now be made for 3-D, including great films and drama.

You know something? That map is very similar to Link's Awakening map. The raft ride, location of the castle, location of the woods.
I just had an epiphany- could it be possible that Link ate one of Tarin's magic toadstool/mushrooms and had an hallucination in the same reality as the world of light for ALttP? As noted in Link's awakening, Tarin is Mario in disguise. One can notice the physical similarities of them, in addition to the fact that he dressed up in a tanooki suit. He also placed the Yoshi doll in the Trendy Game. I sincerely belive Link was tripping balls now. it's Marios plot to overthrow Link and Kidnap Zelda so he can have a threesome with princess peach. Shit is all falling into place.
A+

Nintendo's game designers regularly explore massive gardens while tripping balls...the influence is apparent in every one of their games.

yeah, i luv a link to the past jon. It's my fav of all of them. The only one that compares is the original Zelda, or twilight princess. I enjoy the winkwaker too, but it's a little too cartoony for me. not DARK enough. (which i know, sounds a LITTLE silly when talking about zelda.) The original link was a lot of fun too, although it was totally different than all of the other games. Which, i kinda like. It's nice when game designers take chances... (well, sometimes.)

If Mario 2 isn't Mario despite containing 90% of the elements of Mario 1 and Mario 3 games, then the 3-D stuff certainly doesn't count as Mario, and arguably neither would the original Mario Bros. (arcade) or certainly the original Donkey Kong from which Mario was spawned.

And forget about Golf and Mike Tyson's Punch Out
