I also bought my first comic yesterday.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jul 30,2008 4:20pm
is this the result of Batman?

toggletoggle post by BSV at Jul 30,2008 4:37pm
more or less working at newbury comics and knowing nothing at all about this stuff.
I like reading these cause I can listen to metal with ease without getting lost, unlike reading most of my non-fiction books.
But yes, I will read Watch Men in a few weeks, as a result of Batman.

definitely read The Walking Dead and Wasteland.

the first comic i bought was very recent too.

i was in harrisons in salem and saw some lovecraft stuff...on that day I bought the sadhu, about an english soldier in victorian india who has his family killed, he becomes a sadhu and seeks revenge.

I've also started to collect the dark tower and hellboy series, awesome stuff.

Actually I think I may have read swamp thing when I was little. I had an action figure and thought it was badass so I'm pretty sure I bought the comic when I learned that it existed.

Fall of Cthulhu is fairly decent, for a lovecraft buff anyways. the first few issues were awesome, then it started to get meh. i still pick it up, so i guess that says something. marvel's got a mini series going on currently, too.

the only comic i ever bought was The Death of Superman. the only ones i've ever read are like 2 Spawn issues, The Death of Superman, and the first few Battle Popes.

Josh! X-Men. all of em. do it.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Jul 31,2008 8:54am
First comic I ever bought was the opener of "The X-Ecutioner's Song" X-Men storyline way back when. I've since grown out of that stuff, but that had me hooked for years.

First comic I ever owned was an issue of X-Men Classics (reprints of 70s stories) with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Alpha Flight vs. the Wendigo. First one I ever bought was Fantastic Four #326 (back when Ben Grimm wasn't the Thing for five minutes) vs. the Frightful Four(Titania, Wizard, Hydro-Man, and Klaw) and Dragon Man.

For recent titles, you cannot go wrong with Dark Horse's Conan series - they're directly from the Robert E. Howard stories, with some new stuff added in between to link them together. AWESOME.

I honestly can't remember the comics I got in the 80s. I'm going to have to check them out; they're still sitting around somewhere.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jul 31,2008 9:37am
I remember having a Nightcrawler one from the early 90s that had his eyes as cardboard cutouts and you could make a mask.

Fucking unloaded on a bunch of Thor's today. I'm trying to track down DEAD WORLD too. Really want to do the Dark Tower next.
What's a good X-Men to start with? I get confused with all these series and shit.

cant go wrong with uncanny.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Aug 1,2008 10:48pm
my first was a star wars one. that was back in 1980.
after that a GIJOe and a Transformers one... and then an xman one. either this one
http://apps.facebook.com/comicbooks/editions/uncanny-x-men-1981-178
or this one
http://apps.facebook.com/comicbooks/editions/uncanny-x-men-1981-187
but then I got into xmen in a major way in issue 233 or 237.

get the first dark tower in trade. second series was meh, but you can get them at cover price. third series starts in a few months.
as for x-men, get the most recent Astonishing X-Men. warren ellis just took it over, and it's gonna be phenomenal. and read the Walking Dead dammit.

astonishing x-men starting at #25

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Aug 2,2008 2:06am

how can you not read this?

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Aug 2,2008 2:11am

Preacher

It's a series of 9 graphic novels about a man who inherits the power of god's voice. Throw in a hillbilly that cuts open live fish and fucks them, a deformed suicide survivor (kurt cobain wannabe) named arseface, a gun toting girlfriend, and a really fucked up and abusive family. I can't even begin to describe this shit.

I would highly recommend this to anyone!

I forgot the drunk/addict irish vampire.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Aug 2,2008 2:16am
Also, the final genetic descendant of Christ, an inbred retard that spends his time turning gasoline into wine and getting wasted.

SRSLY, Uncanny X-Men is the original book - just get the absolute oldest / earliest trade paperback you can find, and go from there. Late 70s to early 80s is my favorite shit, personally. Before there were 10 books to follow and everybody had already died and "got better" twice.

I have 5 500 comic boxes full of that stuff.
