toggletoggle post by xmikex at Jul 29,2008 3:47pm
I hear that. I'm trying to save for a million different things, but guess what... we're playing Baltimore this weekend.

Bye bye income.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Jul 29,2008 3:59pm
i have a 3 day fest coming up in 2 weeks that i booked with tour starting that weekend, along with both my bands putting out cds within a month of each other. and i might be joining a 3rd band. beat that, hah.

toggletoggle post by aril at Jul 29,2008 4:04pm
having children and being in a band puts more holes in your pockets.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Jul 29,2008 4:05pm
I have holes in my pockets for other reasons.

toggletoggle post by Brownonomer  at Jul 29,2008 4:05pm
Just bought a van, a trailer, 2 bands, can't stop buying equipment, just put out a full lenght ourselves. and going on tour.

Not quite as bad... but its pretty bad. Working 2 jobs right now to be able to do it.

i can remember at one point in dysentery, both eric and i were unemployed and i was overdrawing my account on a reg basis to go to shows and practice. sucks and sucked...but its essential not get martyred out. this is DM. this is DM. this is DM. we dont do this for the money, we do this because we have no choice. we loose 7 year relationships, we burn bridges, fuck ourselves over and so on...because we have dreams that go waaaaaaaay back to even having hair on ya dong kehd.

It's awesome when you're all done recording and mixing...the guy who owns the studio gives you the grand total, and one of your bandmates decides at that exact moment to tell you that they don't have any money.

With all the money I lose being in my band I can only imagine how much money I'd lose if I was in a band that tries hard.

That's why it always cracks me up twice as hard when that fat guy I work with grills me about my band "making it"

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 30,2008 12:35pm
reach for the stars doods

toggletoggle post by metal_church101  at Jul 30,2008 12:36pm

yeah when i was in a band i had no money, and was unemployed for a duration of the time, and now that i have money, i have no band.

toggletoggle post by MycroftBoy at Jul 30,2008 12:51pm
being a pro musician is tough, even bands like killswitch, they probably do not see a penny from the record label. all their income is touring and merch and even that, you'd probably make more a year working at Wally World + benes... it aint easy but it sure must be fun at times...and with rising gas prices? touring probably costs more than ever!

toggletoggle post by aril at Jul 30,2008 12:52pm
well, what do you play, yeti?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 30,2008 1:01pm

Thank fucking christ TYAG broke up. If we were still on track with all the shit we had to do when there was a record contract involved, I probably would have killed myself by now. Being in a band is fucking awesome, when it's the right band, but it sucks when you make huge sacrifices to take up opportunities when they're presented to you. Just from a 3 week tour in April, I am still about $2400 in the hole after interest rates, overdraw fees, late fees and other debts accrued because of the tour. I've even sold half my musical equipment and about 200 CDs to try making up for it, but that barely scratched the surface. If I didn't love playing music so much I'd probably own a sweet house and a beamer, rather than barely scrounging enough change to pay for studio rent and gas.

to me, being in a band is a hobby (cue leigh rush HOBBY ROCKERZ comment), and hobbies cost money. some people play golf as their hobby. golf clubs cost money, playing at golf courses costs money. if you want to have fun, you have to pay for it. my band members and i have spent considerable amounts of money on recording, pressing cds, practice spaces, renting uhauls for gear, etc, but i'd rather have spent the money on that stuff than sat around my house doing nothing.

toggletoggle post by grizloch   at Jul 31,2008 11:58am
Im still about 1500 in the hole after tour, I cant pay my rent, which is the biggest chunk of it, 2 months at 550 each, next month is due tomorrow and I just dont have it... lame... my credit card is 250 over limit, when I went on tour I had about 800 available credit on it...

I quit music
